Hasn't this been tried on Warcaft 3's online community? With the program called wc3banlist :p There is one "official banlist" for each realm (there aren't many, and they're based on your location, Europe has one realm for an example), and only a select few people can add people to this list, people who have proven that they won't abuse it or someting. And there are a few major "private" banlists which people usually adds to their program since the people who maintain these are well known as well. And then everyone has their own local banlist on top of that, which keeps track of all the people you've personally banned, and as such you can avoid playing with these people again.

If the point is to punish the banned people the banlist doesn't really do much, but if the point is to never play with that particular douchebag again, it works pretty well. You'd be surprised to see how often I got use for my local banlist actually.

Now I barely play wc3 anymore, so I have no idea if the banlist is still in use. But it was a helpful tool, and I'm sure it could be successfully applied to other online games as well.

Nah, it would get abused. Like, I never use mics online, yet I have bad reputation for aggressive communication and swearing. Uh huh.

In theory, it's a good idea. In practice, we already have the Reputation system. If you don't like someone, give them a 1* review. If you see someone with less than 3* then don't play with them.

Besides, people would just spam-report people they don't like, rather than people who were actually rude. And, the rude people would be more likely to group together anyways.

I realize you just resolved the thread with your post a few minutes ago, but I feel the need to mention that as long as they aren't teamkilling or directly impeding my ability to play the game, the mic-spamming homophobic assholes and the abuse thereof is half the fun in online gaming.

Bad personalities are unavoidable, but luckily you can elect to ignore them using mute. cheaters though are the big issue, they flat-out ruin games. A good example of this would be a speedhacker on a Team Fortress 2 capture point map, it just ruins everything.

I'd rather have some arsehole who says 'fag' too much than someone who ruins the actual game.

I may have used a poor choice in words there. What I meant by profane was racial slurs and homophobic content. I have no problem with expletives in online games. They're just words whose meanings are given weight by the reciever. I more just want a nicer, more friendly gaming enviroment.
My bad then.

Still doesn't seem like a practical idea to be honest... People can't even be nice to each other in real life, when they have nothing to lose and everything to gain from it...let alone in a game.

There is an easy way to deal with them. It will teach them a lesson without effecting anything they paid for. Make them game in silence. Somebody getting on your nerves? Mute them. Somebody being a racist jerk? Block communications with them. If a racist ass makes a slur and everyone has him muted does he make a sound?

No, because if I'm having a bad day/get bored, I can become a "rude online gamer", too. I don't want to be blacklisted because I threw smoke grenades in front of idiot snipers making my team lose.

Like everyone else has said: it will be abused. Any great human innovation, no matter how many people may use it properly, will be abused by someone. Although I think that in the case of online gaming, far more people will abuse it rather than use it properly. I can see an instance where one player is slaughtering another player and the palyer that is getting slaughtered will blacklist the player who is mudering them just because they are far too good. Online play is, for the most part, a monkey house full of immature shouty children and morons who love to shout racsist and homophobic epithets at everyone. Do you really think that those kinds of people will use a blacklisting system properly? I don't think so.

Note: I am not taking any pot shots at anyone here, just the idiots that like to ruin online play in general. I know that none of the members fo the Escapist are like that because we all have higher standards.

i have a different plan of creating a polite online enviroment for games and forums:

a device that allows every user to apply painfull electric shocks to any other participant in the round/discussion over standart tcp/ip.

no, no, seriously! think about it! you see, why most people act relatively polite in real life is because of the imminent danger of getting punched in the face if they dick arround too much. now if there was the possibility of physical punishment for being an asshole on the internet, people would all of the sudden think twice before saying something and starting an argument. the danger of abuse is extremely low, because, as in real life, you can assume that there will be retaliation.

the thought of an ensuing shock-party would keep dickheads from doing dickish stuff just as much as the thought of provoking a brawl would in real life.

I'm not on a console - but the idea seems pretty good. Even if it can't help with Xbox Live, it would work nicely with Steam.
You're kidding right?
Blacklisting servers on TF2 is bugged...
You can't right click and select "Add to blacklist"
It never fucking works.
The idea is still good though ad their intention was good.
This is a problem with the game not the idea...
It doesn't release when I want to remove something from server history OR adding servers to favourites so I blame valves half hearted work...

Some rude gamers can add to the fun. I love hearing someone cuss me off after capping him for the fifth or sixth time. Gives me a little giggly gleeful feeling.
I know doesnt it just. This is multiplied by a factor of 20 if they are iether, under 12 or have a funny accent/ dialect. Theres nothing better than hearing a whiney voice say:

"Oh my god you camper you cant kill me you cheated (whine whine whine"

Sweet victory.

On topic i think the current system is fine, this one seems very high maintencance both by me and the site. I have to check every game for every black listed player? Unless it integrates with the matchmaking system its going to be very difficult to enforce. Also abuse. Been said before.

U could always mute if they are that annoying, and not let the fact that they are douches bother you. And if it gets to a point where actions affect gameplay of you and the team/others, then just report them. It does work although not instantaneous. I can't be bothered with a blacklist of people i should be looking out for so i don't play with them. I just wanna playing the freakin game.

Shock Therapy

And now for the science bit, the headset is programmed to recognize certain swear words and general put-downs (noob, nubbin, nub, nooblet etc) or even when the vocalist is shouting in a negative manner.

Upon receiving either a cuss, put-down or yell, the headset administers a small electrical shock straight into the ear canal, thus making the user want to avoid using such words.

To ensure that people don't just choose another headset you have two options, limit the hardware so that voice chat will only work with the shock giving headset or put the shock technology into all headsets.

This would do one of three things

1 Stop people using foul language or shouting indiscriminately.

2 Stop people using voice chat altogether

3 be responsible for the deafness/death of some of the worst mannered players

Whichever way you look at it it's win-win.
