Let's see here TV On The Radio, Tom Waits, Johnny Flynn, Beirut, Ben Lee, Grizzly Bear, Phoenix, Regina Spektor, The Sounds, Fleet Foxes, Q and not U, and Wolf Parade.
Pretty much anything that is specifically 'individual' is indie, technically. As soon as an indie band signs up with a record label they are no longer indie, they are technically rock or pop or electro or whatever genre they play. The same applies for films, writing and pretty much any sort of entertainment.
However, indie artists now generally follow a particular style, we see a lot of indie musicians out there who have their own general style that most indie artists do, and that is a pretty good style, to me. I consider myself indie with a hint of gothicness in my personality, but indie itself is just great. Anyway, all this doesn't really have a point, I just felt the need to rant a bit about what indie actually means and that I like indie in general. Which is good. But pointless. But still good.
Ahem.
Anyway, indie bands I'd reccomend? I have to say that Reverend and the Makers and The Enemy are right up there on the list, and is it a crime to say I like Scouting for Girls? Otherwise, The Pigeon Detectives (from my adopted city, no less) are pretty damn awesome. Listen to them. Reverend and the Makers, The Enemy, and The Pigeon Detectives. You can't go wrong with them

That's actually wrong, indie bands can be signed to record labels, as long as they're independent record lables. That's all indie meant back in its day, independent. An independent record label is a label that's not a subsidiary of one of the big four: EMI, Universal, Sony and Warner. The big four control about 75ish percent of the world music market and close to 90 percent of the US music market.
OP: Trying to salvage the term indie strictly as a term for independent music has been a losing battle since the double douce-decade rolled on in. Indie has been used as a word for a sound, a scene, a lifestyle and a look for a long, long time. Such a long time that it's now the proper usage of the word in most people's mind, just like the word emo no longer has anything to do with emotive hardcore. Being a purist will only make you tear your hair out, that's why all those fourfa emo-bangers are bald, accepting that the subbacultcha has been absorbed by big business is the way to go.
It's hard to give recommandations without knowing what you already like, and I'm not really into the scene anymore, but here are a few majors in the minors that I really like:
The coolest video ever made.
Then you have your bands that everyone's heard of, your indie greats if you will, like Modest Mouse, Pavement, Mission of Burma, Arcade Fire, Spoon, Wilco, Yo La Tengo, The Decemberists, Mountain Goats, Sufjan Stevens, Refused etc. etc. Good hunting.
Once again thanks for your severely disturbing concern. I accidentally put this in User Review. It was supposed to go in Off-topic discussion. Sue me. I pm'ed a mod about it and I haven't heard back and it hasn't been locked so it's clearly not a huge deal.
Psychostick from Tempe Arizona, I saw them this summer in MN, their style of 'Humorcore Metal' is very catchy. They sing about everything from working in Fast Food Joints in "Minimum Rage" to Piece of crap cars in "Two-Ton Paperweight", in to my favorite alcoholic beverage, "BEER!!" They've had a couple of hits on the radio, and are pretty much on the cusp of breaking out...
