Given all my friends do 3ds for pokemon mostly, I would have to say, 3ds.

That said, I am extremely interested in the Nvidia Shield for mobile gaming, especially since they allow you to stream games from your computer at home, while you're out and about. So long as you have good wifi connection you can stream directly from your home PC.

But for the purpose of this, definately the 3ds.

I think both handhelds have some great strengths and weaknesses. I would say get both eventually if you can afford it, as that's what I plan to do (currently own a Vita and really wishing I could play Pokémon, Dream Drop Distance, Theatrhythm, Persona Q when it comes out, ect.), but of course that's not going to be a viable option for most people. So it really depends on what you want from a handheld.

First of all, you mentioned not having a PS3/PS4, but do you own a PS2? A PSP? Because the primary games I find myself playing on my Vita are PS1 classics, PS2 ports like Persona 4 Golden/Final Fantasy X|X-2 and downloadable PSP titles. This is all great and I enjoy taking advantage of this, but by far the biggest thing for me is getting to play these games I missed out on, having never owned a PSP or purchased many PS1/PS2 games when I was younger. I can't imagine it'd be all that worth it for those of you who have had Sony consoles for awhile and don't need another platform to experience them again. The portability of these titles is, of course, a nice thing too.

As far as exclusive games go, the 3DS trumps the Vita any day, hands down. I don't think I've seen anyone argue otherwise and for some people that's the most important factor. Honestly the Vita's biggest downfall is the lack of releases available on it that you can't get anywhere else. However, I have to say I really don't like the design of the original DS; I have a Lite and it's really uncomfortable to hold for even a short amount of time, let alone the hours of gaming that I'd want to put into it. I haven't had much of an opportunity to check it out yet, but I can't imagine the 3DS being that much different. Another negative about the 3DS is that the Nintendo eShop, so I hear, is not as good as the PlayStation Store in terms of what they offer for backwards-compatible games, though even then I don't think it's too big of a deal since the 3DS can play the DS cartridges. The Vita cannot do the same with PSP carts; it's limited to what's available to download on the Store, unfortunately. And it really pisses me off that Crisis Core isn't on there!

I rank the Vita higher as an all-around great device, but if it's just the variety and exclusivity of games you're concerned about, the 3DS is more for you, I'd imagine.
I have owned a ps1 and ps2 but both of them dosent work anymore so it would be really nice to play some ps1 and ps2 games.
When i looked in to some games for psvita it looked really nice and i wanted some of them BUT the biggest problem is one of my best friends who told me that psvita sucks and dosent have any good games on it and i shouldnt buy it becuase it would be wasted money. So he made me even more confused.
I should maybe tell you that owned a ds lite but i dont have it anymore so maybe i should try something new?

The 3DS has more solid titles because of strong first party support.

The Vita has a better backlog because of its access to classics on PSN.

The Vita is the better system, but Sony's incompetence in service to its customers and hardware issues -especially memory- is making it flounder giving the 3DS the head as Nintendo knows how to handle a handheld system. Fortunately for Sony, however, Nintendo doesn't know how to handle online services as well as Sony. However, Sony has yet to fully utilize that advantage to its fullest. Also, the gap seems to be closing as Nintendo is starting to understand how to appeal to its customers more. It's Online Store is still ponderous, but they've put out some nice online titles such as Code of Princess and Liberation Maiden.

It sounds like you're into JRPGs, which does indeed make this a hard call.

Vita has recently started getting a ton of JRPGs, like Dangan Ronpa, Conception II (though this one is also on 3ds) and Deception IV, so my vita collection has exploded recently.

On the other hand, the 3ds has the masterful Shin Megami Tensei IV, and a larger library all around.

I play the hell out of both consoles, and while currently I play the Vita considerably more, that's changed many times over the past few years. Flip a coin, OP XD

Hmmm, it sounds like you were leaning pretty heavily towards the Vita until your friend shared his opinion. I would say to disregard him in the matter. The system has its faults, but it certainly doesn't "suck."

Unfortunately it doesn't look that way. I was hoping myself that the 1.5 and 2.5 collections would be made available with Vita versions as well, but so far Square Enix hasn't uttered a word on it and it's safer to assume that won't be happening. A pretty big shame too if you ask me, considering Birth By Sleep is getting a port along with the HD treatment for the PS3 but doesn't seem like it'll come to the PS Store.

I would go with 3DS personally, namely for the great combination of first and third party support. With both Link between Worlds, and Ocarina of Time 3D, if you like Zelda, you are well covered with the system. Pokemon X and Y is a blast, Mario Kart 7 is one of the best Mario Karts in my opinion. Mario 3D Land is lots of fun if you like 3D Mario games. I've heard nothing but positive things about Fire Emblem Awakening and Animal Crossing New Leaf if that interests you.

