After the cut and paste dungeon crap that Bioware pulled in order to get Dragon Age 2 out quickly, I'm content to wait for Valve games.

My theory is that Valve finished Episode 3 forever ago. They've all played the shit out of it and it's a big in-joke for them. Why not release it? They all have some crazy bet about who lets it slip first.

They take their time as they refuse to release tripe.
If you don't understand this, you don't deserve their games.

To quote Shigeru Miamoto (Or however you spell his name), "A bad game that gets delayed is eventually good, but a bad game that isn't is bad forever". He said that to justify the countless delays on Ocarina of Time, which is frequently stated to be among the greatest games ever.

The people at Valve aren't lazy, they're perfectionists that have to get every little thing right. This means the game takes longer to release, but a game spends a LOT longer in the post-release period, which is what everybody will remember the best. Cut Gabe some slack, guys. Ep. 3 is coming.

Then again, slack isn't the ONLY thing Gabe needs to cut back on, the fat ba-

I'm actually not sure if I'd buy the next half-life anyway. As I've gotten older I've become less and less interested in the franchise.

On that same token, I realize that they release games when they're satisfied with them, but I also think they really need to do something with the timeframe they release games IN. Plenty of high-quality studios release AAA caliber games on less dev-time than Valve, and its not like Valve games are far and away better than every other game out there. (in fact, in cases like Portal 2, they can even be somewhat underwhelming).

I don't particularly care about any of Valve's game, but this is really the same as how I've come to view Blizzard. Specifically, that it's looking less and less like a case of the developer taking the time to perfect the product and more like the extra time is a result of simply not making an effort to complete things in any reasonable time.

Not to say that they might not go about managing that perfection anyways, but that being the justification for the time taken is bs.

But, they can do what they want, not going to hurt them any until it starts turning away customers. And let's face it, the people that are going to get upset about this sort of thing are going to be buying it regardless, no matter how much they rage in the meantime.
Very true. They could very well be thumbing their noses at us in glee. Which is why the people raging about it should - but won't as you say - grow a backbone and some bloody willpower and NOT buy the game - or any game said developer releases - when it does finally come out. In the capitalist world we live in, money speaks louder than whiny, insincere bitching on the internet. (Not a reflection on the OP, just so y'all know.)

Have they announced Episode 3?

No?

Then what are you bitching about?

Hands up those of us "older" generation of gamers that waited 14 years for Duke Nukem and 11 years for Deus Ex....

Now point at the younger one in the OP and tut at his impatience.

You'll get the games when they release then, no sooner. Whining about release dates will get you nowhere.

And no i'm not losing patience with them. Games get released when they get released.

you know, i really loved every valve game i've played. that being said, i can never shake the feeling that no matter what it is i'm playing, i'm just ACTUALLY playing a half life mod. Left 4 Dead (1+2), Portal (1+2), hell, even Team Fortress (1+2), it just all feels like a mod. The games are still better than most of what i play by any other company though.

what i really don't understand is why with all their resources, and their in-house engine that they've been working with for YEARS, why it could even take them this long to release an EPISODE.

i see one possible reason for why Episode 3 is taking so long: it's going to be boxed in with (and serve as a prequel to) Half Life 3. i'm betting that they finished episode 3, felt that it didn't quite feel right to release on its own, that it lacked a cohesive story (being an episode, not a full game) and felt that in order to not shame their name, it would be better served alongside Half Life 3.

I think they should start what the finish in a way, before they start mucking around with new titles like DOTa 2 and counter strike they should finish off Episode 3, if this was half life 3 we were talking about id understand, but to take this long on just an expansion is insane

I think it's entirely not our place to tell a company that consistantly produces high quality games when to schedule their releases or to become impatient with them not doing so. Just let them do their jobs. Can you put yourself in their position, where you're trying to work on titles that you believe your legions of fans will appreciate, and all you hear is "please sir, can I have some more" and "when when when when".

Just be patient lads, it's really not too much to ask for.

I know, it's almost like they own the largest digital distribution service in history and keep running updates on their most popular game, while constantly creating DLC for others.

Yes, Valve take a ridiculously long time to get their games out the door.
Yes, Episode 3 is ridiculously overdue.

But when all is said and done, I'm not about to argue with results.

See, Valve happen to make ridiculously high quality games. (At this point I shall pause to deliver a proud one-finger-salute to anyone who says otherwise.) If their long production times and obsessive QA result in those games, then I'm not in any hurry to complain.

Besides, it's not like my happiness in life is dependant on Valve releases. When they put out a game, I'll probably buy it and I'll probably be happy with it (100% hit rate so far). When they're not releasing a game then, well... I'll be doing other stuff. I don't really see what there is to be impatient about.

nah. I'm not frustrated. But when there is a news on its release date, I would love to hear Gabe Newell's explanation on its delay.

Uh, No?

I have other games / hobbies to occupy my time, I can wait.

Besides, it's their game, they can take as long as they like.

I used to, but I got over it.

There are plenty of great games to hold me over till Episode 3 / Half-Life 3 arrives.

I support Dev cycles that are essentially "fuck you, we're making it the best we can and we're not going to rush, go suck an egg." I still wish it didn't take so long though.

Half-Life 1 and 2 were important games in the history of PC FPSes. They were innovative and wowed most people who played them at the time of their respective releases.

If they're waiting until Half-Life 3 can occupy a similar space in gaming history, I'm all for it. I have too many games to play as it is.
