Age verification makes me angry!! Why do I have to do it even if I'm signed in. Please shoe some love for getting rid of it.

Do you happen to know love's size? I can never get the heel to fit properly...

My understanding is that it's a legal thing. If you've got the age gates, it's the user's fault if they "break" it. If you have content that should require a gate, but you don't have one, you're liable. As part of the security, no information is kept past a temporary cookie that gets removed when you close the browser, which is why you have to put the age in each time.

Why are you asking for my birthday?
For some events, promotions, or content we are asked to limit access to users of a certain age by the event sponsor or content owner.

I've put in my birthday before, why do I have to do it again?
The guidelines for handling age gates require that we save your information for your current session only. Unfortunately this means that you'll have to enter your birthday again to see this content after your close your web browser. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.
Isn't the forum age minimum around 13? That's why they have it even if you're signed in.

EDIT: Derp, just realized this also applies for other things (like Steam), and not just the Escapist.

Every time Steam requires me to enter my age, even though I'm logged in, I can't help but wonder if Steam is collecting data on birth dates - because I'd love to see how many other people were born on January 1st, 1900.

THIS! SO MUCH THIS!

At least if I go to the website (as opposed to using the Stem client) I don't have to fill in my age EACH TIME! So many times I've clicked on a game to check something like who was the developer or how much it costs or something only to get "As a loyal customer who has supplied us with their birth date, please use these awful dropdowns to do it once again. Also, we'll ask you again next time you click on this or any other age restricted game. We don't care about you, have a nice day. (Lol, jk, forget the last part.)". Look, I understand the need to have age verification, but at least set the dropdowns to what I have in my profile, so I just have to click "Confirm". I know you can do it because it's friggin' easy.

It's all legality purposes. Because say someone else is on my computer and by default on my account. Most of my friends don't know my birthday so they'd have to enter their own age. If they're too young to see the content then they get denied. I take my laptop when babysitting. It would be entirely possible for me to leave my laptop on a table and turn my back to grab something or to go get the child something and the child i was watching to try and access something they shouldn't be. Much as an inconvenience as they can be i don't mind them.

While I think it is kind of ridiculous that it doesn't simply verify you going by your profile when you're signed in, I don't really have much of a problem with it. It takes me all of five seconds to select a random date, which is usually somewhere in '64/'63.

But in the end, it's kind of pointless. For legal reasons, I understand. But what thirteen year old is actually going to say they're thirteen and not see a trailer for a game they legally shouldn't be allowed to play anyway?

Eh, I'm mostly apathetic. I did have the same thought though, with the confusion about why Escapist needs to ask accounts that tell the owners age.

It's because of a stupid law. Not much a site can do. Good luck getting enough people fired up enough to write their congressmen over a minor annoyance to get the law changed, too.

Because verifying means that you're going to verify you're really old enough. It's a legal thing which could land them some problems if they got rid of it.

I like that Steam had made their verification save the last age you entered so you wont have to choose your age, it saves me some time even though I usually would just scroll down to 1990. or similar. For all of you who wants to complain about the age verification, if it wasn't here that would mean some legal trouble for the sites that had it. Having an age verification system let's them take a stance that they have done their part.

I hate stuff like this. One time when I was checking out a game on steam, up pops the age verification, I click to change the year, oh! Then it decides to lag and somehow submit that I was born in 2010! NICE.

I don't get mad at the sites for it though; it's not their fault. It's pointless legal accountability. Any twelve year old with a functioning brain can figure out how to get past it, so unless they're going to install some ID scanner into every computer sometime soon it won't have any effect.

What if a person kid brother logs on the to account? Sure it WOULD be THEIR fault , but everyone always like to put blame on others and the worst part is , it works.

I think they are just covering their ass. Escapist doesn't exactly log you out for you. So anyone can come by and just start using it.
