There is a discussion to this, so bear with me...

For those that were there at the time- Goldeneye was the bomb. It was bringing people together to blow each other away before Halo was even conceived. The controls, the level design, the uncompromising difficulty, the unlockable cheats, everything was just... Perfect. All these years later, with Wii's virtual console, XBLA, and the Playstation Store, there's always been something that gamers have pleaded for a re-release of with one worldwide unifying voice: Re-release Goldeneye!

And now, it is happening- Activision has made a deal with Nintendo and Goldeneye is heading for Wii. Like many others I was overjoyed to hear about this.

That is, before I found out what had been lost to make it happen.

See, Eurocom's upcoming Goldeneye remake is not the only remake that was in production. According to an in-depth article that has already scoured both official and non-official sources http://mundorare.com/news/2008/01/never-say-never-again/ , Rare Ltd (the company that... you know, actually MADE Goldeneye in the first place) had their own version of Goldeneye prepped and ready for release. This version had features such as:

-Flawless recreation of the original gameplay. The game used the original code, running on an Xbox 360.

-Four-way online split-screen multiplayer, with the option to see what the other three players can see, even over Live.

-New multiplayer maps, including the single player Dam, Depot or Frigate levels as multiplayer arenas.

And most notably of all:

-High definition graphics with the option to switch back to the original N64 graphics any time.

That's right: just like with the recently rereleased Monkey Island games, with a mere press of a button the graphics can switch instantly from the updated visuals to the exact original visual style and back again. Supposedly the game was in talks at one point to be released on all three of the current gen consoles which would have pleased absolutely everyone. Screenshots are floating around the net of the crisp new look of the game, and there is even a 2 minute leaked beta gameplay movie on youtube here: [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OM_iLkIJ9Yg[/link].

Unfortunately, Nintendo pulled the plug on it to prevent it from being released on a non Nintendo platform. Apparently they choose to pretend that Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie and Conker: Live and Reloaded don't count.

Having discovered all of that, and taking another look at the Wii Goldeneye, things become more and more tragic. The game is being developed by Eurocom- a company that hasn't made a decent bond game for ten years and has already shown their propensity for filling bond games with scripted events and cutscenes all over the place. It becomes apparent in the Goldeneye Wii trailer (which you can view again here [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y74GB9efwDE[/link]) that this remake has very little in common with the Goldeneye that defined the genre at all. It's filled with all the useless fluff, plot hole swarming enemies, QTEs and eye candy over substance Quantum of Solace was so panned for. Worse still, it's thrown out arguably the best suited FPS control scheme ever seen on a console in favour of one that mimics the PC like most others. Considering it's Eurocom, it will most likely also be filled with constant talking and orders being relayed to you via an earpiece, holding your hand all the way through the game and displaying one of the enduring reasons Goldeneye has always remained the most loved bond game: It gave you your tasks and just let you get the hell on with them without interference and work it out for yourself. You know- like a spy would.

So having heard about this, and possibly having read that article (which I strongly reccomend you do to get better insight into the political maneuvering at Nintendo/Activision/Microsoft etc, what do you think? Are you indifferent? Enraged at being denied this other remake that could have been? Or are you glad it's being Call of Dutyised at the hands of Eurocom?

(Also this pic was on the second page but it's probably better suited to being here)

Activision grabbed the Bond license as Nintendo of Japan said no to sharing. I would imagine these events are connected. (i.e. Blame Activision)

As I expected. It was the only reason I could imagine Goldeneye being released only on the Wii. It was the sensible thing to do for Nintendo though since, as you pointed out, it is such a revered game and so it would greatly benefit them if it were exclusive to their consoles only.

Apparently they choose to pretend that Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie and Conker: Live and Reloaded don't count.
As was plainly stated in the article that you kept telling us to read, Nintendo were only successful because the Bond licence is owned by Activision. The game series you've listed are all owned by Rare, so Nintendo won't be able to stop any of those games being produced.

Having discovered all of that, and taking another look at the Wii Goldeneye, things become more and more tragic. The game is being developed by Eurocom- a company that hasn't made a decent bond game for ten years
However, if you look at their more resent game titles, you'll see their last big title (Dead Space: Extraction) was a great game, so I have good confidence that they would likely produce more quality shooting titles.

and has already shown their propensity for filling bond games with scripted events and cutscenes all over the place. It becomes apparent in the Goldeneye Wii trailer (which you can view again here [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y74GB9efwDE[/link]) that this remake has very little in common with the Goldeneye that defined the genre at all.
Huh? After watching that, I was surprised at how similar the two were: the level structures are very similar, the story is the same (though fleshed out more) and the multiplayer is near enough untouched bar the extra modes. They've really done the bare minimum to modernise the game. Wait, is that the problem you have with it, that it's being modernised? I'm sorry but it's kinda necessary. This game is competing with current games and by today's standards, the original is shit. It was good for it's time, but since then console shooters have taken major cues from the game and improved upon them. The changes Eurocom have made don't encroach upon what made the original good.

Also, based upon extraction since it's the only game I've played from them, they seem to have a good balance between story and gameplay, so I'm not too worried that they'll mess it up in this game.

