I loved everything about ME2. It's currently in my Top 3 games list.

My only real complaint was that I'm probably going to have to wait a loooong time for the finale to be released.
It's coming out next year, it's jsut going to feel like a long time. In the meantime, I'm going to replay some ME2.

Planet scanning is one of the very few flaws in ME2, compared to the dozen or so glaring holes in the original ME. I loved ME1, but there's absolutely no question that ME2 is overall superior.

Planet Exploring in the Mako blows.

It's AWESOME that pistols aren't superior to every other weapon now.

And Biotics are actually useful compared to Tech.

Sounds like nothing but benefits to me.

It's an unfinished game that removed to many RPG aspects. Unlike the first one which removed to many shooter aspects. Hopefully bioware will get the balance right third time around.

Edit: Also the cover controls still suck. You can't take cover in corners, you constantly get removed from cover when using powers and such, and the biotic powers themselves are practically useless. Making all those neat new animations for the phyisics powers a waste of time.

Edit Edit: And don't get me wrong. It's a wicked game, still very fun. Just that after I enjoyed the first one so much for it's RPGness. I expected to enjoy the second one for the same. Having all of what I enjoyed about the first basically removed or gimped to heck led me to become extremely disappointed in the game, as it's not what I was led to believe. However, I stil enjoy many aspects of the game, just not the RPG parts.
Wait, wait...biotics were crap? Have you even used any? As an Adept, I have to respectfully say that you're wrong and that biotics are good once you get used to them. I mean, there was little use for Push, but Pull (useful on the many occasions that enemies are on the other side of chasms from you), Warp (heavily damages biotic Barriers and Armor), Shockwave (takes down multiple enemies straight in front), and Singularity (hard to describe, think of it as laying a trap) are amazing.
Have you played on any mode above veteren? Most of the powers beyond Warp and Reave have little to no effect on sheilded or armored enemies.

Edit: Apologies for the double post.
Fair point, no, I haven't. I haven't even finished my first (Veteran) playthrough yet, so I'll reserve judgment until I do.

Why do people keep thinking ME2 removed too many RPG elements!? They didn't remove them, just refined them god dammit. Everything is still there, but now there is not so much stupid redundancy like the first game had. Complaining about ME2 removing any of it's RPG elements is a joke, skills and weapons weren't dumbed down, and the shitty micro managing is the only thing that has been taken away. Hell if ME2 didn't satisfy me so much I'd be the asshole right now saying that ME2 is nothing more than a shooter with weak RPG elements tacked on.
Why? Because they did in comparison to the first game. Example. Not nearly as many side quests, difference between choices are not represented as well. Customization of your character is dumbed down to the point where they might as well have just removed it all. Exploration of area's has basically been shot to hell. Choices made from the first game where not represented well at all, barely showing any of the results given. In some cases they completely ignored the choice made and forced a choice on you.

Dialog was pretty blah, not really any attitude or personality shown, even with renagade shepered. Very litle ability to effect the world around you beyond the main storyline. Stats are all over the place. Inventory system is non-existant so choices of how to outfit has basically been removed also.

Lots of RPG stuff removed. It's a shooter with a really good story and dialog.
A great many of those things are simply because people complained. Not as many side missions? Because everyone complained about how similar they all were, so they took their time and made sure they were all different. Exploration shot to hell? Everyone complained about the mako. No Inventory? People complained about the first game's, and this one basically gives you the best weapon of each available class anyway, what would you do differently with an inventory? As for the first game's choices not being represented, I'm still amazed that they managed to import choices at all. Keep in mind, this is the first game to do that, there will naturally be some kinks in it.

Well, MW2 is a really good shooter, and it sold 12 million copies. RPG fan's are in the minority. My qualms with the first game were the existence of inventory, and annoying quest givers who give you no money. World of Warcraft is as boring as hell unless you spend a billion hours on it. It feels like work, but I'm paying for it. I loved ME1, but I found the length a bit unjustifiable. I loved the Mako, and I hated that giant galactic map and the music that slapped me in the face everytime I wanted to kill something. I don't mind navigation, in fact I would welcome some kind of orienteering mission through space or on land, preferably with a stealth element, but I really don't like whiny quest givers asking me to solve their problems. I HATE side quests.

I can't think of a single change I didn't like, and I think RPG's are long, boring, repetitive, feel like a job or obligation, waste electricity, and could be roughly simulated by dribbling a basketball for hours without stopping, minus the physical activity. And judging by the poll, 19 out of 20 people agree with me.

Absolutely not.

I love every change they have made apart from:

a) Planet scanning (still sucks, but at least your space-radar can cross mountains without getting stuck...)

b) I can't make Shepard look like me in the new creator, and my imported Shep looks wierd.