I wish the Vita could interest me more, but I haven't seen that one game that makes the system a must buy. Though to be fair, I didn't get much use out of my PSP, which I know many people loved. So you really liked what the PSP offered, you will probably like the Vita too.

Depends really, but nevertheless, you can't go wrong with any of them.

I own both, have a blast with both. Moreso with my vita tho just because, like someone said above, there's a lot of oddball, new licenses, and stuff I didn' get to play before that plays quite well on the Viturr. Also, it's got a shitload of announcement recently for 2014, which will make it a very interesting platform. Plus, PSN allows you to buy most psp titles digitally and some ps1 games. And if you have a ps4, well you get to have remote play.
And if you like Indies, well it's getting a ton of that too

It's major downsides are the price of memory cards which are still outrageous (although the console itself got to a reasonable price), some pricing on the psn is a bit high too but they often do interesting sales, and PS+ offers nice advantages.
And well, while it's getting great support from japan and decent support from europe with wipeout, killzone M, and tearaway, america seems to be completely ignoring this thing which is a damn shame. So if you're not too much into either niche (but good) titles and japanese games, you might find it tough. Although I wasn't too at first but by curiostiy and recommandation, tried a few and found myself enjoying them a lot.

3Ds though is also a very strong choice too. The sheer slew of titles it got in 2013, and still getting some in 2014, makes it one of the most powerful platforms this gen in terms of software. While some of these title are still a bit formulaic, the amount of 'em compensates so much for it, it's crazy. And it's backwards compatible with the DS, so hey, you get to experience the MASSIVE library of the DS as well as the 3ds.

It's major downsides are for me the hardware and software of the actual console. Especially after playing the vita, the lack of almost any form of multitasking as well as the still quite weak online solution makes the 3ds still behind in terms of actual OS design and hardware capability. And I often find myself not utilizing the 3d all that much as it either fatigues my eyes or even reduces the game's fps (like in Pokemon). The lack of a right stick (although you can have an additional one, although for a fee) makes it quite annoying for certain games.

Why not both? I have both. They fit different niches. It's hard to objectively say which is better.

It sounds like you may be leaning towards the Vita, in the end it is all up to you. I'm sure either one will end up being a good choice anyway.

If it wasn't for the proprietary, overpriced memory, I'd say get a Vita in an instant, especially if your claim that you have titles you're interested in for it is true. I asked this questions months ago, and the majority of people said 3DS. Here I am today and I barely play the thing and I don't find the way games are priced equal to the value I get from them. I'm not going to blame anyone, I don't have the right to, as I did ask strangers on the internet, but I'm just pointing out, I got a 3DS, and I quickly found out that I would have enjoyed the Vita more, especially since a friend of mine recently got one and it's amazing.

If you do get a Vita, get PS+, and a decent size memory card. PS+ gives you access to games that are normally $20-40 for barely a few bucks a month. Unfortunately you lose access to the game if you don't renew your subscription, but it's still a nice deal regardless.

The Vita is essentially a portable PS3. It's incredibly powerful and has the better controls.

That said, the Vita has a weird eclectic mix of games. It's not particularly strong in the game department.

The 3DS is a weaker system with more limited controls (only one touch interface and only one analog stick), but it has TONS of major games.

Without the PS4, I'd completely recommend the 3DSXL....but with a PS4 the Vita gets access to essentially all of the PS4 games as handheld games via Remote Play. WHEN the PS4's game library becomes huge and awesome, that will probably be an amazing feature to have. By that point I don't know which I'd recommend.

as long as nintendo keeps their draconian regional locking, their online services will never be good, the eshop of my region is empty, literally empty

Depends on which titles you want.

For JRPG's in general, the 3DS currently seem to have the greater selection, though there seem to be tons of japanese stuff (if not necessarily RPG's) heading the way of the Vita. It's hard to be interested in everything within an entire genre, though. I hear good things about several 3DS titles (Fire Emblem in particular), but the few specialty titles I were looking for were on PSP/PS Vita, so I've gotten one of those. Not that it's seen much use.

The Vita is undoubtedly the better system. However, (and I say this as a firm Sony fanboy), there is absolutely jackshit coming out for it. My 3DSXL has gotten more use in the last week than my Vita has in the last 6 months.

Well depends, right now there isn't much 3ds games on the horizon while Vita rpgs are getting announced left and right for western releases (Yay freedom wars!)

There are good games out for both right now, but coming soon nintendo probably has something new in it's pocket for E3.

One of the things that helped convince me to go Vita was one review of the DS that plainly stated, it's graphics look old. I think you have a point. They have to have a new system out soon.

To TC: If you are getting the PS4, you may want the Vita more than ever. It has remote play.

Good luck in your choice. I'm sure you will be happy with either.
