Aerodynamics.

Yeah, pulling of a triple kill with a knife in CSS is way more satisfying than a triple kill in pretty much any other game.

Killzone 1 had a cool eye-candy melee system. You just had to press a button near an enemy to perform a finishing move on him.

Seems like Killzone 3 will be returning to that.
damn helghast ninjas...

yeah killzone did have a good system, though i find it amusing that you used the term eye candy, considering one of those animations was jamming the knife into one of their eyes.

xD
Thanks for reminding me of that one, it was pretty cool though.

I personally think there should be some form of quick melee to keep things intense, but it should be a finishing move as opposed to an insta-kill. The best example of this for me would be in TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. I don't know exactly how much damage it does, but needless to say it's nothing more than a simple whack for when you've wasted an entire clip on an enemy and is perfect for chopping off that last bit of health.

I love Battlefield 2 for its use of knives. I.E, a separate weapon that you have to select, with a limited range. That and the fact that some people are gentlemanly and accept knife duels ^^

However, in my preferred game, ArmA, there is no melee. Let's face it, if you're close enough to the enemy to stab them, you're doin' it wrong!

Each to his own, though...

Team Fortress 2 handled it pretty well. In TF2 you have to switch to your melee weapon (standard ones look differently, but have same stats for each class, except Scout's bat (hits weaker, but faster) and Spy's backstab-enabled knife), and it's not instakill, but all standard melee weapons have more chance to land a critical hit than ranged weapons.

Overall, it dosen't unbalance the game like MW2 knife does, but still provides an opportunity for close-quarters brutality.
I swear that the wrench, bottle and bonesaw are far more powerful than shovel, axe and koukri(although heavy and sniper sometimes seem powerful).
Hm... nah, I think they're all the same except the bat, knife and fists (fists definitely do more damage). And the unlocks can do more damage (skullcutter, equaliser...)

Also, why doesn't the bottle do more damage once you break it? :(

Depends on the game. In a fast paced shooter (CoD) an instant kill works well. Something with a bit slower pace (like TF2) it should require a couple of hits.

Counter-Strike is probably the best option of the ones you gave.

In a way, I prefer the melee to be slightly underpowered - then it doesn't steal away from the genre name, First Person Shooter, and encourages players to only use melee as a last resort.

Or, as a taunting gesture. Whichever floats your boat.
