There are some really cool ways melee can be implemented in an FPS, but for the most part it's been restrained to just hitting people in the face with the butt of your gun.

But this is my vote. I mean c'mon, with the knife in that game you really are kicking ass AND taking names.
Hah, true!

Also it makes melee kills a thing of planned precision, no idea the ammount of times i would forgo the easy machine gun kill, chasing an enemy down to knife him just as he turned around to see me, thrilling stuff!

I think i prefer the use of the halo system though i still voted Cod/MW. Sure its unrealistic, but if you've let someone get close enough to actually stab you, you deserve it.

Also the point of it being used in last or final stand? You're on the floor bleeding out, pretty much disabled. You have a sidearm and your knife.
So if the opponent doesn't think to just shoot you, again their fault for being retarded.
ur kidding? one hit kill with a knife is bad enough, but knifing their shins kills? lets not forget the matter of leverage, as well...

OT i voted CS, but halo is on par with it. slicing with a knife when the other person has armour will shit all damage, and someone could survive being stabbed once (some people have been stabbed up to and over 7 times have recovered), and in halo, if you need a quick melee, you wont have time to pull out your knife. both do it well in each of their ways, but mw is anything but realistic in the knife department.

I think Counter Strike's melee system was great, same with Halo's (the whole assassination thing).

MW2, to me, is just a rubbish game in every respect :p So obviously I'd say that has the worst system.

Some games work without melee, but in FPSes like Doom3, it's very annoying not to have that instant melee button.

So, in the end, it works out with what's best for the game for me.

I like the Halo system. Why would I fumble around trying to get my knife out when I have a perfectly good club in my hands already?

I don't think it should be an instant kill in the back though. I'm going to say have Halo melee with Counter Strike damages, So you have to hit in the back of the head for a (not entirely garanteed) instant kill.

Killing Floor has the best melee out of any FPS I've played... it even has a specific class for melee, Beserker, which is just as viable a choice as any of the firearms based classes, since the melee in that game isn't just a back up for when you run out of ammo.

However, if you play it exclusively in first person mode, then Mount and Blade probably has the best melee out of any first person game.

None of those, Chronicles of Riddick:Escape from Butcher Bay and/or Condemned: Criminal Origins. Anyone who says otherwise is just showing their ignorance. Rather like the OP has.

It's also funny that some people are saying no, none of those where you press a button once and the person dies or you hold the button till the person dies, then say "X did it better" when it has EXACTLY THE SAME MELEE SYSTEM.

I hate melee that you cant control (i.e: pressing a button once swings your blade and then pulls your gun out again). So I would prefer Counter-Strikes melee system.

You know what this meant? It meant that to knife in Counter-Strike, you had to actually be skillful!
What it actually means is that there's no point using the knife at all, because using a gun is faster, better, and more versatile.

Melee has generally changed to an instant access one button attack with significant power because otherwise no-one ever does it. And if you've got a function in your game that no-one uses, you're doing it wrong.

Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict had the best-implemented melee system of any FPS ever made.

Really. Name one FPS that even comes close. You know what? You can't.

Ture, it really has a full fledged melee combat system ... amazingly it doesn't completely dominate the MP games .. only makes it more tense and a very edgy experience.

Halo comes second to it IMO.

I can and very easily ... F.E.A.R does it better than any other FPS ever did.

This is the way I see it.
If I get stabbed from behind, great.
If I walk around a corner into a knife, awesome.
If you're out of bullets and there's nothing lying around, obviously.

But if I'm shooting someone directly as they charge at me in a straight line, it seems they can take a full clip of bullets and survive, only to stab me in the chest for an insta-kill (Call of Duty, not that anyone was wondering).

I'm not one to complain about another player's "tactic", usually, and I suppose people use what works to their advantage, based on their own skills (or lack thereof) but this gets on my nerves pretty quickly.

The only other melee I don't like is the chainsaw in Gears 2, only because it has an incredible tornado sucking vortex power that pulls you in from a mile away (okay exaggeration but still).

I swear that the wrench, bottle and bonesaw are far more powerful than shovel, axe and koukri(although heavy and sniper sometimes seem powerful).
Naw, they're similar. Wrench and bonesaw just crit more (sentry kills and medic assists count as points, and contribute to crit chance).

Games like Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament and Turok where your melee weapon was seperately equipped always seemed to most fair and balanced to me since they prevented people from just using it as a cheap 'fuck you' option (surely we've all had the experience on MW2 where we've been shooting someone at close range only to discover that a slash across the thigh is more lethal than half a clip of SMG ammo in the torso).

In my opinion, the way that melee is done in MW2 could be easily balanced but it would require one of the following changes:

1- The 'Gears of War' approach: Remember how in Gears you couldn't use the chainsaw if you were being shot at? This would not only prevent people from simply rushing foward like Khorne berserkers (since it would be foiled by the other guy casually firing at you, like it would in real life) but it would help reinforce the idea of melee weapons being a last resort by making them weapons of oppertunity (a man with a knife would only stand a chance against a squad of men with assault rifles if he is careful and cautious).

2- The 'Turok' approach: In the Xbox remake of Turok, when you killed someone in melee you were treated to a short cutscene of your character stylishly slaughtering your enemy with the knife. This served two purposes, firstly, it makes knife kills very satisfying by adding an extra 'fuck you' element to it and secondly, it makes the knife wielder vulnerable by stopping them in place while they get to work (this means that you have to be careful about how and when you use the knife or you will find yourself an easy and helpless target).

3- The 'Jesus! That hurts!' approach: Rather than making melee weapons a one hit kill, make them highly damaging (so they're still worth using but not overpowered) and have it so that some aiming or accuracy is required (a stab to the chest or head is required for maximum effect, nicking someone's toe will just result in you looking stupid and dying shortly thereafter), for an additional bonus, an accurate stab from behind will result in a one hit kill (reward the use of stealth).

Definitely Counter-Strike. It's mostly used as humiliation if you sneak up on someone, or if they're just really bad. I've also managed to save myself with it a few times if both my primary and secondary weapons run out. It's something that's a pretty rare kill, which is what it should be. Melee shouldn't be one kill out of every ten like it seems to be in Modern Warfare.
MW2 pretty much allows it for ten out of ten. I will admit that I've gotten to a killstreak which lead to a nuke from nothing but knifing, but that was simply the fact that I didn't have much of a chance to shoot. Point-blank, three shots from a gun should kill you before you can knife somebody. =|

This argument was invalid because of the incredible crappy choice of FPS you gave me.. So i will not give you the attention you oh so desire!
