valve have the same problem as square enix and lionhead.

they try to do too much at once or to put it into one word overambition

valve tend to releace games in bunches and they all have a long dev cycle where their dev teams are spread thin.

square enix have the same problem except they tend to be constantly starting projects before finishing the previous one.
This doesn't really explain Valve's problem at all to be honest (or Square's but that's another topic entirely). Yeah, Valve tends to have fairly long development cycles, though interestingly, they've been managing to change that if the time between each iteration of Portal and L4D didn't make that obvious. Hell, they've had four separate releases since 2007 (one of them including 3 new games), with two more games coming out next year. More to the point though, they don't really have multiple dev teams either. People there really just choose to work on anything that they think they can contribute to and add value in. The people there literally have the freedom to just work on projects they're fired up about.

But really, I think what this whole thing comes down to (or at least it should) is that if the only problem Valve really has is that they have the financial freedom and the drive to take as much time as needed to make games that don't suck, then there isn't really a problem at all.

They can take however damn long they want to, but they should chill out with the release statements if they're not going to stick to them. Release dates are a DEADLINE. In the real world, telling your boss a project will be done by Friday and then saying you need three more months because it's not working exactly the way you thought wouldn't fly with your boss and would probably get you fired.
Couldn't disagree more with your statements honestly. We're not talking about someone working on some project with a set deadline where if they don't meet it contracts fall through, sales disappear and companies go bankrupt. Valve chooses to take as long as it takes not to spit on their fans, but to respect them by giving them games they feel are worth buying.

And if you haven't noticed, Valve are not only not a small time company (easily the largest independent developer I know of with a lot of critically acclaimed and well loved titles, not to mention a dedicated fan base), but they haven't missed a release date by much in a long time. To my recollection, the last time it happened was Portal 2 getting pushed back a few months, and they announced that happening several months before the original planned release date.

Well from what I heard they are looking for new shit to do, apart from Episode 3 they don't really have an IP that needs to continue.

And just so you understand they don't actually have that many people on development, sure they have plenty of money to go around but they like to keep things tight, two or three projects at a time is really all they can go for, and all of those take forever to polish out.

Right now I imagine a good chunk of the dev team is making a new engine and Ep3 is on hold till then, Source Engine still does a decent job but it's really at the end of it's lifespan.

Considering I thought Half life 1 was boring, linear, and all together not worth my time, yeah I was done with Valve a long time ago.

Portal was brilliant, Portal 2 not so much.

Team Fortess 2? I love the art style and the videos, but really could not give a damn about class oriented competitive FPS games.

Half Life 2? more of the same. it was Fantastic 4 Rise of the Silver Surfer bad.

Nah. TF2 is still keeping me busy and DOTA 2 is on the way. Would I love to hear any HL3 news? pfft yeah. But I'm not exactly frothing my mouth with excitement. It'll come when it's ready.

I have plenty of games at the moment and have other big releases to look forward to, so Valve can wait as long as they like as far as I'm concerned.

I lost my patience with valve about six years ago and have never looked back. Nothing to do with their release times on games though and more to do with them being assholes.
Yes, how dare they make quality games and deliver free updates on them for four years running now, they should be nailed to crosses the douchebags! They should be shot on sight for even thinking of making mod tools!

... Are you seriously calling one of the best developers for the PC market assholes?

But considering they never even formally announced that they are actively ~working~ on Episode 3 I'm not too bothered really. Do I want it? Sure! Am I fussed about it? Nope, they're making and maintaining plenty of other great games, some I even enjoy more than Half-Life so, yeah, they can take their sweet time on that one.

... Did Gabe Newell run over your dog or something? (Either with his car or with his own mass)

Considering Valve, as I mentioned, are one of the rare few developers who don't extort their customers through DLC that you have to buy and instead making free content updates, and still put out modding tools for fans to use and make their own content with, and put out their games at reasonable prices (as opposed to say, ?60 for the PC version of Black Ops), how are they assholes?

And why would you not give them another chance even if they improved their ways? You seem... awfully bitter.

I mean, I'm a little annoyed, but I guess my assumption is when Half Life Ep. 3 comes out it'll knock out socks off. And in the mean time, steam is a service I use all the time, it runs like a dream, has been secure for me, and just about any game of theirs I've played bears a seal of quality no one else in the industry can seemingly touch. So yeah, I'm fatigued, but it'll keep.

Then I liked talking about Ep:3
Now I don't care about Ep:3

Time, man.

Nope. I'm not getting sick of waiting for Valve to release their games. There are many many other amazing games/books/movies out there to take up my time waiting for Valve.

Nope, I've come to terms with the fact, yes, FACT, that Episode 3 is not happening, because it's vaporware...

Shut up, it is!
