There actually is such a thing, in fact type it in on Google and you'll get quite a few. Not official ones of course, but still.

I don't think an mmo would work too well. It'd need a lot of big changes like; rpg elements on the attacks, gaining money from wild pokemon, MORE pokemon (or variations) and it'd need to be 3D.

What would work though is a co-op pokemon. Possibly with smaller private servers each holding between anywhere from 2-6 players or maybe even up to 20.
Basis is basically what's already incorporated into the game only instead of just having battles and trading, you can walk around the whole world instead!

What would be the advantage to Pokemon being an MMO over just keeping it as a single player game with multiplayer capabilities?

I keep hearing people say that it would "work well" as an MMO, but what would you do in the MMO that you can't do with a single player game? Group content? Dungeons? Pokemon raids? How would that work, much less be balanced? How would you handle rare or legendary pokemon in a MMO, would there only be one and whoever gets it fist is awesome and everyone else is out of luck? Would it be a ridiculously rare spawn that everyone could camp? Would it just not be that rare, and eventually everyone is running around with everything?

What would be unique to a Pokemon MMO that we don't already have in the single player games, other than seeing hundreds of other players running around in the tall grass with you? What would make people pay a subscription for this, instead of just digging out their DS and battling or trading with people for free?

Now what I WOULD love to see a console Pokemon that is remade from the ground up with all of the content/pokemon from all of the Gameboy games. No more reusing old sprites and game engines, and no more limiting the pokemon available in a single game. Add more depth to it, have random natural disasters happen that you need certain types of pokemon to stop, and other random events.

Take the world they've developed and make it actually feel like the world, and keep on expanding on the online features. I'd rather see them improve on that than try to tread into MMO territory and possibly lose what makes Pokemon fun in the first place.

I think Pokemon is probably the single most compatible franchise for a MMO, heck it's almost begging to be made into one.... unlike others *looks at the Twilight MMO*

But what would really be a kicker is if they changed the combat system to be more Real time, something closer to the anime I guess. YOU decide the exact moment when Bulbasaur launches it's vine whip, YOU decide to use Gust to counter the poison sting, YOU strafe to avoid incoming tackles. But that's just my preference I guess, I mean, why change a formula that works right? and GOD knows Pokemon worked over the last decade...

another interesting thing would be if you could choose to specialise into training, breeding, coordinating, ranger...ing? or whatever other stuff you can do to pokemon (that didn't sound right...)

also... 3D and instead of random encounters, they spawn (yeah like most other mmos... flame me!) but again that's my own personal preference.

That a good idea. I think it would best work if the world was like Guild wars, where only the people in your party could go into the world with u. And Gyms would be like the warcraft instances.

I like the idea of a Pokemon universe where you can become almost anything, in the same way that RPGs had class types, just replace them with ones relating to Pokemon: Breeder, Battler, Contest Co-ordinator, etc.

It may not work, but it'd be interesting to see Pokemon from a slightly less pure, ever so good, "helping everyone I can" perspective.
I really enjoy the Pokemon games, but in Gold, where the "Rival" character stole his Pokemon instead of being given it and slowly came to the realisation that he was treating his Pokemon wrong, I found him more interesting than in the other games where it's very "Oh hey, we grew up together so now you're my rival".

Just my thought, obviously it may be REALLY difficult to actually create.

oh! more food for the brainz!

What if you could even join specific factions/organizations such as... um... I dunno team , Gym trainees (as in specializing in a single type), Reserchers with the benefits and of course restraints they would bring? Like being part of a team you have access to a lot of technological pokemon related...stuff, but can't use public facilities (pokemon center, mart, gyms) for obvious reasons, as a Gym trainee you have to restrain the types of pokemon you can use but get special unique TMS for them, and so on...

Maybe a one time event or an award of helping with the beta? I don't think it would be that good of an idea to make it so easily avaiable since it is legendary. Maybe one for the beta help and others would be through one a year events.

People might get bored with the idea since it's almost just a regular pokemon game with an online world.

What would really be cool is if when you battle with your pokemon you take control of them and it acts like a 3D 3rd person combat game. That would be sweet.

i think it could be developed into an good idea with some work. I first thought of it like runescape, with basically everyone being controlled by another player in the world, but then i thought that would get TOO chaotic, and not still to the seemingly calm world of pokemon. I am thinking it may be do able a bit like WOW - a 3D world from a third person prospective, but do you think it would be better with as realistic graphics as possible, or cartoony - sticking to the origins? i would like to hear what you all have to say. :)

The 3rd person pespective is what i was thinking of, as it would be a lot better than something like runescape's for this. As for the graphics, I say cartoony, as the realistic stuff would kind of ruin the feel of it to me.

Seconded for life!

I'd love to play a Pokémon MMORPG and I would be glad to pay for it too. The latter statement is utterly crazy coming out from my mouth since I hate to pay for anything be it games or music... [small]*cough-♥torrents♥-cough*[/small] I've wished Pokémon were real for years now and I still do so a Pokémon MMORPG would probably be the closest I'd get to real Pokémon, catching them "myself" and all that sort of thing... 。◕‿◕。

That does have a very nice ring to it, would be a lot more exciting than turned based combat.
