I've been playing MW2 a lot lately. Personally, I think it's an incredibly shitty game for the most part. Anyways, that's not what this is about. I've noticed that the knife in MW2 seems to be MASSIVELY over powered. It can A) Instantly kill B) auto-targets crazy well C) Be used in last/final stand which is annoying as hell and, most importantly, D) You pull it out literally instantaneously. Realism aside, I find the speed you pull it out at absolutely ridiculous. I can spray someone like hell and they just knife me as soon as they get close enough. The knife is detracting from a game that should focus on guns.
That was just MW2. I'd like to talk about other games and what is good about their melee systems and why it is better than MW2's.
I'll start with the Halo series. For the sake of even comparison, I will exclude the sword and gravity hammer from this. The melee in those had A) a realistic speed and B) didn't instant kill (most of the time). I find this system to work much better.
Next, Counter-Strike. If there was one game MW2 should have taken some cues from, this would be it. Unfortunately, none of the great gameplay found in CS is to be found in MW2. For those of you unfamiliar with Counter-Strike, the melee worked as such: Your knife was an actual weapon you had to switch to. Yes. Crazy, isn't it? You actually had to scroll your mouse wheel and select the knife. And then, even more crazy, there was no lunging! Hot damn! That is the most radical thing ever! And to top it off, you had a quick attack and a strong attack! Oh god! But it gets even better! They weren't instant kills. Ever. The only instant kill would be a strong attack to the back of the head. You know what this meant? It meant that to knife in Counter-Strike, you had to actually be skillful!
Then there are games that have no melee at all. This is pretty much everything pre-2000. The games focused purely on shooting. Why knife someone when you could just shoot them? In many ways, despite the hardware limitations, these games were the ones that had the most accurate melee system: None at all. Very rarely in todays world would a soldier find himself having to use his knife.
(Just as a side note, the Counter-Strike melee system is pretty much the same as all the other games that run on the Source engine.)
If your wondering where I'm going with this, then here it is. The thing I want to ask is: What is the best way for the melee system, assuming there even is one, to work in an FPS? A system that compliments players lacking skill, a system that forces you to position yourself well, a system that forces you to use tactics or something else entirely?
tl;dr talk about melee systems in FPSs
EDIT: Some of you seem a bit confused by the choices in the poll. Those games are just the best examples of the melee systems. CoD's instant kill knife lunging super fast thing, Halo's slight lunge but not always instant kill thing, Counter-Strikes knife is a seperate weapon thing, and the no melee at all thing. I'll add in some more choices and a short description
