Everybody knows metric, the killers, the shins, arcade fire, of montreal, animal collective blah blah blah. They're more common than grains of sand on the beach.

I'd like to recommend Hangedup, a terrific duet consisting of a viola player and a dynamite percussionist. Might not sound like the most compelling combination, but these two make more interesting music than 90% of the bands I've heard in my life.

Here a few other things you might like:
Pavement
Of Montreal
Arcade fire
The Shins
Rilo Kiley
Grizzly Bear
Any thing from the elephant 6 collective (a group of various side projects and bands like Neutral Milk Hotel The Olivia Tremor Control and The apples in stereo)
Pixies
Ra Ra Riot
Beirut
Andrew Bird
Sebadoh
Patrick Wolf

There are more, But anything much more obscure is kinda hard to find.

Indie has a unique sound to it that is different from other genres of music (somewhere between alternative and new wave). Therefore, it deserves its own genre. Also:
- Metric
-Fleet Foxes
-Modest Mouse (the kings of indie)
-Vampire Weekend
-Neutral Milk Hotel

Oh, I forgot to mention They Might Be Giants (Althogh aclling them "indie probably isn't accurate.) Okkervil River, Islands/The Unicorns and Babyshambles. I'm not sure where the OP comes from, so It's hard to say what s/he's heard of.

EDIT: and the beta band.

The internet does not change depending on where you live.
(Meh, the OP might not be on the net much/familiar with music communities)

You be surprised at how much it can differ depending on where you live. The Shins aren't very well know where I live (the U.K), yet in the U.S. pratically everyone's heard of them. That said I'm not that into the indie scene, so my knowlege isn't exactly colossal.

How is it bad that you've heard of most of them? That just says you have decent musical taste.
Actually that says you have the same tastes. Unless you really are trying to say that your tastes in music are the standard by which all others should be judged. Cause if thats the case I have horrible taste in music. The few bands I recognized on your list I really don't care for. Yet strangely I still really like the music I like. Odd, huh?
The thing i find interesting about internet forums is that everyone is constantly jockeying for social position but picking out little things in other people's posts that they can attack. Sometimes i think its interesting but by and large i just think its annoying as hell....

Errm.....Yes! my musical taste is obviously the baseline by which all other peoples tastes are judged and I, the almighty determiner of musical tastes, declare that you have crappy musical tastes and therefore, you suck.....Happy?
Sarcasm! I love sarcasm, such a great tool! <-- That was actually not sarcasm. Okay I lied it was little sarcastic. But it is still true.

You are participating in exactly the same behavior you are condoning but in a way that is supposed to stop others from reciprocating less they fall into the trap of just "jockeying for social position" like you claim all others are doing.

What I was trying to do with the first post was point out the absurdity of you claiming your tastes to be the gold standard upon which all others should be judged. That would be incredibly egocentric of you. It seems you could only interpret that as me trying to knock you down a peg or two.

I have been a member for two years with less then 500 posts. Think about - does it seem that I give a damn about "social position?" This is the only forum I post to because usually the quality of the posts are decent, and the people are open minded and fair for the most part.

Translation:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't post a lot on this forum. Since i don't post a lot, I don't care about what other people think of me. I think this a good forum.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You're a person (i hope), so unless you're absolutely insane, you obviously care about what other people think of you.
.

.
You forgot to capitalize an "i" at the start of sentence.

Also be fair. Don't paraphrase something I said, then make a disparaging comment on that. I said I did not give a damn about social position. I believe I actually put that in straight quotes to show that it was your words. Yup I did, yay me. I never said I don't care what others think of me. If that was the case I never would have responded to you in the first place. Also if I was trying to pretend that was true I might have made up a flimsy excuse to cover why I was responding.

Oh! I really like the Go-Sheilas for some reason. I am a sucker for a cute girl that can sing.

*Warning, hipster rampage ahead*

Slagsmålsklubben
Bondage Fairies
of Montreal
Sabrepulse
Black Moth Super Rainbow
Bubblegum Octopus
Boards of Canada
Animal Collective
50 Hertz
Mice Parade
Caribou
Rymdkraft
Dan Deacon
.....

Just to name a few :p
Hipster Rampage indeed... its bad that i've heard of most of them. The Knife may sound indie but they really aren't(in my opinion). And animal collective are just way experimental, they are really popular in their own experimental way (my girls is one of my favorite songs ever.)
How is it bad that you've heard of most of them? That just says you have decent musical taste. Like i said before, that's really is just to name a few, and i kept most of the really obscure stuff out of there.

Oh and I think indie is a rather horrible umbrella term for any current(ish) band that isn't hugely popular and doesn't completely conform to musical norms. Quite frankly, getting into arguments about whether a band conforms to a subjective, vague, and arbitrary categorization is pants-on-head retarded.

P.S. What is "most of them"? 40%?, 90%? You named AC and the knife, which are both rather well known.
Around 85%, I have heard or know of most of them, it's unfortunate because I spend more time listening to and thinking about music than I do about studying or actually getting out to see them when they tour over here.

Also you're right about the indie thing and I will add to it. Bands who record, mix, edit and possibly produce their own music outside of a large label themselves or with smaller labels/producers are said to have created their music independently: thus indie. So in summary saying indie_____(insert genre) is just saying they produced it in a low key manor outside of a major label regardless of what the band actually play.
