Awful, just plain awful. I did only play as Marines and Aliens, but it never gave me the choice to play as pred, and so, I had a bad time.
I shall not be getting this game, or even renting it.
Would you mind explaining why the game was awful? (other than just 'because I didn't get the character I wanted') I think the reason you might have found yourself unable to play as the predator is because there appears to be a system in place that prevents people from selecting particular races if they've already been chosen by a lot of players, otherwise, you'd just have everyone playing as the Predator (imagine being the only marine player in the game having to take on five predators).
The game was...alright, not great, not bad (average if you will).
Playing as the Alien was confusing at first because the controls and abilities you have aren't very clear (I still have no idea what the hell 'focus mode' is) but after a while I soon found myself doing very well by sneaking along the ceiling and picking off camping marines and predators with my tail (the way you'd expect an Alien to act).
Playing as a Predtor was ok although you were painfully slow (normally not a problem until you realise we're dealing with a medium where lag could turn this strategic weakness into something that results in players dying for reasons beond their control) and I rarely found myself being able to try them out because almost everyone in the games I was in snatched their places first (probably due to the fact that he can punch people to death in one or two strikes thanks to those machettes he keeps attached to his arms at all times).
Playing as a Marine I had mixed feelings about, on the one hand it was one of the only times I can recall being somewhat on edge and nervous in a multiplayer game (it's the motion tracker, I swear) but on the other it is very clear at times that you are the 'victim race' (in other words, everyone else is bigger, tougher and faster than you and you just have to accept that). The sheer disadvantage of being the weakest race is supposed to made up for by superior firepower (and having a control scheme that actually makes sense) and this sounds reasonable enough until you realise that most of the guns you will find aren't much better than your starting weapon (I recall shooting an Alien three times point blank with a shotgun only to be stunned and grabbed by it). People have complained about auto-aim but this happens to be one of your few saving graces as a Marine (also, the Smartgun has auto-aim anyway, even in the PC version).
I had good times ripping people to shreds and emptying clips into horrors from beind the moon but I also got a little bit annoyed every time I found myself getting killed from out of nowhere or by an inescapable one-hit kill grab attack so overall, it was ok (and I still plan to get it) but it wasn't epic or excellent.
