I'm absolutely getting Destiny. I preordered it, played the shit out of the Beta and loved it. Some may say that it looks like Borderlands with everything good about it sucked out. I for one think that it's Borderlands without hit-or-miss humor, tighter controls and a better story. Some may say that it looks just like Halo did. Well, it is made by Bungie.

I don't care either way. It hits all the right notes for me, and it's looking like it'll include almost everything I could want from a sci-fi FPS: Good, expansive campaign, guns that are satisfying to use, fair multiplayer... The fact that I can get it for my 360 means that I'm sold.

Cyberpunk with a heavy industrial themes. Still a form of sci-fi but very different feel and atmosphere.
Mmmm....but even so that's still very much science fiction. (though I'd argue that the series has only the vaguest touch of cyberpunk)

I think, in a lot of ways, comparing the two is akin to comparing Star Trek to Star Wars.

Half-Life is a bit like Star Trek in that it tackles the darker, more human themes one sees in hard science fiction, whereas Halo is a bit like Star Wars in that it's more high-fantasy, lighthearted space-opera.

Both are very much still within the realm of science fiction, but I agree with you on each being very different in tone.

Maybe some of the people who pre-ordered played the beta, like me, were legitimately impressed be it and made their decision based on that. Unlike so many games with pre-order bonuses this one actually let people play it beforehand to see what the game was like. I played the beta, thought it was incredibly fun and pre-ordered based on that. What right do you have to say that decision is stupid? None, it's their money, their decision. I personally view pre-orders as completely optional, if I like the bonus I'll go for it, if I don't I won't. It also has a lot to do with faith in the game's developer. I have faith in Bungie to deliver a quality experience. If you don't, or just hate pre-orders, then that's your problem. But don't try to shame people because they have different buying habits than you.
If you buy a game based on a beta then I would hardly call that smart.

The fact remains that pre-ordering games is POINTLESS in a digital era. The entire reason pre-ordering came around was so that people could get their hands on a product before it sold out. See Playstation 4, now there's something you had to pre-order well in advance or risk waiting a very long time.

But pre-ordering videogames? Seriously? What benefit does it give you BESIDES the pre-order bonus, a bonus that exists entirely to entice you to pre-order the game to begin with?

Like I said, it's a poisonous state of mind. Doesn't matter if you trust the developer or how much you were blown-away by the beta, just hold off clicking the "purchase" button until the game releases. Will it kill you? Do you risk anything by doing that? Is it too much to ask?

There's two sides to that argument, if people were planning on getting on launch day anyways then they might as well get the bonus stuff for no extra cost. I'm not gonna deny that the pre-order culture has it's problems, but if I see a pre-order that looks like a good value for my money I'll go for it. That's what I've always done and it hasn't bit me so far. If people have just a modicum of restraint then they'll be fine. Your problem appears to be with people that do not and will pre-order anything no matter what. Developers aren't innocent, but not all the fault lies with them.

So Im going to co-opt this thread for a moment, rather than inflicting 'yet another Destiny topic' on the uninterested.

Bungie announced that there would be exclusive in game emblems, which tie to your Bungie account, and its heritage (How old the account is, whether you every received any accolades on the forums etc etc).

Now to me, this seems like a terrible idea. If you're at all familiar with the Bungie forums you'll know they're currently a particularly horrible and toxic place. With an 'old guard' of people despising the influx of new members related to Destiny taking over the site, and the influx of new members resulting in some questions about the general quality of content being posted. Now Im not going to advocate a side here, because they're both asses. The new community has a habit of ignoring the subforum layout and posting everywhere, because to them the whole site is Destiny and Destiny alone. The old guard (For any in the know, Im not ignorant to what they call themselves, Im just not humouring them by using it.) are basically behaving as open trolls, causing trouble, shitting on the new community and acting like a tiny self contained forum of ill-repute.

ANYWAY, that was setting the context.

I was looking forward to the game coming out, people playing with whoever they encountered in the online world, and the rivalry cooling down a notch as both sides realise the other arent the massive stereotypes being spun by each but gamers who enjoy playing the same game.

