I've always seen melee as a last resort deal that takes one or two hits in close quarters to take someone down.

If I run out of ammo or both weapons are on reload and I'm close enough I'll go for the knife /-insert other random melee weapon here-.

Well CoD had good melee once upon a time(when you had to be accurate), now with the bonuses you might as well make switch the knife to a longsword because that is what it feels like, and this brings the melee attack to the point of absurdity.

Actually the best one for me was in Star Wars: Republic Commando(the game that almost noone played), anyway it had an awesome animation for the melee, when you would knife or bash someones head in with your weapon they would squirt blood/oil/guts/... on your visor and then the helmet would wipe your visor clean, I don't know why but that felt so very awesome :D

You forgot Killzone 2 in your poll
The melee in it is a double hit: 1 uppercut with gun followed by rifle butt to the head
You miss the first hit and you're dont for to put it bluntly but if you are quick you can crack them with the second strike and knock them down at least

Killzone 3 beta has introduced throat cutting and neck snapping for if you get within touching distance. Bit further away and you get standard 1-2 combo

Killzone is underrated in my opinion and is always missing off these polls. Especially ones mentioning short/boring storylines
I was about to post something about Killzone, but you beat me to it. I got the pleasure of playing the KZ3 demo at a music festival last week. I stabbed a Helghast in the eye and it felt great.

I like the way they did it in the Battlefield games (not Bad Company). Like in CS, the knife is a separate weapon you have to take out. It's an instant kill, but spraying your enemy with bullets is a lot faster than pulling out your knife and stabbing them.

I'd say it depends on the game type and such, I think a game like FEAR works really well with Melee.

Bad Company 2 probably has the most balanced knife (when the bloody thing works) because the knife animation is a bit slower you can't just knife the entire team in a few seconds.

Killzone 2 had a good melee system - the knife can be carried out like in Counter-Strike and is more effective, although for speed you can just hit them with your gun.,

You have completely missed and omitted CoD's original and best melee system for that this poll is a bit of a fail since you basically have said CoD was always a knife lunge insta kill melee.

I agree with you. It is ridiculous that players can rock a FPS with a knife. There is a reason there is the expression, "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight."

I like TF2's melee system. Recently I've just been running around with Pyro using only the axe, racking up 4-8 kills each life xD

People fail these days...

I hated Halo's melee the most. Mostly because you got sent flying halfway across the map when you "Locked" on to somebody, if you combined it with a shotgun, it was instant kill.

EDIT: Some of you seem a bit confused by the choices in the poll. Those games are just the best examples of the melee systems. CoD's instant kill knife lunging super fast thing, Halo's slight lunge but not always instant kill thing, Counter-Strikes knife is a seperate weapon thing, and the no melee at all thing. I'll add in some more choices and a short description
I agree with everything you said, and you made some good points. Side note: MW2 would be fine if some things were removed, like the knife and perk combos. Also, you could add Medal of Honor and Bad Company 2 to a list with description of "insta-kill, but useless due to lack of CQC," but that kind of goes with the last resort/humiliation group.

OT: Best melee system that isn't just getting rid of it to me would be a weapon attachment/weapon slot system. You can have a bayonet on your weapon, such as an M4, or you can have a knife as your secondary instead of a pistol. To balance people being stab-tacular, if you have a bayonet-equipped assault rifle, you can't have a knife, and vice-versa. Also, they don't insta kill, or lunge, or teleport, and just like bullets, the damage dealt is dependent on the hit location, like CS.

i actually hate the knife in mw2 just cuz i ALWAYS push in the right analog stick when i try to turn suddenly, causing a 2 second delay followed by death

Personally, I've been playing CoD for ages, and I couldn't care less about the knife. It worked fine in MW1 and WaW (Aside from the animation sometimes playing and you not getting the kill), but the only thing that's 'overpowered' it is Commando. You can lunge from about 3 metres away from someone and stab them in the face, which is ridiculous. If they removed Commando, all would be well in my opinion.

Also, I don't get why people complain about realism in MW2. "OH THE KNIFE KILLZ IN 1 HIT WTF THATS UNREALISTIC" in a game where you can take a .45 round from a USP to the brain, duck down, then be utterly fine.
Because it's fanboys constantly claim MW2 to be realistic?

OT: Counter-FUCKING-Strike all the way. It actually takes SKILL to use and it's not an IWIN button.

Out of all FPS games though, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay IMO

Bad Company:
Knife instantly kills at point blank range, and you get the victim dogs tags as a memento :)
The knife system is so flaky. Sometimes I'll get two or three swipes in with blood spraying and sound effects playing but no effect. Other times it is like the very idea that I might use a knife is sufficient to kill a guy.

It's pretty obvious melee play is dumbed-down so it doesn't exhort an unhealthy amount of thinking for the average X-Box user.
nice, generic xbox user joke (sarcasm)

I don't see much wrong with any melee in games, I think the Halo 2 hit style suits it well, as well as the CoD style with instant kill, it's good for that type of fast paced game.

Melee shouldn't be one kill out of every ten like it seems to be in Modern Warfare.
You mean 9 of every 10 kills right?

But CSS is my favorite melee type thingy, because i have gotten into 3 on 1 knife fights and won, that and everyone knows knives make you run faster if you have on in your hand...still dont know how the scout makes you run faster....

Ehhh well I just cant 'get' melee combat. Its like it never occurs to me as an option, and when I actually try to use it I just end up having some super-awkward thrusting competition with an NPC that always manages to be either to the side of or below said thrusts. Its easier just to shoot them at close range - headshots are very easy when the guy's head measures a few inches across on the screen ...

So I am a very bad judge of which game has the 'best'. I tend to ignore it in every game I play.

That said I got into using the super sledge and glowey katana in Fallout 3.