It's filled with all the useless fluff, plot hole swarming enemies, QTEs and eye candy over substance Quantum of Solace was so panned for.
Again, they did all this stuff well in DS:E, so I suspect they've improved a lot since their last Bond game.

Worse still, it's thrown out arguably the best suited FPS control scheme ever seen on a console in favour of one that mimics the PC like most others.
The wii controller is closer to a mouse than a normal controller, so this decision is a good one, though I don't know how the classic controller will work - doubt it would beet the Metroid Prime layout.

This is by no means certain, so no need to complain about it yet. Plus, why wouldn't a normal spy be allowed to go in with prior knowledge of the best routes to take?

So to sum up I'm quite optimistic about Goldeneye 007 Wii.

well it does seems to be a depressing that they did put an good game on the ZX-81 of the 21st century but Nintendo has to wipe that causal gamer image off somehow.

A bit upset, I mean, I would love to see them try to make a new Bond game. Maybe even based off of one of the original books, inlikely as that may be, but I have no real reason to be against this

If it was on XBLA I would actually get it, but since no one I know actually plays the Wii online, it would be a pointless purchase.

But yes, the Wii-exclusivity idea seems like little more than a cash grab.

Well whatever really, Perfect Dark was way better than goldeneye, and they're both about as nostalgic, so I'd always go for that one. I'm much more miffed the XBLA remake isn't on steam. The trailer for the goldeneye game make it look pretty decent at any rate; I'll wait and see, but I'd rather play that than the old one, which hasn't aged that well.

i'll probably get it. though i liked GoldenEye, i wasn't a big enough fan of it to let it get in the way of enjoying the remake. i just wish they'd used Brosnan instead of Craig

Honestly, the only problem I have with a Goldeneye remake is they replaced Pierce Brosnan with Daniel Craig. SO WHAT if it's not on the XBox Live or PSN? Play it or don't. Buy a Wii to play it, or don't. It's not like you have to go live in a cave because you aren't playing a 15 year old game (my God! has it really been that long?). It's the same as any other game.

FPS Wii games... eurgh. I simply can't play one without making my character look like he/she's having a fit.

It's got all the stuff the Quantum of Solace game had in it? That's one of the games I decry the most! Apart from Dark Sector (I hate Dark Sector with the passion of the Christ). It's like people try earnestly to fail in the end. If it's a remake of a much-loved classic, new gimmicks like QTEs are simply and ineluctably wrong. Don't they realise what made the game much-loved in the first place?

And as I oft like to mention, Brosnan at least looks like a suave and sophisticated agent, no matter how unlike reality that is. Craig looks like a bruiser. And his ears stick out. Grumple grump.

I think in the long run it -is- a problem I have, especially after seeing the much more faithful version that could have been. As Perfect Dark on XBLA has shown- the Gameplay holds up perfectly fine just the way it was. Besides, as Reborn says:

There is no such thing as 'good for it's time'. Good gameplay transcends time and space. The first Mario is just as enjoyable now as it was on first release without adding in motion blur or a techno remix, Quake and Unreal Tournament do not need regenerative health or cover mechanics to 'improve' them, Outrun does not need photorealistic race tracks to be enjoyable, and Goldeneye does not need jumping or 3rd person sections to appease a mob.

It's like getting students to appreciate Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet as if it was how the story was originally shown

Not only that, but in Goldeneye's case, people are still playing it specifically because it is different and has not been surpassed in certain ways. And yes, I'm thinking of the controls here. Apart from Perfect Dark, Timesplitters and a few others, many games have blindly tried emulating the PC aiming on a gamepad since Halo came out, which is actually regressing console FPS progress. What if someone took Half Life and remade it so everything was set in small, self contained levels instead of the sprawling progressive path that it took? What if Gordon Freeman started mouthing off quips to other people, as Daniel Craig does in the Goldeneye Wii trailer? Sure it might placate 12 year olds hooked on Modern Warfare 2, but it's not helping the genre any.

Ugh.

Why must all my dreams be dashed upon the rocks of greed and retardedness?

I gotta fault Ninty a bit here, despite being a huge Big N fanboy.

*pained sigh*

Well, at least it gives me a reason to play something other than Mario Kart or Smash Bros on my Wii.

Well I would highly prefer the Rare version but the one that is actually coming out doesn't look half bad although I don't like the "modernized" stuff they are adding and I really hated Daniel Craig as James Bond so that is the biggest problem I have with the remake I hate Daniel Craig as James Bond and would prefer any other Bond

I will buy the DS Version of this game, the Golden Eye they released for it a few years back wasnt horrible, and I like the DS as a shooter platform.

But I kinda agree with your point. Its one thing to judge a game before its out. But, looking as how the creators wanted to do justice to the game, I can see why your mad.

I kinda wish they wouldnt remake this game. Games then are different then games now. On an N64, it was 4 human players. FPS's now adays aim for 16+. If they try to do that, the game just wont support it well. Golden Eye with 16 human players would just be... well, unpleasant (if they remake the maps as is, without scaling them up further).

Woww this makes me angry. I'm a late bloomer to video games and even I spent weeks playing GoldenEye. I might well kill to have that exact copy but with better graphics. I really hate it when Nintendo pulls a dick move like this. For all their image as being the funnest and most family friendly of the big 3, they've got to be one of the most terrible electronics companies out there.
