Once every blue moon I play Lord of the Rings Edition Risk with my Dad, and my nephew loves playing Candyland. But I can't say I ever see myself buying one at the store, and they're certainly nowhere near as popular as they were a couple decades ago.
I play them every now and then. Most certainly not as popular as they used to be though.

I'll play Trivial Pursuit, occasionally.
Otherwise, I'm not much into the classic franchises, which're essentially games of chance.
The only physical games I've considered buying lately were card games such as Munchkin and Dominion.
However, considered is the word, really. It's too much money for something I'll hardly ever convince people to play, in all honesty, when I could just play a game with a normal deck of cards.

I play Risk and Monopoly frequently with friends with games lasting hours and are often memorable for my lifetime.
I have also played the never released Warlords: Battlecry boardgame and have to say that it was some of the most fun I have had with a board game, It is a disappointment to myself, my classmates and probably most of the boardgame/gaming community that it has not been published (and might not, either, despite protests)

As everyone said, they are certainly not as popular as they used to be, but, like wargames and role-playing games, they still have their own significant niche audiences, so they are not going anywhere, for the time being. I would play more board games if A: I had the money to afford them, and B: I could actually get together with my friends to play them.
They're anything but dead, actually. Just visit any 'geek store' near you and you'll probably find dozens of IPs you never heard of.
Personally, I like board games where one sessions lasts several hours or even a day. If you are similarly inclined you might want to check out Twilight Imperium, Vampire: Prince of the City, and possibly Tannhäuser. I also remember the Age of Mythology board game being fun.

I like some boardgames

I play a tonne. My family plays loads of Catan, Arkham Horror, Shanghai Trader, Talisman, Dungeon Quest, and a bunch of others.
Newest addition to our household has been a game called Smallworld. Absolutely brilliant fun. Waiting patiantly for Risk Legacy in australia... but may just have to import
