Most of the time, if the options there to be a good guy I'll try to be a good guy. But I'd be lying if I said I never just went on a killing spree just for it's own sake.
One time in Oblivion I spent like half an hour trying to see if I could kill literally everyone in Bravil, there were like three people left when I was done.

Meh IMO being evil is just more fun in most games, I found mass effect (to a point that is some of those Renegade interrupts are just... wow), the fallout franchise, Infamous, ect. although I almost always have a soft spot for my subordinates/followers in RPGs. The big exception to my "evil is fun and profitable" rule is Bioshock, I have never killed a little sister even though when I first started I was expecting to go "fuck morality, gimme magic powers" especially considering I hate children, but once I actually ran into one I could not bring myself to kill her.

I usually pick the choice that is closest to the choice I would pick being in presented situation. This usually means being sarcastic prick that likes to watch the world burn (those are also usually more reasonable options and I like reason). So if the dialog options lets me, I'm a sarcastic prick and if the choice system is between black and white eg. helping granny pass the street or burn an orphanage, I will burn the orphanage and with a smile on my face. Unless it involves animals other than people. I'm extra nice to such animals. I was playing Arcanum like this and I had to save the game before each conversation because they often ended in me fighting half of the city. But that wasn't my fault. The NPCs attacked me first (usually single NPC barehanded against few armored foes and they still thought they could take me on, retards) because they weren't nice and in response I wasn't nice to them.

Ofcourse that doesn't mean I won't do good things (like quests for good). In Fallout 3 for example, the first two things I did was blowing up the Megaton and letting ghouls kill the residents of the hotel (or whatever it was) and throughout whole game I've been stealing every possible thing yet I still somehow ended up with highest possible karma (I don't know how did that happen).

And if I really really like some characters, I might still be a prick to them in dialogs but I would never do something bad to them. Eg. in The Devil on G-string Visual Novel, there is no way in hell I would pick up the choices for Mizuha's bad end. Not even at a gunpoint.

If I really like the game, then I will play it again with different choices. Otherwise I will just see videos on youtube.

I also don't believe in universal good and evil.

Because being evil in a video game = bad guy irl, amirite?

I've always found those that genuinely feel that being mean to anyone in a video game makes them bad to be to be utterly infuriating.

the vast majority of people picks the good options, saves and goes on rampages without saving.
i just think people who like being the bad guy are more vocal on forums and such.
personally i pick the bad guys for two reasons: usually it's more interesting and in the real world i am really nice with helping people and such so when i play games i like to murder old ladies for catharsis.

and welcome

two things regarding that: you are NEVER the only one and stay out of the basement

People didn't save the Little sisters in Bioshock? Literally everyone I know* did.

*On their first run of course.

Either way "being good" can be debated. Even though the path is labeled evil. Doesn't mean it is. It's the problem with alignment 's in video games. Everything is Black and white.

Games are escapism.
They let you do shit you can't/wouldn't/shouldn't do in real life.

I can't stand playing the bad guy either.

Don't like killing civilians in Skyrim.
Don't like choices where both options are "evil" (Dragon Age 2's mages vs. templars both sides are complete dicks, so the game forces you to murder half the city)

I have determined there is duality in life and while one can maintain a moral outlook, one can certainly still hold that dichotomy of dark/light... In otherwords, in games I can be a bastard or a nice guy depending on my mood. In life I tend to be a nice guy until I find certain walls that can't be broken down without being a total bastard.

I really hate the arbitrary morality systems they have in games, theyt tend to deviate from what I'd consider to be the good options, that sdaid I tend towards the good options, simply because being evil rarely has as much in the way of in-game rewards.
The only time I experienced that was in Fable 3, but boy was that warped.

Short term fun and games? Good! Tightening our belts to deal with the oncoming threats? Bad!

Apparently Fable 3's story was written by a five year old who wasn't allowed a tonka toy that one time.

I'll put it this way:

If I can pacifist run a game, I will go out of my way to do it... mostly because killing dudes when it can be avoided makes me feel bad.

I'm morally whiter than many, many people.

Welcome to the website new friend!

OT: Well it really depends. My brother and I always assign roles, he will take all the positive decisions in a game, and I will take all the negative decisions to balance out and compare the endings (Which is how I have both Fable III endings). But lately there have been moments where I choose more positive choices. Like in ME3, it was hard to do stuff like:

Kill Mordin Solus

Otherwise I'll take all the evil choices.

I'm not gonna lie; I do enjoy being evil in games. I mean, becoming Dark Lord of the Sith in the original KOTOR was one of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had in my life. But I'll admit, even I have my limits. Like in ME3, where in the past two games I had thoroughly enjoyed playing a renegade character, there were some ruthless decisions concerning characters I liked
(Betraying Wrex with the fake Genophage cure, siding with the zenophobic Quarians against Legion and the Geth, who I'd already taken measures to make peaceful in the first place)
that I just couldn't be the dick because it would make no fucking sense for the character. I don't know what it is about the escape of video games that brings out my dark side; I guess I just like exploring it in an environment where I'm not really hurting anybody and get to try mindless indulgence for a change. Being good is too boring; it's too...me.

Nope, I'm the same way. I have 3 different games on fallout 3 and all three end up "last, best hope of mankind". In video games I tend to do what I would do in real life, as myself.

Oh, and....

I've always heard/read that the vast majority of people choose the good options.
^ And I confirm that I'm always almost playing the goody in rpgs and appropriate genres.

Although granted, when I play games like Evil genius or Dungeon master, those would be the exceptions as main point in those games is to be comically evil :p

When it comes to Bioshock 2, I always save the first 4 and harvest the rest. This actually gets you 80 more ADAM than a pure harvester if you also gather twice with each sister.

Morals are for chumps!

I much prefer evil characters/options. It makes me sad we dont get more games where you can be the out and out badguy.
Yeah, I only use morality as a tiebreaker when making decisions. ;D

Well, welcome to the Escapist. Yah you, hope you get used to the site, and enjoy its content.

As for the morality thing, most of the time, the evil-option is completely irrational, and stupid. So, I try to do the things that fit me. Ie, I'll save a little girl's cat out of a tree, and help the small boy get his money from the bullies, but not a middle-aged prostitute man rake in more customers.

In other words, I try to be as nice as possible in games without my character seeming creepy and scaring off all the quest-givers. Being comically evil has always made me feel bitter towards my characters. I played a good-character and bad-character in New Vegas. Some of the Evil dialouge options were rather silly, and how the tribes simply forgive you after the kill 1/3 of their members, piss on their corpses then teabag just seems silly.

And I honestly dislike it whenever morality choices or paths are labeled "Good" or "Bad" or "Kinda Goodie" or "Dispicable Innocent Child", or shit like that. No good or evil, or Renegade of Paragon. 'Cause, really, you shouldn't know anyone who's a massive angel or a gargantuan dickhead. That's just immersion-breaking for me.

Heres a hint ITS A GAME. Morals mean nothing because the people in it are sprites, not real so who cares.
