Basically my school has a strict uniform policy which stretches to no ear rings, buttons done up and shoelaces tied. Another rule is no headphones o display, but i always leave them out from force of habit.

Today one of the douchey-est teachers in the entire school decided he was going to pick on me out of the entire class because i had my headphones out. I was sitting there silently doing my work while the rest of the class was shouting and generally being dickheads (yeah i hate everyone in my class thats why i was quiet, plus im a bit of a nerd.)

He bounced towards me demanding that i put away my headphones, i looked at him and said calmly to him that i dont see the point because my ipod is off and im not using them.
He gave me the evilest look ever and claimed that i was being disrespectful and and told me he was confiscating my ipod, this is when i actually became disrespectful because he no longer deserved my respect and flat out refused to give him my ipod.

After this he reported me to the headmaster (after grabbing my collar and pushing me outside the room [this is legal btw i checked]) and now i have a detention every night for the next week and a half.

Even though i know the rules i still think i was in the right as it was an unfaur rule so i'd just like some confirmation or correction from the awesome people of the escapist plz.

Teachers should earn respect, not assume they have it. Being an asshole does not give you respect. Sometimes, you have to break rules, even for small things.
Any system which keeps students in line by scaring them to obey is wrong. In short, you were right.

You were not in the right to disrespect him. When he asked you to put them away, you should have. Period.

You had your headphones out, which is forbidden by the rules. He told you to put them away, you refused, and are now paying the consequences of your actions. Yes the rule is rather stupid, but you still broke it. So no, your not in the right.

This was not one of those times.

The rule is a bit silly, but it's harmless. There's NO REASON for you to break it. Thus, I can't support anyone breaking it.

Ok, quick lesson about life. Rules may be unjust and illogical, but do not break them unless you have to. Makes things easier for everyone. You were in the right, but notice how you still got in trouble anyway.

Also, for some reason I totally pictured your teacher as Mr. Marooka aka King Moron. Pretty weird.

I have to agree. It is a silly rule but if you had simply put them away when you were asked there wouldn't have been a problem; if you wanted to debate the issue it should have been after putting them away, although if you don't like the guy I'm not sure what you hoped to get our of debating the point with him.

The rules were laid out, they are not unreasonable, you should have obeyed them.

The rules are designed at presenting an image of the school that encourages hard work, paying attention and having smart attire.
These rules are designed to make sure pupils pay attention, be ready for working and to make them look presentable to members of the public.
Furthermore - school rules in general are there to teach discipline that will come in handy in later life. This justifies even the most arbitrary of rules, which is a category the rules you opposed are not included in.

You are not some sort of freedom fighter opposing oppression you are just acting like a spoiled kid.

Sorry.

OT: I would like to know what kind of school this is, but in general, you were in the right.

I think you may have found a better, less petty way to show how dumb the rules are, but I guess you have to start somewhere.

Well since its not exactly the biggest ask ever to put your headphones away why bother to challenge it? You said it yourself they're strict on uniform.

If you ask me you're lucky you're actually allowed ipods in school. We would have had them confiscated and not given back til our parents went in to get them as with mobiles and any other electron device. I wouldn't be abusing this liberty or you'll loose it all together.

While it sounds like I would hate everything that school stands for, (any place with a 'headmaster' can cheerfully go to hell) you did repay douchiness with more douchiness. The rule is there to destroy individualism, which is criminal. You need to pick your battles a little better.

So... Just buy the school when you're a rich man and burn it down to spite them.

Perhaps the teacher thought you were being condescending. To be honest if I was in that situation in my school days I would have put them away, especially if you knew that the teacher was a bit of a dick.

Although I agree with your argument that there's no real logic behind the rule, other than headphones conflicting with the general student aesthetic your school wishes to display, openly disobeying the rule is rather pointless. So, in my opinion, you should just put your headphones away in the future. I have a feeling it would make your life a lot easier.

I had teachers who disliked that I wore my headphones around my neck when I was in Secondary school. but it was usually because of tests.
defying trivial rules is not worth being right over. It is all about picking your battles.

You're kinda in both, you knew your school's dress code, and ignored it and bought headphones anyway, but at the same time you weren't using them. I guess they thought you would be using them later, so I guess it was okay for them to do it.

You broke a rule and were disrespectful to a teacher. You got what you deserved. The law is the law

It may be stupid, but God help you if you break it.

A better response would have been "Oh, I'm sorry. Here, let me put them away. It won't happen again".

EDIT:
