I think riots and mass hysteria will occur. The world will not end but it will become more dangerous, simply due to insane lunatics.

Because of this I think it would be wise for everyone to arm themselves before 2012, in order to protect ourselves and our property.

Mayans never said anything about the world ending, 2012 is the end of an era and the start of a new one. It works kind of like months/days/years only on a larger time scale...

I remember when everyone was freaking out on June 6 of '06.

You know what happened that day? Deicide came out with a new CD.

Just because the Mayans were too stupid to count past 2012 doesn't mean we're doomed.

It wasn't that they couldn't count past 2012 (and in fact, if there's one thing the Mayans COULD do, it was count), it was that their mythology, and their calendar was based on a cyclical scope of time. They had all the math and astronomy they needed, but didn't have the paleontology to understand that the world wasn't destroyed and recreated brand new ever 2 or 3 millenium.

So their grand calendar (which IS very accurate, as far as calendars go) countsdown to what we call 2012, and then it resets to what it calls 0, because it's basically just a big wheel. The Mayans just accepted that that's how the universe works - worlds are just destroyed and remade every couple thousand years. We know better now. But people still choose to either believe, either from some misinformed "better safe then sorry" outlook, or worse, an attempt to bilk people out of money or sell books which will look ridiculous in 3 years time.

The interesting thing is that this is a calendar of a long dead culture. One could assume that filling in a few hundred years would suit them quite well and that they were planning to continue. (Although based on Altorin's information, this makes a lot more sense. We still can't ask a dead culture what they meant exactly, though)

On the other hand, I have been told that it is not only the Mayan Calendar that ends on this date, but that it also has been predicted in other religions (don't ask me which, I can't remember what my professor said).

My own personal theory? Well, we had the GFC. Maybe that was supposed to be it. Maybe we just got to our life-altering moment a little too soon. Other than that, I'd expect a massive-scale natural disaster and accept nothing less.
