It's a demo so I'm not worried overall, but it's buggy, laggy and clunky among other things.
And a Demo is a demonstration, not an alpha or beta test.

I hate how the industry has conditioned us to accept inferior, buggy products under the expectation that eventually, it will get fixed.

If you bought a brand new car and it had a leak in the gas tank and the engine was prone to cutting out randomly and without warning... there would be outrage.

Yet we accept memory leaks, CTD's and game stopping bugs as if its to be expected.

Awful, just plain awful. I did only play as Marines and Aliens, but it never gave me the choice to play as pred, and so, I had a bad time.

I shall not be getting this game, or even renting it.
Would you mind explaining why the game was awful? (other than just 'because I didn't get the character I wanted') I think the reason you might have found yourself unable to play as the predator is because there appears to be a system in place that prevents people from selecting particular races if they've already been chosen by a lot of players, otherwise, you'd just have everyone playing as the Predator (imagine being the only marine player in the game having to take on five predators).

The game was...alright, not great, not bad (average if you will).

Playing as the Alien was confusing at first because the controls and abilities you have aren't very clear (I still have no idea what the hell 'focus mode' is) but after a while I soon found myself doing very well by sneaking along the ceiling and picking off camping marines and predators with my tail (the way you'd expect an Alien to act).

Playing as a Predtor was ok although you were painfully slow (normally not a problem until you realise we're dealing with a medium where lag could turn this strategic weakness into something that results in players dying for reasons beond their control) and I rarely found myself being able to try them out because almost everyone in the games I was in snatched their places first (probably due to the fact that he can punch people to death in one or two strikes thanks to those machettes he keeps attached to his arms at all times).

Playing as a Marine I had mixed feelings about, on the one hand it was one of the only times I can recall being somewhat on edge and nervous in a multiplayer game (it's the motion tracker, I swear) but on the other it is very clear at times that you are the 'victim race' (in other words, everyone else is bigger, tougher and faster than you and you just have to accept that). The sheer disadvantage of being the weakest race is supposed to made up for by superior firepower (and having a control scheme that actually makes sense) and this sounds reasonable enough until you realise that most of the guns you will find aren't much better than your starting weapon (I recall shooting an Alien three times point blank with a shotgun only to be stunned and grabbed by it). People have complained about auto-aim but this happens to be one of your few saving graces as a Marine (also, the Smartgun has auto-aim anyway, even in the PC version).

I had good times ripping people to shreds and emptying clips into horrors from beind the moon but I also got a little bit annoyed every time I found myself getting killed from out of nowhere or by an inescapable one-hit kill grab attack so overall, it was ok (and I still plan to get it) but it wasn't epic or excellent.

Well it is only a demo and the point to demos is to give a sneak preview, now from what I hear the demo is a blast to play (although from the sounds of it it would be a lot better with the tean deathmatches)

If there are problems we have to remember a lot of the times the game we play a demo for isn't always going to be the same when the final product comes out.

But from what I hear from almost all of my friends it is a blast from whatever species they played and quite well balanced. And isn't that what we all want....balance

But I'm gonna give it a go as soon as I get on XBL downloaded few minutes ago but I've gotta sleep

I can't play the demo because the game is apparently banned in Germany... no surprise there.

Good thing there's always British Ebay (when the game comes out).

Good thing I can return it if I don't like it. Eb games ftw.

Fair enough. First of all, let me clear things up: I didn't want to play as pred that much, but wanted to try him out since the other two were awful.
Let's start out first with the marine. While the motion tracker was nice, the guns were pretty useless. The only time I ever really got kills was when I saw someone being executed very near me, and I still had to shoot about 20 bullets to kill the marine who was being executed, and another 40 to kill the already weakened alien. Also, playing as the marine, the game seems to have the whole "look everywhere approach" and I did, but the lag was so bad it ruined my experience, and when I did spot an enemy behind me, too far away for me to shoot, the sprint felt like it barely increased my speed, so that didn't help.

The alien's problem was that it seemed to stutter whenever it got shot. This wouldn't be so bad if it only happened when it got hit by a close range shotgun or the like, but no, for me, I was a good 30-40 metres away from a marine, getting hit by assault rifle fire, and just replaying the stutter animation until I die.

I decided to quit before I got to play as pred, because I thought that any more of this game, and I may have to cut/hang/lobotomise myself.

ive got to say so far the aleins seem to be the most fun as i just go into that big main room area keep a look out for other aleins in case they try to gsneak up on me but otherwise stay still therefore marines carnt see you on the motion detectors and the preds can reaely do anything as they never pick up ranged weapons it gets especially fun when you have a pred stareing at you only for a marine to attack him then you drop down kill the marine then kill the weakened pred as it trys to run. I've also heard that theres a move that lets you kill someone instanly if you drop straight down on them but i havent managed it yet

I thought it was well good, although I didn't experience any lag so that may be it. I thought the marine was really good, I think I got a kill streak of about 8 or so before dying.

The alien, now that was pretty wierd, it took a while to get around the walking on the walls mechanic but once I got it I was running jumping and killing mofos left right an centre

I never got to play as the predator

Overall I'm not very good at multiplayer games but I enjoyed the demo, it was pretty scary being the marine and feeling like something is round the next corner haha

That isn't what I said at all. I said they can't equip weapons, not that they don't start with them. It is impossible once you have picked up a weapon to have it as your primary weapon until it runs out, you can only use it once you equip it each time you wish to use it, which makes combat extremely awkward.

You have also probably not played the two PC versions that this is supposed to be similar to. All races had classes and so they all had different weapons to compensate. The sniper predator had no heavy weapons, the close combat one no long range etc. etc.

My issue is that this game was supposedly a revamp of the series and it's nothing like it at all.

Considering they made them so damn well before it makes no sense to make this into yet another typical console shooter.
You're right, I didn't play the old games, and I wasn't aware they had different classes within each species - that sounds like the best compromise in team gaming.

As for the equiping thing, I'm pretty sure the D-pad is used for switching between the predator's secondary weapons, that's how it's stated on the 'controls' menu, anyway. I've never actually had a second weapon to switch to, though, so I don't know if that's just an issue with the demo or if you genuinely cannot switch between weapons.

there are different skins so maybe its just deathmatch thats like this after all its no point being specialised in a free for all match

For those new to the demo, I made a quick video of one game I had as a Marine. With the annotations I wrote a few tips and tricks on how to survive longer on the battlefield, along a few notes pointing out some cool details.

Definately worth downloading, if you hear anybody saying there are problems with balance, they may be right, but not from what i've seen (a lot considering i've played it for at least 2 hours a day since it was released) i see a predator win the match just as often as an alien or a marine, and while at first it will take some getting used to, you can eventually wipe out everything you see without just repeating the same attack over and over again.

The thing i like best is how it seems to reward you for playing the species how they are shown in the movies; predators should be stealthy and go for close range kills as much as possible, Aliens should stick to walls and ceilings staying out of sight and marines should need fifty changes of underwear.

Many people might disagree but seriously the game is so much more fun if you stick to your respective species' traits.
