The first thing that pissed me off was having to go find a thermal clip. It took me an hour to get over that. I could see why it would liven things up but it really does fly in the face of the first game.

The second thing I noticed upon my first fight. No duck/crouch. Seriously? I don't like cover based shooters. I got my start with FPS gaming when doom first came out and if you wanted to take cover in a lot of those earlier games- you moved your happy ass behind an object. Something about the feeling of being glued to a box just doesn't sit well with me.

I spent every combat section looking for the appropriately designated objects/walls to run to. The game is set up in such a way that it generally doesn't give room for much else. The enemies are triggered and sometimes spawn in from nowhere repeatedly. It's a show piece and you'll be damned if you don't want to play it the way they set the pieces up. Irritates me.

I also was disappointed with the story. I spent so long building up my team, I was hardly surprised when the game ended shortly after finishing everyone's loyalty quest. Really? That's it? You die. You come back. Go fight the collectors. Oh wait you can't until you get a magic piece and build a team. Do those two things. Ok- time for end of the game.

Seriously?

Very disappointed with that. As previously stated there weren't nearly enough side quests. The mako bits could have been improved upon instead of simply done away with. The game really was missing something there. I missed buying guns and upgrading them also.

All the areas were incredibly compressed. The citadel went from being a space station to something that felt like a death match map.

I felt they outdid themselves on the dialogue and I got more than a few chuckles out of the quick time events. Otherwise I wasn't really impressed. If I wanted a better shooter, I'd just go play one- an online one because no AI will ever stack up to human competition. Waiting on BF BC2 to come out. When I play RPGs though I want depth. ME2 didn't deliver.

Better than the original in every way. The gameplay is so much sharper and better to play, the story is better (more original; ME1 had some good moments but at heart it was a generic fantasy only set in space), the writing is even better, the characters are better, the secondary quests are so much better it's incredible. And I don't miss the uninteresting, somewhat annoying drives around bland planets that have nothing more than different coloured random lumps and the odd copy/paste outpost.
The writting was better? I'm sorry but did you miss SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER the human shaped reaper at the end? I mean WTF was that?

Don't get me wrong I think the story in ME2 was awesome just not as awesome as ME1
Nope, the writing in ME2 was much better. Firstly, even ignoring the main story, the characters and dialogue are much better written on average, people like Mordin, Jack, Thane, the Illusive Man and others are all more interesting than anyone in ME1. The side quests are better written, that is totally indisputable IMO.

And finally the main quest, well ME1 is basically just generic fantasy set in space - the hero (Shepard) is the only one who can find the mysterious artifact (Conduit) to stop the ancient evil (Reapers) foretold of by the prophesies (Prothean beacons) from destroying everything. Sure, it's presented well so it has some really good moments, especially the ending, but the basics of it are a bit generic for it to be really consistently interesting to me. Whereas the main story of ME2 is much more unique and inventive, so I like it a lot more.

Love it, love it, love it.

ME1 had some major issues. The inventory system was just stupid, you were constantly getting hundreds of things you didn't need. The Mako was even more stupid. Driving around in a thing that drove like a grand piano on 4 swiveling ice skates, just plain dumb.

While I would have liked a little more complexity in their inventory system (maybe some more items vs: all the reasearch and planet farming). But the combat was very good, 100x better than the first. I would like being able to use multiple powers at once. I like the ammo as a power thing too, that was better than the hyper-item management of the first.

So much more was put into the core of what makes the game good, the characters, the story, and the gameplay. Everything else was trimmed, and that was a good thing.

All I ask for is a damn duck button without having to take cover. Am I missing it?

That being said, I haven't been playing ME2 long, but it's got me hooked so far.
Try clicking the right analog. It'll blow. your. mind.

Edit: wait thats the first game. Wisecrack backfire. Ouch.

Mass Effect 2 needs more RPG.
Equipment != RPG. Really, I preferred the RPG system in Mass Effect 2, it made the skill purchases weightier whereas the old 12 point scale made each point spent feel largely inconsequential.

I also liked the dropping of individual weapon skills. Shepard is supposed to be a special forces officer with several years of military service, the fact that s/he is incapable of hitting the broad side of a barn is silly.
The inventory system wasn't really ditched like a lot of people are saying. It was moved to the upgrades and weapon's management spots in levels and the Normandy. I do miss being able to change my squads armor, however. The alternate costumes are generally default costume or black costume. I want Colossus and Titan armors.
