I won't be praying. I'll be wishing Allison luck and hope that the surgeons (you know, the guys who actually do the work), have no complications.

Okay, I guess it is a nice sentiment or whatever, but seriously, I'm with Daystar Clarion on this.

I'm an athiest, so I will not be praying. But just saying, you are kind of imposing by only puttting one poll option. Still, really hope she gets better

Why is there only one option in this poll?
I imagine this might confuse some people, but this thread is meant more as a gathering point for people who wish to join the endeavour, rather than as a place to argue over religious philosophies. The option is just to indicate your participation.
The post was rather difficult to write. I'm sorry if I wasn't able to convey its meaning properly.
Conveying meaning is difficult through this medium. With your topic being that of a subject commonly debated in this medium does not help, with the internet being the internet...

Mate, with all due respect, I don't think anybody here is arguing over religious beliefs. I see a lot of well wishers and people think you should use your time more constructively. Allison will be fine, but i suggest you all get together and raise some money for starving kids or the homeless. Help your community first; Internet entertainers second.

research studies these days are beginning to show results that suggest praying for clinical patients actually sustantially improves their health.
Citation needed.

That's probably if they pray themselves and if they believe in prayer themselves. Belief is a powerful thing. And if you want to believe in something in this case, have faith in the skills of her surgeons. They're the ones that deserve praise, support and cheering for this. I would've send money for her cause if I could've as well.

Get well soon Allison!
I too would like to see links to these studies.

OT: I'm agnostic, o I wont really be praying. That being said I give her and her surgeons my best. Here's to Allison's swift recovery and to those who donated to her cause!

EDIT: Given the nature of this post, I think you should have it moved to the Religion and Politics Forum.

She'll have my thoughts on that day, although I don't pray since I'm not religious.
It's weird to have a "poll" with only one option, though, are you using it as some kind of registration form? Because if you are, it would probably be more useful if people also say who they are?

Either way, I'm not sure you need to schedule specific times and stuff, but I don't see the harm in that either.

Why are you putting umlauts on the i in atheist?

As for my thoughts on this, I think you'd be just as effective if you wrote a letter to Santa for her to get better.

Not to pick a fight, but they don't. The biggest one done: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/31/health/31pray.html
It revealed that there was no difference. The ones who knew that they were being prayed for actually did worse.
Citation needed.
OP: I wish her good luck and I hope she has a speedy recovery.

I can say that prayer is the least of her worries.

Nonetheless, I wish her good luck.

I'll say a prayer for her. I'm agnostic so the way I see it there's 3 options:

- God exists and he/she/it is good. In which case he'll appreciate my prayer and forgive me for my lack of faith.
- God does not exist. In which case I spend a small amount of my time thinking about another human being and showing compassion.
- God exists and he/she/it isn't good. In which case I'm screwed whether I pray or not. Allison may or may not be screwed whether I pray or not.

So whatever the truth is me praying is either a good thing or an irrelevant thing. It can never be a bad thing.

I'll help too. (I'm a foundationalist, so it's cool, actually pretty much everything is.)

It might have just been better to ask folks to keep positive emotions and thoughts in their hearts and minds about Allison while she's going through this. My own prayers will feature her chasing an amalgom of pain with a penicl proportional in size to the amount of support she has gotten from her friends here at the Escapist. So yeah a really big pencil....

It should go without saying, but yes, I believe it is also helpful to keep these thoughts and feelings with you about all the other things you would like to see get better.

I've stated before how this thread wasn't intended as a place for theological discussion, but negating that, your post I simply love. It pretty much contains in a nutshell exactly how I intended make this group accessible to atheists in the first place. Very well put.
Thanks for your support, I like the mindset you're providing to this cause. :)

can i still pray if i believe in the invisible pink unicorn? because the Christians around me keep insisting that it's not a real religion and i just want to make fun of them.

I'll probably forget, but I'll pray for her in my personal morning and night prayers up until that point.

Thanks for the support. I'm sure she'd love the way you put your thoughts the way you did. It made me laugh anyway. :D
And yes, having phrased things differently from the beginning might not have opened the whole religious discussion can of worms I tried to get away from by posting outside of Religion and Politics. But at least adding the more atheist-friendly option seems to have contained the damage somewhat.

No hatred yet? O_O

I'll be praying for her myself, and all the money we've raised probably points to a good ending in all of this. :D
You know, not all of us are trolls that feed on the hatred of other people... Only most of us...

And since I am a atheist myself then I won't prey but I wish her very luck, she is a damn good artist and it would be very sad see such talent go waste.
