WOO! REPLY NUMBER 100... ah shit...
But in relation to your topic, I never swore until I was about 11, then I started, and I do swear when its in humor, or necessary. I don't swear just randomly like some 5 year old trying to sound older.

I had this one explained by some shrinks once... they weren't my therapists for that matters, just their occupations, my friend just happen to be one. We got into a discussion at dinner, about how people emote. Here's the basics of what they agreed on:
Swearwords are forbidden when you're growing up. You hear them all the time through the media/school/friends but as soon as you said them in front of your parents or other grown ups you got a slap on the wrist or a long boring lecture on how those words are "bad", "evil" or in some way just not right to say...
This makes them very interesting, like cigarettes or alcohol, you're not allowed to use them and you of course wonder why. Then you grow up and all of a sudden you feel like your parents cannot tell you what to do and what not. Swearing makes you feel in control because your "mean mother" who "never loved you" (or whatever) is not able to control you using those "forbidden words".
In a way it's the rebellion against your parents (or authorities), while for some people this is just a phase until they finally grow up themselves, others will continue to use them to feel "bad-ass" and in control.
In the end it all comes down to personal preference how you use (and react to) swearwords. While most shrinks agree that people who curse excessively are very insecure, a little swear once in a while doesn't mean that you are a emotional wreck. While I personally feel that swearing is pretty pathetic, I myself am not able to bring some of my points across without a little bitching!

Im freakin 19 years old and I still say heck, crap and such. If someone ask's me what another person said, I automatically modify the swear words if there were any.
I am completely desensitized to it, me being on the internet and all, but I cant say them Sure I think the f-word and everything else in my head when someone comes in my line at work but doesn't know what they want to order, but I've never said any. I think I've only typed out Damn <5 times my whole life.
I've recently made myself say '*****' and 'ass' out loud to myself as those are terms and Im being nitpickey about those.
Anyone else like this or know someone like this, or am I the only one on the internet?
I swear all the time. It's a lower-class Australian thing, it's just how we communicate. I notice when I see people from other countries that they swear very rarely compared to us. I really notice it with Americans - there's so much swearing in their movies but I'm yet to meet one who actually swears a lot in real life.

Yes but only around certain people who I know will be comfortable with me swearing. So friends from childhood, work colleagues who also swear, these people I feel comfortable to use the odd swear word.

The one who swears is the one with a small vocabulary

I prefer to use more "sophisticated" language, rather than sounding like your average uneducated fool with a volcabulary consisting of a handful of words.

Stephen fry would disagree with you. And Stephen Fry is always right.

Personally, I think I could probably cut down on the swearing, but it's not a big thing for me or any of my friends or workmates, or even my uni lecturers haha. I occasionally swear around family, but nothing too coarse, and not too often :p

I don't: religious reasons and ones of taste, manners and general politeness.

Ah, you misunderstand me. Perhaps I could have worded it better. I have absolutely no problem with people that are creative with their swearing, and mix things up a bit. As I said, I don't believe in "dirty words", so it's not like I have any moral reason not to swear. What I do have a problem with is the kind of people that like to insert the word "fuck" in between every few words, whether it makes sense or not. It dilutes the word, and really just makes swearing less effective. I'm not saying that people who swear a lot necessarily have a poor volcabulary. I'm saying the people who constantly swear with the same handful of words have a poor volcabulary. I'm talking about your stereotypical 10-year old X-box live player, the only swearwords they seem to know being "fag", "douche" and "cocksucker". Surely you can't say that doesn't show a poor volcabulary.

And of course I agree with Stephen Fry.

Ahh, I understand your point now. Yeah, I do agree, excessive swearing for it's own sake is not a desirable habit to get into, and I must admit I'm guilty of it myself sometimes. I dont just restrict myself to a few expletives though, so at least my swearing is varied :D

I swear all the time, for no apparent reason. Especially in Russian.

Swearing is good for me, since it lets me release all the shit inside me, making me feel better (by shit I mean negativity).
