Some games are art and some are entertainment. Such as some books are art and some are entertainment. Such as some movies are art and some are entertainment.
And, importantly, to stop people using a good game's title to shamelessly generate hype for their own game, without remaining faithful to the original!dathwampeer said:The reason behind people wanting it to be recognised as an art-form, is because then governing bodies wouldn't be able to censor the crap out of them.
I probably should have used the word entertainment and not media.FireDr@gon said:Fair enough, but if you feel that way you might want to retract your last statement about how media should be both.D Moness said:Sure i watch ENN: newsroom for that, america (and here since a short time) have the daily show. They make fun of news. Not all news should be entertaining just like not all games should be art
ps. Forgetting the british Have I got news for you (great satire program)
Also, satirical programes like 'have i got news for you' are created soley for entertainment purposes and make no attempt at actually reporting the news.
It comes down to purpose; the concept of a news program was created to inform, not entertain. I'll accept that the concept has evolved slightly over the years.
It could be argued that computer games were created to entertain and are evolving into art, just as the news has evolved from information into "infotainment"
You would have to give a definition of art. I don't think anyone is trying to defend playing video games, mabye 20 years ago but not when billions of games have been soldDanielBrown said:They're purely entertainment from my point of view. I don't get why people gotta label it as art just to defend that they still play games.
... and let the flame wars begin.
I don't think that people label them as art because they feel the need to defend their hobbies. I think that certain games are art because they have moved me, or taught me something about life, or are meaningful in some way or another.DanielBrown said:They're purely entertainment from my point of view. And your spending your time here? In a forum for these "toys" that have no artistic merit apparently?Th3Ch33s3Cak3 said:Games are toys, not art
