I'm genuinely surprised that you are surprised by this at all.
Nintendo has kind of
always done this, so even when I bought my 3DS on the first day it was released, I thought to myself "do I wanna wait for the 2.0? Nah, I'm content with this".
Gameboy > Gameboy Colour > Awesome Pikachu version
GBA > GBA with backlight
DS > DSXL > DSi
3DS > 3DSXL > 3DSi ?
I am surprised that there is no second analog stick because I remember getting the email from Nintendo saying "Because you are such an awesome person to buy the 3DS on the first day, we're going to give you all these free GBA and Nintendo games. We're also going to give you a free attachment for your 3DS that gives you a second analog stick. Thanks again for buying a 3DS so early!"

NO SECOND ANALOG STICK!?!?!!??!
10 points to anyone who recognizes my reference at least.
I actually have no idea, but I'm gonna guess AVGN
Not only are you right about it being unsurprising, but you actually missed out on a couple of hardware revisions.
Leaving out any variations that were purely cosmetic[footnote]Like the colored GB classics, which I think were called "Gameboy Live" or something similar[/footnote], It was:
Gameboy>Gameboy Pocket>Gameboy Light[footnote]This one was a Japanese exclusive. Just a Gameboy Pocket with a front light.[/footnote]>Gameboy Color
Gameboy Advance>Gameboy Advance SP>Gameboy Advance SP2[footnote]This one was an SP with a real backlight. The original had a front light.[/footnote]>Gameboy Micro
DS>DS Lite>DSi>DSi XL
And apparently so far its 3DS>3DS XL.
I fully expect at least one more hardware revision in the 3DS line, probably two.

Appropriate, since most of this post was effectively a name drop of various Nintendo handhelds.
