I think if more games used achievements like Mass Effect, then yes. In Mass Effect, some achievemnets unlock in-game bonuses like increased combat effectiveness. More games should do that sort of thing. Then, achievemnets would actually impact the game.

Depends on the achievement, for example the seriously 2.0 achievement for gear 2 is not worth it.

I don't really care one way or another, but I do use the gamerscore to tell whether they are actual gamers or just retarded online players. For clarification: If your score for a single game shows that you have not even finished the tutorial mission- you suck, online whore. I like multiplayer and all, but if you can't even play against the AI then I don't want to play with you either.

When the achievement actually involves part of the game, collecting things, or testing your skill with the controls and the like, then they are great and I love collecting them. However when you have achievements such as play 1000 games online or kill ridiculous amounts of people online, it shows a lack of creativity on the makers part.

Also when they unlock game benefits, it's great. Like the mega man blaster from dead rising for zombie genocider. Or as said before Mass Effect, which also gives decent gamer pictures.

Albeit my score is 58k, so take it as it is

If done right, and make the player find a new way to interact with the world, they can be cool. Others (like get 1000 kills or play 20 hours) are just lame. I think there's an article on the escapist about it actually, but I'm not sure.

I think that achievements are 50/50 in terms of awesome.

On one hand they can convince you to play certain parts of games you would have otherwise missed, so they're a great way to encourage replay value which I like.

But then there's the ones that invovlve you sitting at the Xbox for ages doing comeplete menial things and not having any fun. (Hexic Addict, That GRAW Achievement, Perfect Dark Zero's 100(0?) games online achievment) those can all die. Unleess I'm having fun or challenging myself to get them, then they're stupid.

I hate them but will fight tooth and nail to get them. I got crackdown and saw the achievement to climb to the top of the main tower as a Challenge. To be honest, it was the best achievement that I've gotten in a while because I went somewhere in the game world I never would have done. I actually felt pretty good after getting it.

Maybe if they gave you MS point rewards after a certain number was reached like say every 4000 points they might be worth something. But since they are not, their only real use is bragging rights.

My point is no one goes out of their way for trophies. When you get one you feel something to the effect of "wow did I really kill that many people?" or "wow did I really run that far?" With achievements though there are entire websites devoted to the sole purpose of collecting them.

To sum it up for you jerks that can't remember. Trophies tell you what you've done, Achievement's for lack of a better term is a means by witch to validate your existence to the rest of the digital world. Who all very very frankly don't give a flying walrus fuck.

Don't you fuckers get it. Achievements are just cheat codes for game developers. With achievements all they have to do is write down some words that make an annoying noise when you do something right, instead of making a minigame to do the exact same thing.

Achievements are a failed attempt by Microsoft to lengthen the game 4 or 5 hours. The only problem is that there's no point. All gamer scores are giant dicks attached to your foreheads that you show off to other dickheads to see who's head dick is bigger.
VG Cats Reference. Niiiiice.

OT: Achievements aren't really important. Sure they help me strive for stuff I know I can do. But then there are the ones that take a Doctorate in the Game your playing to get. Those ones can fuck right off.

I guess it sells games so that the 'A-Whores' can raise their scores to look cool among the community, so its clearly good for business.

I think they add a fun dimention to gaming. I like working toward specific goals in a game. Especially if the story mode isnt that rewarding.

No, they are not worth it.

What do you get?

nothing, yet people think it validates themselves somehow.

i like the way that games like Legendary did them, usually for uncovering something, or finding something humorous, there was even a achievement to poke fun at themselves, and apologize for the achievement name "Dou-bull Trou-bull"(i forget if that's the name) and gave you an achievement named "I owe you an apology".

If they're witty, i guess have them, but if they're stock, you deserve a sledgehammer in the ear.

If you like the game, sure.
But just getting an achievement trophy for the sake of it (especially if you don't particularly like the game) is pretty sad.

If I had to choose between an achievement trophy or a relevant in-game reward, I would take the in-game reward.
Example:
GTA pre-4: Vigilate missions earn you extra armor
Good

GTA4: Vigilante missions earn you an achievement trophy
BS

They're a fun way to keep games fun for a slightly longer amount of time, besides that, it's nothing. I don't hate people who brag about their games score, but it annoys me like hell when someone with a higher gamerscore thinks he's above you or something. Like when someone just ''commands'' me to do something entirely different just because he wants it, and when i ask him when he obtained the right to command me i get something along the lines of: OMfG StfU Noob my gamescore is highr than yors
