I think BF2 had a good melee option because it was actually useful for defending yourself when you ran out of ammo but still it wasnt as good as the guns if you weren't in a really close-quarters situation :]

You should add some more options in the poll :]

I like the Halo system to be honest. It allows melee to be a viable option in the game without it dominating a game which should primarily be a shooter. COD wouldn't be bad it if weren't so overpowered.

CS did it best, Halo is alright, MW2 is a joke. No you don't instantly kill someone if you stab them in the fucking foot. MW2s knife frustrates me like nobodies business, like people slicing at mid air and hitting me, or nubs with commando teleporting 10 yards to insta kill me.

Nothing beats a knife fight in CS, that shit was fun.

I think i prefer the use of the halo system though i still voted Cod/MW. Sure its unrealistic, but if you've let someone get close enough to actually stab you, you deserve it.

Also the point of it being used in last or final stand? You're on the floor bleeding out, pretty much disabled. You have a sidearm and your knife.
So if the opponent doesn't think to just shoot you, again their fault for being retarded.

Personally, I've been playing CoD for ages, and I couldn't care less about the knife. It worked fine in MW1 and WaW (Aside from the animation sometimes playing and you not getting the kill), but the only thing that's 'overpowered' it is Commando. You can lunge from about 3 metres away from someone and stab them in the face, which is ridiculous. If they removed Commando, all would be well in my opinion.

Also, I don't get why people complain about realism in MW2. "OH THE KNIFE KILLZ IN 1 HIT WTF THATS UNREALISTIC" in a game where you can take a .45 round from a USP to the brain, duck down, then be utterly fine.

I liked the system from Counterstrike the most, some of the most fun I've ever had in an FPS is knife fighting in that game. A strong knife attack to anywhere in the back instant killed people in CS: Source, but it at least took a small amount of skill to get behind someone instead of being able to teleport 10 metres and stab them in the hand for an instant kill.

The modern warfare knife system would work if knives had hitboxes, ie neck and headshots can instakill and foot stabs just annoy them

F.E.A.R. has the best FPS Melee in any game I've played. You can do bicycle kicks, slide kicks, punches, roundhouse kicks, it's all so amazing!

I said Halo. It's only a one hit kill if you manage to sneak up on somebody and hit them in the back, but it isn't underpowered for a finishing move.

out of your options i would have to say halo, however i did like the Wolfenstein: E.T. it had insta kill for when you get it in the back ofc, but from the front / side it takes quite a few stabs ^^

I would say out of the choices you gave, Counter-Strike would be my favorite. Though I think Dark Messiah Might and Magic had an excellent melee system. It was relatively simple, but the animations and feel of the attacks felt vicious.

Definitely Counter-Strike. It's mostly used as humiliation if you sneak up on someone, or if they're just really bad. I've also managed to save myself with it a few times if both my primary and secondary weapons run out. It's something that's a pretty rare kill, which is what it should be. Melee shouldn't be one kill out of every ten like it seems to be in Modern Warfare.

I think it would be really difficult to balance (I remember my brothers-in-law using the halo "stock" move all the time) in the same way in that other thread it's difficult to have all the variables that affect real firearms.

If I could choose a close combat weap it would probably be this>

I like how they've bothered including a protective cover for the knife. Almost makes it child friendly.

Pretty much this. I managed to get people to agree to a 40 minute all melee match. Never had as much fun since.

Amen. Too bad the sequel screwed it up.

Though, I will admit, the most fun I've ever had gaming online was in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, with an all-knife fight in the map Shipment. Damn, was that amazing.

I love the knife in Counter Strike: Source. Nothing more satisfying because you know you've just done something incredible difficult to pull of. And the sound of shanking someone in the back is damn good.

Despite its weaknesses, I like red orchestra's melee. Mainly because its hard as hell to kill someone in melee with anything other than a bayonet lug, so killing someone by beating them to death with the butt of your rifle takes some skill. When you consider one bullet usually kills you as well, you can see where melee becomes 1/100 kills at best.
