LA Noire. Well I am hoping that it turns out to be another GTA IV not another RDR (such a fucking dissapointment). In reality I would guess it will fall somewhere in the middle.

My general assumption about sequels is good for the shareholders, bad for the consumers.
In what backwards world was RDR a disappointment?
Yeah I'm interested in this as well. RDR was my personal GOTY last year and a lot of publications agreed... by far the best western video game ever produced.

OT: Skyrim will probably take it, but really who could know this early in the year? Let's not discount Batman: Arkham City either.
Speaking personally I loved almost every aspect of GTA IV and it is my favourite game so I approached RDR with high hopes. I found the characters trite predictable and emotionally unengaging. The backdrop of the West didn't captivate me the way Liberty City did. I found the mission varied from repetitive to damn right tedious (oh joy half way through the game I get to do the same training missions again shooting at birds, capturing horses, moving cattle etc). My love for Liberty City means I can happily drive around for hours just absorbing the atmosphere and enjoying the smallest of details, I found RDR just sparse and boring in this respect. Finally the writing in GTA IV in my opinion was awe inspiring in places, perfectly complimenting the post 9/11 aura that surrounded the game. The Western as a cinematic and literary genre often (but not always) has a feel of black/white politics and ethics this placed in RDR just felt pedestrian and uninspired.

While I am happy for anyone who enjoyed it I just didn't.

How are we supposed to judge games that haven't been released yet?

Anyway, so far I would say Portal 2.

If it gets released this year, Guild Wars 2.

If not, Minecraft. Maybe Portal 2 or Skyrim if the judges don't like creative games.

It's meant to be a prediction thing.

Oh, and original games coming this year:

A metric ton of XBLA/PSN games (I'm really looking forward to Journey, Daggerdale and Wizardy: Labyrinth of Lost Souls)

A metric ton of handheld games

Catherine

Dark Souls

Anarchy Reigns

The Last Guardian Sorry, 2012 release.

Brink

Rage

L.A. Noir

Dead Island

Child of Eden (sort of)

Deus Ex: Hello Robert (sort of)

FF Type-0 (sort of)

The Old Republic (sort of)

And a bunch that I've missed (hey, add your own) or pushed into the handheld/downloadable category. The AAA industry is enamored with sequels, but it doesn't look too bad.

There are far too many promosing games yet to be released to make a reasonable guess. If Dragon Age 2 wins any GOTY awards, then there is something seriously wrong. It's not a bad game, but it's far from GOTY material. Portal 2 probably has the best chance out of the games that have already been released. However, any of the following should also have a good chance (in no particular order),

- L.A. Noire (I think most people know why this is a contender)
- Skyrim (again, everyone knows why)
- The Witcher 2 (I dare anyone who thinks DA2 has a chance to say this doesn't)
- Deus Ex 3 (if they deliver on making a game to live up to the original)
- Batman Arkham City (I feel they are adding enough since the first one to stand a chance)

I'm sure there are more possible contenders (Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 3 spring to mind), but I've not been following them so I've no idea if they are looking good or bad.

For games out now, I'd say either Portal 2 or Minecraft.

For games not out YET, It'll be a toss-up between Skyrim and Duke Nukem Forever

Ok I know it's very early to be asking this but I was curious to what you guys/girls think... What game do you think will take the prize home for this year? Personally I'm thinking either Portal 2 or if it's released in time Minecraft. Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 3 could potentially change my mind though.

Also making the poll I realized how many sequels are in the list... Is this good or bad for the industry?

EDIT: Sorry I forgot about Skyrim :S
For me, it's easily ME3. But you left out Batman Arkum City. IF i though TOR was launching this year, i'd have prolly been that, but bioware seems to have shifted all it focus to ME3, not that that's a bad thing... and thus i tend to see TOR launching after ME3, which is a year end title, so, it's not a 2011 game.

Which bums me out. But maybe i'm wrong... i hope i'm wrong.. but i don't think i am...

BioWare Austin is making TOR. BioWare Edmonton is making ME3. They're completely different companies.

...so what you're saying is, because RDR did exactly what GTAIV you don't like it?

probably portal 2. I'm an uncharted fan, and think its one of the best full on AAA blockbuster series - portal is almost indie compared to it... - but I think portal 2 will be better.

hopefully though, Battle field 3 will be GOTY! I just hope its that awesome! leave COD to the 12 year olds, make a REAL PC shooter again, dice! :D

I would like to see either Deus ex HR or Witcher 2 win this year's GOTY, but sadly, everyone will be too busy jerking off on Skyrim to even bother seeing other games :-(

what about Diablo III? it should come out in November or something.

If it doesn't come out, i would say portal 2 has a high chance of being the game of the year,
but i hope that cod:MW3 will be as fun as cod:MW1, but it probably will not as the cod games have been going down hill since MW1 :/
