I love to start off as the agile fighter (I'm thinking that's a speed and strength combo). But the nature of the game makes it so you're a jack of all trades by a certain point. I kind of wish it wasn't like that.
I actually understand what you mean by that, and I agree. This is exactly why I said what do you prefer. :p
Cool. On my playthrough right now, I'm an Altmer (though I usually go Redguard). I'm a hand-to-hand specialist (definitely my favorite melee style) with lots of speed, strength, endurance, and personality for some illusion spells. I'm a light armor specialist but actually have spent most of the time wearing clothing enchanted with shielding (I just like the way it looks). So I'm kind of a hybrid but mostly an agile warrior. I named the custom class "Self-Made Man".

I'm more of a magic character. There is nothing more satisfying than using a custom powerful lightning spell and using it on a character and seeing their body fly against the wall at 60 MPH.

Sneaky guy: Max out on stealth, get that ring of concealment (from one of those shrine quests), and buy the invisibility spell from the Dark Brotherhood. After that, it's a cinch to avoid random fights, meaning you can save your strength for those "boss" battles that can't be skipped (I'm looking at you, elven dude who stole the ruby necklace macguffin!)

Playing a thief is the funniest way to play imho. Also, i favor bows and avoid magic like the plague..
.. but since the game is so badly balanced in every way imaginable its not effective at all.

Depends. One of my funnest playthroughs was with an unarmed/unarmored monk with ridiculous acrobatics and speed. I chased down deer and beat them to death for fun. I jumped up and punched deadra out in one shot for giggles. And he was really old for the kicker.

Go Kung-Fu Grandpa!

You guys have no idea how shocked I am that not a single soul has chosen Melee/Bow! My brother always uses that combination, and it is a very good one, so I figured I would have quite a few!
That's what I use! Attack from long range, then if they get closer switch to my blade.

Have to agree with crimson5pheonix the most fun i ever had playing oblivion, and i played it a lot, was when i made a character that fought with fists, there's just something about it that makes you feel really badass.

I usually go with fighter of some sort, but I recently made a mage. Like, a legit mage who wakes up and fireballs his coffee to get it warm. It's also the first time I'm dabbling in alchemy. It goes without a doubt that this guy is my favorite.

One time, I was playing my thief and my friend walks into the room.
"What kind of character is he?"
"Thief" I retort
Just at that moment, I pass a guard and he says, "You have my ear, citizen"
"Man," my friend says, "you're a good thief."
Goooood times

Always go for a sneaky bastard with Illusion thrown in. No matter how good of a sneak you are, being invisible makes you better =D

Combination sneak, restoration/melee. I tend to dabble in summoning as well for distractions early game.
