eh, I've always been an explosives man myself. Setting up c4 and trip mines.....so when people wander into a building I have set up in, it makes me giggle. People he hope to use knives and otehr melee weapons in hopes of getting some quick and easy kills are relatively easy to ambush.
As for melee weapons themselves, I think you should have to unlck and upgrade them along with everything else. And be able to throw them too.....

I do believe the poll is missing the most classic implementation of melee, the Mighty Foot. This simple device is both feared and dreaded by countless millions of natzi and mutated LA PD alien pig-cops.

Counter-Strike, because it's actually harder to get a knife kill. When you knife someone, it means more because it's not an instant kill.

Counter Strike hands down (from the list anyway), although if you actually knife in CS, its more or less just to humiliate someone, there are a few exceptions (Scoutzknives etc). Its done well, meaning you must be smart in your approach, you can't just rush directly at an emeny and hope to get the kill.

However, on the opposite side you have Modern Warfare 2, the kniving is completely overpowered, and yes, I admit that in my very breif stay in the multiplayer that I did make a pure kniving class and used that to get a few kill counts which I probably would not have if I had actually used an assault rifle and played like everyone else, its cheap.. but effective.

Halo 3 does melee well, although like MW2, in a close range situation, bashing your enemy with the butt of your battle rifle is much more effective than than shooting, which doesnt make all that much sense.. but its Halo.

I find COD 4 to work quite well. It takes skill to get close, since a few bullets will potentially kill someone. Usually I notice the really good players to use it if they come around a corner and run into you. They pull out their knife as I'm registering that they're there. Or they knife a sniper from behind instead of clumsily shooting him down next to his team mate. All these things happened to me at a recent lan party... That guy was good lol.

You forgot to mention how melee attacks with a knife are always several times more deadly than shotting someone.
I thought that Battlefield Bad Company had a good system. Knives were autokill but no lunging, autotarget, and you could die so easy that it wasn't an easy thing to pull off. However, the exact area that the enemy had to be in to be knived was dodgy, so normally me and someone else would stand there knifing each other with no results for a few seconds...

Well, okay. The knife is a bit too powerful, but at the same time it takes a bit of time to master. I remember trying to use it in multiplayer only to be shot dead when I use it too late or too early.

Has to do more with where you're positioned or how many times you shoot. If you melee behind, it's a kill. If you shoot your enemy more times and melee him from the front, it's a kill, etc.

I use melee to save ammo occasionally but that's it. I see a guy cornered up who doesn't seem to notice me, sneak up on him, slash him dead. No need to waste a clip.

I liked the melee in the first Call of Duty. All weapons could be used to clobber opponents, with varying degrees of success. A rifle with a solid stock? Smack their limbs and they'll get back up, crack them over the skull, they go down. But you could use anything, even the binoculars and grenades. I remember having crazy multiplayer games in United Offensive in which we'd clobber each other with smoke grenades. It did so little damage that it was more of a slap fight than a bloody melee brawl, and it was hilarious.

Melee is far too powerful now. It's supposed to be a last resort measure.

I like Halo's. It's simple, effective, and supplements the gunplay. Besides, the sequences where you have patrolling elites with grunts sleeping all around and you manage to silently off the whole lot of them without being noticed despite the fact that doing so should be impossible because you are a living fucking tank are rather fun in a guilty, sadistic sort of way.

Battlefield 2142 (and maybe 2??) had my favorite melee. It was your traditional switch to knife, and it was one hit one kill. But when you knifed someone you got their dogtags, and you could not collect one from the same player twice. I had a mighty heap of about 90.

The thing you should take into consideration is how easily or not you can actually get to your target. If you're spotted from a league away, you're pretty much done for. (Unless, of course, you see him first and kill him with your rifle/sniper/whatever you have that's decent enough at range).

Damn, ninja'd!

But this is my vote. I mean c'mon, with the knife in that game you really are kicking ass AND taking names.
My vote as well. Army are probably running out of iron ore at the factory the amount of times mine have been pinched by a random sprinting specialist.

Killzone 1 had a cool eye-candy melee system. You just had to press a button near an enemy to perform a finishing move on him.

Seems like Killzone 3 will be returning to that.

Cod's is a mess
Halo's is fairly well balanced but still a bit lame.
BF's is alright, but I prefere one button melee, to equipable weapon.
never played counter stirke strangly enough, even though its on my computer.

Aw, the poll doesn't have Gears of War, chainsaw bayonet, but not because it was the best melee system. It was just fun to watch someone get "chained" up in it. Bah, I would have voted for Gears still.

No melee. Bollocks to it. Most of the time the person knifing has to occupy the space into which I'm firing bullets. Not only does he manage to avoid them, but his single slash to my elbow - or thin air - is enough to incapacitate me. Balls to melee.

Left 4 Dead 2's style is good for me.
It's strong and does a good load of damage, the only problem is that the zombies are now within arms reach of you.
I'd prefer melee to not be a 1-hit KO, but with L4D2 you have hundreds of zombies mauling you at the same time so I'll allow it in that case.