However, with the edition of very visible emblems which are tied to forum heritage, this will allow the bullshit to continue into the actual game, with the veterans using the emblem as proving mark, to easily continue the hatred well into the game, rather than have it deconstruct once people got playing.

I can see how it seemed like a good idea to Bungie, giving a nod to their longtime community and thanking them for still being there. But with the attitudes and toxicity of the forums, it just seems like it will continue to enable shitty behaviour all round.

(Not that it matters an ounce, but for anyone who frequents both here and there, and might try call me out on it, I will be granted some emblems by this program, and I still think its dumb.)

No. No one is getting Destiny. Not even you, you're all going to wake up tomorrow morning and realize that Destiny was just part of a really long involved dream you've been having.

Bungie is going to release their Borderlands rip off and it's just going to sit on store shelves gathering dust while everyone goes outside and plays stick ball in the street.

Oh Wait most people here said nope? alright it's almost like a big name company can't get away with producing a generic rip off of someone else's game idea and hope to be successful!

Or maybe only the people who weren't interested clicked on the thread.
TPS for me all the way! Avid BL fan here, can't say no to more looting and shooting while building the characters to my liking.

Well Destiny may provide the same but it's certainely missing the charm BL has.

I've been part of that toxic community for awhile. Left it as soon as I found out how bloody vile the community can be. One of many reasons why I won't gett Destiny.

Probably would if it was PC. No chance as it stands, though. I've had about enough of borderlands, but I'd still love to do some more shoot & loot.

I just saw a live action...(Yeah live action? 99% CGI but still live action) Trailer that had a lot of Finger quotes "Humor" in it like they're realizing that the charm and personality is what most people love about the Borderlands series.

But everything was so Scowley faced and serious in the Beta that I lost interest really quick.

You surely made me curious about/strangely interested in the trailer (I don't follow anything Destiny after I felt queasy due to the fov once from looking at gameplay).

It was just an add that played on a Youtube video I watched this morning.
It's worth checking out, but I just saw it as Bungie going "We're not so serious all the time! Destiny will have some levity!"

But I doubt they redid any of the in game writing a week before release.

The live action trailer is meant to represent a group of friends playing together in a fireteam as they go, not writing.

There are no written player characters, only NPCs and some generic responses. The characters are 100% MMO. You get a bunch of sliders and notchs and make a character yourself. It is one of many.

Its actually one of things which has been irking me since that trailer. That people are running around saying those characters look like they're trying too hard, or too bland or blah blah blah. They're not characters. They're a group of faceless player characters, being voiced by the players. Well, by actors. Its still an ad. But thats what they're aiming for, anyway.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I never looked at it like that.
I guess the Borderlands comparison meshed the best with my cynical views of marketing so I never considered any alternatives.

If it ever comes to PC and if it's well received I probably will. Otherwise no because the only console I have is ps2 and I have no plans to get another one.

Not getting on release but may eventually get it on PS4 simply to get a game a few friends and I can play together seeing as we very rarely play the same types of games. I am not a huge fan of FPS games but I will play them on occasion, from what I have seen the game seems more rigged and less impressive than I was hoping for but I have not tried the beta so maybe my experiences will differ.

I wont be getting it on release though its to expensive for a curio type game and I have a feeling its a game that will tumble quickly in price once the hype train wears off as I think it will have a big push and not enough uptake leaving lots of unsold copies retailers will want to get rid of then I will maybe get one, at least thats what I am hoping. Regardless its a game I am mildly interested in but its definitely not a guaranteed purchase. If my friends dont get it then I definitely wont.

If there wasn't an online requirement, I'd probably say "yes." Right now though it's "maybe." I don't think 'Destiny' is as groundbreaking as some make it out to be, but it still looks fun. I'm fine with that if it is and the online requirements don't become obtrusive.

I lost a lot of interest I had in Destiny awhile back, not sure why for I was really interested when it was first announced and then I just forgot about it. After watching several videos it hasn't really caught my attention and I am not about to spend $500 (console and the game) for something I am not sure I will spend a lot of time playing, maybe when there are more games that have my interest.
