I am asking the Question because a lot of people in other countries call anyone from the UK "English", I am Welsh and I hate being called English I also have a few Scottish friends who feel the same, all I want is that Wales and Scotland are given the respect and recognition they deserve and that people stop insulting us, our history and our culture by calling us English all the time, Wales and Scotland were actually countries ruled by our own Royal families hundreds of years before England ever was, the Tudor Royal Family that includes Henry VIII and Elizabeth 1st were decended from Welsh Royalty.
It is about time people seen that just because Wales and Scotland have had English rule forced upon them that UK ? England, but as long as the UK is ruled by the English the culture and history of the Welsh and Scottish will continue to be repressed.
Fe godwn ni eto - We will rise again.
See, that's more due to ignorance than being disrespectful. I'm sure most people would be quite contrite once you explained the 'British but not English' point... *shrug*
Though here, I'm with Daystar Clarion, insomuch that it suits (broadly) everyone's interests to remain as part of the UK. Besides, your history is hardly repressed, that's stretching it, while I admit that your traditional culture is... in any event, the dying out of a culture is hardly anything new and it's continued to happen in ostensibly civilised countries. In fact, Alsatian culture (the, as far as Alsatians were concerned, happy compromise between French and German) was completely wiped out by the French in the 1920's. Silesian culture hardly exists now as well. Granted, neither example held sovereignty in their own right, but one should note that both of these regions have always been more populous than Wales, or at least on a par.
OT: I hardly identify as being English for anything except cricket.
