Since the PSN is starting to come back online, I'm seeing a lot of people saying that they would like Sony to give them backwards compatibility for PS2 games.

This confuses me because I have always had backwards compatibility for PS2 games. I have had it since I first got my PS3 and still do now. I didn't mod it and I've downloaded every update, so I just don't get it.

Does it depend on what model of PS3 you have? I have one of the fat 80 gigs from when the system was still fairly new.

Does anyone know what's up with that? Is your PS3 backwards compatible with PS2 games?

The very first 60 and 80 gig PS3s did. I'm pretty sure they discontinued it shortly after that. Also its not just a switch they flick, if you want backwards compatibility you would have to buy a new console.

I still have my 2nd gen PS2. You know, the really bulky one. So I don't worry about backwards compatibility on my PS3.

But as far as I am aware, only the really old PS3s still have backwards compatibility. The removed the feature fairly early on for the newer versions.

The easy to tell if it can is: Is the silver on the console a chrome like effect, or dull silver coloured plastic, if it's shiny, it can, if it's dull, it can't.

Also I said yes as I got a 60gb specifically for the ps2 compatibility and upgraded the hard drive to 320gb.

Ok. I just saw a lot of people saying Sony should give them that instead of 30 days of Plus, or whatever. I guess that won't be happening then.

I'm fairly sure that the all the Ps3 models before the slims were compatble with ps2 games. From what I've heard, that removal was why they could afford to make the price cut in slim models.

I was not aware of that. I guess you learn something new every day.

Not really.

All they need to do is make an emulator-like program with the ps2 stuff, then release it in a firmware update.

Okay, it's not EXACTLY that simple, but it's not going to require a new console. With a few hours of questionable downloading I could play PS2 games on my pc. Why would the PS3 somehow be different?

I would kill for full backwards compatibility, (especially if we're allowed to install them and play them off the hard drive), I might actually turn my PS3 on for the first time in several months.

IIRC, and thats a big IF, only the first patch of PS3, the most 60 Gb variant had PS2 support because it bsically involved havong a funtional PS2 "built in" the PS3. To cut cost, and because I think most people went for the cheaper non ps2 compatible version, it was soon discontinued.

The only backwards compatible model is the 60GB console. The 40GB that followed and every console since then hasn't been compatible. Unless they tried to reintroduce backwards compatibility with the 80 (which I don't think happened), and considering the 80GB came out around 2 years after the PS3 launched, are you sure it's an 80 you have? If you got it when the PS3 was still newish, I'd say you have a 60, they didn't stop making those 'til around 2 - 2 1/2 years ago.

PS3 in living room has backwards compatibility. PS3 in bedroom does not. Don't really care though since there isn't a single PS2 game I would play anymore that I don't have on PC.

Well the only reason they cut backwards compatibility in the first place was to cut the cost of the console, as they were making a loss with every sale. It stands to reason that the cost was due to hardware being added to each console to make them backwards compatible, so its not just a simple update, it is to do with the hardware. Also, I imagine that the reason your PC could potentially run PS2 games but not your PS3 would be something to do with your PC being able to run DVD disc, but not Blu-ray, although thats just blind speculation.

This is incorrect. All 60 gig models are backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games, the same goes for the launch 20 gig models that did not come with a wireless card. Some 80 gig models are backwards compatible with PS2 game but not all models are, mine is not. All 80 gig models play most PS1 games. The 80 gig models that are 100% BC are the ones with 4 USB ports and were typically sold as special edition pack ins, Like the gun metal gray Metal Gear Solid 4 edition PS3

What this guy below said. Mine is one of those, except mine is black and not gun-metal grey.

Dunno. It's not an issue of the PS3 *not* being able to play DVD's, I've used it as a DVD player several times.

A legal PS2 emulator is apparently 12 MB, that doesn't include the BIOS though. If it was particularly large, it would be a pain in the ass to fit it all into the firmware and keep it separate from the hard drive that we actually use, and probably cost more to put together.
