They have less classes than in Diablo II and they aren't exactly that good? In Diablo II I played as either a Druid or Necromancer because they could pretty much raise armies of Spirits / Skeletons and other stuff so it helped me out because face it: A lot of stuff in Diablo II was difficult up close. I don't know how I would've beaten Blood Raven if it weren't for my skeleton army. There were too many things around her and she ran away whenever you got close to her. Melee was really hard for me. And using Bows or Crossbows wasn't very easy for me. They have ONE class where you can summon, but the summoning doesn't come until later on. Having a true Summoning class is very important. It gives people who aren't that skilled at melee, magic, or long distance attacking a very good advantage. I kind of feel just cut out of Diablo III's plan here.

What are your thoughts?

It seems like you are going off the assumption that Diablo 3 will be balanced in the same way as Diablo 2. Given that Diablo 3 has different classes and is a new game built from the ground up, this is a very silly assumption, as most assumptions usually are. After all, you know what they say about what assuming makes out of you and me.

No one has seen the full spell tree of the Witch Doctor yet so it's FAR too early to be saying anything like this.

Well, from my point of view, this allows you to get better at those classes that you weren't very good with. Instead of sticking with a known playstyle, it is forcing you to adapt and learn a new one.

Thats a plus in my mind.

I was good with any and every class in D2, my best being my Sword/Shield Barbarian.

Druids were added in the expansion, however. I'm sure they'll get around to it. Thing is, though, I've already played Diablo 3. It's called Torchlight.

I checked around with the Witch Doctor and it just doesn't come off as a true summoning class. And I'm sure that D3 won't be balanced like D2. But in my opinion, Summoning classes are very important. And they worked well. What works well should stay. That's all I'm saying.

Speaking of which, do you recommend that game? I watched Yahtzee's review on it and the game still kind of interests me.

What Mark said... but think about this...

Who's to say they won't add such a class in the expansion they will eventually release?

Also, the main "summoner" in this game is the Witch Doctor. As you stated, the Necromancer was a class that involved summoning a small number of creatures and using bones and other body parts as weapons/walls/etc. In D3, the Witch Doctor summons minions and uses their powers over nature and disease in much the same way as the necromancer uses body parts to that effect. Something you've failed to mention though is that the Witch Doctor's summoning skill has only been shown to the length of summoning the dog minions from the videos. In fact, EVERY class has only shown a limited number of skills (5-8 per class). I very much doubt that those skills are all that each class will have. That being the case, we can safely assume that the Witch Doctor will have many other being they can summon as they level up.

To sum up, the Witch Doctor IS this game's main summoning class.

On that note:
Demon Hunter = Amazon
Barbarian = Barbarian (duh?)
Wizard = Sorceress
Monk = Paladin (only MUCH better)

Who knows what they'll add for the expansion...

EDIT: Personally, I couldn't get into "summoning" classes. Sure, it's nice to have a handful of weaker critters run around attacking everything, but when you do massively powerful AoE (area of effect) attacks like what the Assassin could do, it really didn't matter as you just needed to bunch everything together and then blow the caca out of them

It's not bad. With all the mods you can get for it, it can get pretty expansive. Not much customization on looks, but it certainly relieves tension and is buildable as with Diablo.

I see. I'll have to look into getting it.

I tried the Assassin Class but I really couldn't get into it. I don't know what it is, but I don't like being surrounded by a lot of things wanting to use my bones as toothpicks. So that's why I use Summons to clear everything out. Summons can deal with smaller things while letting you focus on the bigger things. And from what I've seen from the Final Boss Battle in Diablo II, It's best to have massive armies to do your bidding while you try not to get killed.

Personally I hate summoning classes in action-RPG games, being able to take out the army of demons with your character alone is much more fun that summoning your own army to deal with it for you. When Diablo 3 comes out (Or if I get into the beta) I'm going to roll out a barbarian first and see how that goes.

Also: Witch Doctor looks like he does a lot of summoning, there you go.

I dunno. I'm kind of into sitting back and letting things roll out. Using Summons can take care of little annoyances for me. And they help for when you're low on health and everything is after you. I used a melee class in D1 because there wasn't much to work with.

With what they're showcasing for the Witch Doctor on the website, it doesn't look like he's too built for summoning.

You're counting the expansion, the basic Diablo 2 had 5 classes as well. Barbarian, Paladin, Necromancer, Sorceress, and... umm... I forget. Pretty sure there were 5, but only those four spring to mind right now. Wait, I remember, the Amazon! Kept confusing her with the rogue from Diablo 1, but yeah, 5 classes. Whereas right now Diablo 3 has Barbarian (Again, same guy too!), Witch Doctor, Demon Hunter, Monk & Wizard.

Even. I'll probably play a Wizard, I wanna see how they let you customize your spells and I've always been a sucker for magic missile.

ANYWAY, this is Blizzard we're talking about here, the proverbial kings of expansions. It's inevitable Diablo 3 will receive an expansion as well and there's absolutely no question it will involve new classes so don't worry. Who's to say they wont bring back another fan favourite like the Necromancer? I wouldn't write it off.

The Assassin class was basically a duel-wielder who used poisons and explosives to cut down larger amounts of foes in seconds. Unlike the barbarian who just wades into battle swinging whatever is equipped, the assassin uses claw-type weapons. These are some of the fastest weapons in the game so you can strike many more times than other characters can. Not only that but she gains not only defence from Agility, but also attack. The higher your agility, the more powerful your attacks become. Combine this with the ability to poison your weapons, throw high-explosive grenades and set traps that shoot bolts of lightning (among other things) and you have some serious crowd control.
To be honest, it's all personal opinion. I don't like summoning classes because it means having to keep watch on your mana and constantly summoning things when I can just rush headlong into battle and cut everything to ribbons. If you're constantly getting minions to do your work, you're not powering up your character enough. If your character is weak when the enemy gets past your minions, your screwed.

So Diablo 3 will only have 3 classes? Eh, makes sense to me.

Very true... I think Barbarian is just Blizzard's Favorite Class because he seems to be in every Diablo.... I think he was in D1.
