Wait, what? People wake up from a coma and get fucking charged?

As for your actual point, I can see where you're coming from. I don't know if I'd side with you if it came up, but I can see your point.
He's an American, we don't have free health care over here and someone needs to pay to keep the hooked up to life support >_>
What happens if they're in a coma for 20 years and no one pays?
They pay monthly, not when you wake up I believe and if no one can pay, then they take them off life-support I would imagine or come to some kind of deal with the Insurance company or the victim's family. Needless to say, its a flawed system.
So if you have no family or friends, and no insurance, the hospital takes you off of life support?

That can't be what happens!

Everyones a bad person in at least one way. If they arent, RNG inevitably deals them the Death Card and status quo will resume.

OT: You were right in thinking, but even I know when to not comment out loud.

EDIT: This could go on the Darwin Awards... if i had a reliable news source.

The truth hurts...

And what you said is true, however hurtful it is... I've lost more than my fair share of friends to drunk drivers so I have little if any sympathy for them...

...not sure if I would have said that to their friend though...

Two friends of mine were killed and one was put in a coma by a drunk driver (he later entered a huge depression after nearly dying from the shock). They hadn't been drinking and stopped at the light. He came, didn't stop and hit hard.

I have no sympathy for them. If they were stupid enough to get to the wheel instead of taking a cab (like a responsibile person) then they had it coming, big time.

If you show no signs of improving and they can't find any legal way to pay for your life-support, then ya, that's what they do. Thankfully, I don't believe it happens often.

You underestimate the cruelty of the American healthcare system.

Why the hell would you pay for THEIR stupidity? It's like trying to fight Darwin by throwing chalk at him.

No, you're perfectly right and snce you have freedom of opinion, no one should be able to say that your views are wrong just because they're harsh.

What the fuck? How does anyone even condone that, let alone allow it to go ahead?

So this Tuesday 3 girls went drunk driving at 11 AM and crashed. 1 died 2 are in a coma. One of there friends came around asking for a donation to help pay there medical bills. I declined and said if theyre dumb enough to go drunk driving at 11 in the morning on a snowday when the roads are bad then they can face the consequence and pay for it themselves. I got a lot of dirty looks and i was told i was being selfish. Does this mean im a jerk or would you have done the same?
Depends on what kind of friends they were. Friends i can forgive even stupidity, acquaintances - not so much.

But if you're asking this question that already makes you a good person overall.

I think you have a good point.
However, a "No, sorry." would have been enough of an answer, I suppose. Stay respectful, even towards dumb people.

Assuming you didn't know the girls, you may be right but don't say it out loud. As much as it was their own fault, loss of life is never pleasant. To her, her friends death comes first, the hows and whys come second, understandably, it's a touchy subject. Nobody can force you into charity, you donate to whatever you want for whatever reasons you have, but you don't have to go insult her friend. Whether or not it's actually an insult doesn't matter, you should have understood that she would have taken it that way.

I'm not your moral compass though, if you felt you did right then don't worry about it.

I would probably have said more or less the same thing.
Can't really judge if that makes you a bad person, I have my confirmed dickish moments.

Honestly, having lost family to drunk drivers, I refuse to have sympathy to those who get hurt because they were stupid enough to drink and drive themselves. Not only were the three putting their lives at risk, but they were putting others on the line as well. It just seems lucky they didn't hit someone else and kill them.

So no, you weren't wrong in saying that. I would have done the same. Yea, things may be horrible for them and their families, and that's sad. I don't mean to say that it's a good thing they're in the position they are. But it's their own fault over anyone else's, and I don't see why others should pay for their mistake. As well, I have to wonder if anyone would care if it wasn't three girls, but instead three older men that had been out drinking.

By that point, you're basically brain dead. Some people actually have it in their will not to be placed on life-support and some actually have do not resuscitate orders. And its condoned mainly because the Hospital doesn't run for free. If you allow them to stay on life-support, then you have to make cuts to pay for it. Doctors lose their jobs, maintenance on machines ends up falling apart, less patients can be taken, etc etc. Keeping that one person for free would end up costing everyone, even the people who are meant to treat him. Like I said, if you don't show signs of improvement, then they call it.

No one likes it, I don't, the doctors don't and the governors don't, but at that point, you can't do all that much except do what those girls are currently doing.