It's up there with Fallout 3, one of my two favorite games I've ever played.
Agreed on everything except your second point, which I only disagree with because I always used defaults anyway, I never like crafting my character's face (except when I made my Fallout 3 character look like Gordon Freeman, that was awesome).
Yeah, thing is I like to do the Geeky role-play thing and pretend my character is me... which usually means I end up being a goody two shoes and ending up with a character that almost always looks... nothing like me no matter how hard I try. Heh.

I don't really like the default Shepard. He has crazy eyes.

Upon looking at the poll options I think I threw up a little in my mouth.

I didn't vote, but I enjoyed ME2 quite a lot. Some of the "customizability" was a bit over the top and there weren't many side missions, but so many things were brought to the table in an appealing manner that I cannot be disappointed. I'm on my third playthrough now.

Bioware's expecting to release it in roughly 2 years, which isn't so bad :D

That said, Mass Effect 2 is probably my favorite game of all time but I'll admit I don't agree with all their decisions. I love the new shooting mechanics, but I absolutely despise the new method of displaying your ally's health. I kinda miss driving the Mako around on planets (purely for the spectacle) but the pisspoor vehicle physics are not a loss for me.

mass effect 2 is just really damn fun to play, but i agree with what people are saying about the lack of RPG elements the first game had. you're pretty much restricted to about 5 or so now, and you can't get new ones other than upgrading the ones you already have.

I just finished on hardcore on my adept and have to say it sucks a little at the beginning but gets good near the middle to end. Reave and warp are very good especially if your reave hits multiple targets. And once i got assault rifle training it was game over. Biotics are fine once you get your upgrades and stuff.

OT: The RPG elements have definitely not been taken away. Ive played both a soldier and adept so far and they feel very distinctive. Plus there is still the pause screen to manage your team which you won't find in any non-rpg(don't hold me to that by referencing some obscure game). I sorta liked the micromanagement of weapons and armor mods but I also really like the way they did weapons in ME2. And I don't think ive ever been that on the edge of my seat as I was during the cut scene flying through the debris. I mean, that was my whole game right there and I was praying I hadn't fucked it up. If that's not great storytelling I don't know what is. GOTY and Best Game EVER (so far...looks to Mass Effect 3...)

Dammit
I clicked "fail" because I was expecting the second choice to be "no" in response the the thread title question. Grr for bad polls.

I'm hesitant to call it my favorite game of all time for two reasons: (1) I'm a Zelda loyalist and have never been able to say I like any game more than OoT or Twilight Princess and (2) it's too soon to say its my favorite.
I'm playing through the first game again as my more hardened (though not necessarily Renegade) female Shepard (who looks like Karen O somehow). I'm looking forward to the differences in ME2.

It's at least my third favorite game of all time.

Better than the original in every way. The gameplay is so much sharper and better to play, the story is better (more original; ME1 had some good moments but at heart it was a generic fantasy only set in space), the writing is even better, the characters are better, the secondary quests are so much better it's incredible. And I don't miss the uninteresting, somewhat annoying drives around bland planets that have nothing more than different coloured random lumps and the odd copy/paste outpost.
The writting was better? I'm sorry but did you miss SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER the human shaped reaper at the end? I mean WTF was that?

Don't get me wrong I think the story in ME2 was awesome just not as awesome as ME1

I think Bioware have adopted the slogan for another product for ME2, "no boring bits" . While the Mako part was fun in (very) small doses, I don't mourn its loss. Exploring (Scanning) planets has a purpose; I can research improved weapons and armour rather than just picking up re-skinned versions of the ones I already have.
Also, Shepherd no longer handles like WW2 veteran in a wheel-chair. He moves quicker, aims quicker and on the whole responds quicker. That says Spectre to me.
The only bad part is I know I'm going to have to wait ages for the next one once I finish this one.

ME2 game play is far superior to ME1... not to say ME1 wasn't also great.

Agreed. At first I had to get use to the changes in combat, but after I did, it is awesome and superior to the first one. To me the game is far more believable now. Like it could actually happen. It just feels so more real then the first one did.

The combat in the Makko was terribly simplistic and repetitive. Good riddance to it.

The thing about the shooty action in ME1 is either that in the side-missions the level design ruined it (because there was only like one room and you would tediously have to attack and retreat) or in the main missions everything was too easy for some reason. Also, the fact that enemies walked right up to you turned things into a cluster-fuck. It?s odd that the actual mechanics of the combat were good but they managed to ruin it anyway.

My vote is that the gameplay in ME2 is in every way an improvement over ME1.

So, let me get this straight. You miss the combat and tedious driving from the first game? You say me2 has bad controls? What is this I don't even?

They don't call it "Hard Sci-Fi" for nothing.
An interesting thing to observe for those of us that have read the books... the combat seems to match the lore described in the novels more accurately than the first installment did.

Actually, I never read the books, I want to but I haven't bought them yet. The change from overheating weapons to thermal clips also made it feel more real to me. Everything just seems to fit seamlessly together.

All I ask for is a damn duck button without having to take cover. Am I missing it?

That being said, I haven't been playing ME2 long, but it's got me hooked so far.
