there was the friendly artificial intelligence in Mercenaries 2, if that counts.

"GET IN THE GODDAMNED VEHICLE!"

Oh, and there's a problem with the poll.

Warlords Battlecry 2's friendly AI could be better, as in actually attack the enemy when it's set to higher modes.
And lets not forget L4D's habit of the survivers running up to me slowly instead of blasting the hunters off me.

You know what is fun? Talking to those AI chatbots, because you can insult their mothers all day then ask them how the weather is and all is forgiven.

The worst is when you're on an escort mission and the NPC won't get in the bloody car!

Or not getting into the rescue vehicle until you run out and possibly get slaughtered.

Developers should be hanged for adding escort missions into their games.
ESPECIALLY if it's an MMO! God! How I hate escort missions! ARGH!

I'm sure I won't surprise anyone by throwing Resi 5 into the mix?

Though I must say, being shot in the back by my partner, thus wasting precious ammo AND coming across as somewhat unsupportive, is a nice experience.

For me, a prize goes to EA for Ao2:40th for the friendly AI, which saved my peppered behind countless times. A prize is taken from them for trying to give personality in ME2, resulting in self-professed (ie, 'won't shut up') badass Jack, as a biotic, sprinting in to the middle of crowds and kindly eating all of their bullets so I didn't have to.

Jolly good.

Sometimes it's difficult to decide whether you're better with a slack AI (standing there, chewing an invisible gobstopper and not moving unless you very pointedly make them) or a blundering bluffster, who'll charge in wearing the Emperor's new armour. Diagnosis: Deadness.

Can I just say, AI doesn't fully exist yet... not really anyway.

AI is a artificial existence that is intelligent on a sentient level and is self aware, like a cyborg or Mr.Smith out of the matrix.

Yeah...

I wish that keeping an NPC alive while escorting it was optional.
Oh, dear me, this. In some games, it'd be beautiful to have a 'right hook to the jaw, fireman 's carry to the exit' option. That said, any time a game makes your escortee invincible, karma shines on the developer. Whenever this doesn't happen, ie in almost every game ever, karma steps on a kitten's tail.

That are just pre-programmed responses. It gets a bit silly when you ask a bot if it wants to have sex with small children and the response is "still tired from last time".

On-Topic: I still haven't seen a proper AI. A decent AI would be one that tries to ambush you(hide until the player is close) does not blindly run around corners in to your shotgun fifty times and learns from the player but not too much.
I mean, I know there has to be some lack of intelligence to keep the game fair but that's no excuse for extremes like Call of Duty(move to specific part of cover and start shooting until killed).

I never finished L4D on singleplayer because of it's godawful Survivor AI, and never even tried L4D2 on singleplayer.

First ever play of L4D on release day. "I hear a Witch, lights off!" from NPC-Bill. Sure, I think, nice AI hearing things I wasn't in range to hear yet and warning me. Light goes off, and I walk past the door where I can now hear the sobbing.

"Pills here!"

Bill runs off into Witch with light on, 2 survivors get knocked on thier asses before I can run back and smack her down.

Logged off, never logged on single player again. Any AI which identifies a threat, then ignores its own advice with no recourse for me to tell them to stick close to me doesn't deserve the time of day.

You need to play a JRPG called The Last Remnant. The AI, and its whole mechanic in that game, is painful to use and impressively dim-witted.

As a whole I don't like friendly AI, it will at some point piss me off, screw me over or just be generally shite. I'd prefer to be alone or in control of everybody. I know having companions in TPS and FPS games adds something to them, but they annoy me with their stupidity.

When you have a genuinely good AI, like FFXIII, it trivialises the game, making it a /faceroll button stomp.

I loved the allies in Red Faction.

Sure you can take cover in that building full of explosive charges that I have to blow up for a mission.

or when you bump into a EDF vehicle and decide to outrun it (in a truck) but instead your allies show up and start a huge gunfight that you have no wish to be a part of so you leave and they all die and the sector looses moral.

yea the AI in that game could have done with a bit of tweaking.
