Some games are art and some are entertainment. Such as some books are art and some are entertainment. Such as some movies are art and some are entertainment.

It actually surprises me how many people say that games are entertainment only. I would think something like Heavy Rain would encourage the "both" position, and then there are things like Pathologic that's more art than entertainment (there are several reviews for this one that drive the point "It's not 'fun', it's not terribly meant to be, but you should play it nonetheless").

The reason behind people wanting it to be recognised as an art-form, is because then governing bodies wouldn't be able to censor the crap out of them.
And, importantly, to stop people using a good game's title to shamelessly generate hype for their own game, without remaining faithful to the original!

Video games are entertainment - pure and simple.

In many ways, the art of video games is a side effect at most, often related to making the video game a better form of game or entertainment.

Those striving for video games as art over entertainment are missing the point, and those who believe that they should be both are at risk of undermining what a video game is.

This is not to say that video games cannot become art, just that art should not be a key feature in their design. Instead, video game design should be focused on them as video games.

Both. It's not impossible for an entertaining game to showcase artistic elements.

Sure i watch ENN: newsroom for that, america (and here since a short time) have the daily show. They make fun of news. Not all news should be entertaining just like not all games should be art :)

ps. Forgetting the british Have I got news for you (great satire program)
Fair enough, but if you feel that way you might want to retract your last statement about how media should be both.

Also, satirical programes like 'have i got news for you' are created soley for entertainment purposes and make no attempt at actually reporting the news.

It comes down to purpose; the concept of a news program was created to inform, not entertain. I'll accept that the concept has evolved slightly over the years.

It could be argued that computer games were created to entertain and are evolving into art, just as the news has evolved from information into "infotainment"
I probably should have used the word entertainment and not media.
Although i wouldn't mind a satirical news program (that reports news as well) as long as they know the fine line between humor and offensive.
Honestly i will still stand by what i said even if i formulated a bit different then i intended.

They're purely entertainment from my point of view. I don't get why people gotta label it as art just to defend that they still play games.

... and let the flame wars begin.
You would have to give a definition of art. I don't think anyone is trying to defend playing video games, mabye 20 years ago but not when billions of games have been sold

I don't think that people label them as art because they feel the need to defend their hobbies. I think that certain games are art because they have moved me, or taught me something about life, or are meaningful in some way or another.

Well, both.

These questions are always so dependant on the interpreter and their mindset. :/ I hate to get involved in these types of discussions - as an artist, I of course view games as a huge source of inspiration and a very wonderful medium, and sure, I can call them art, but honestly... to me it doesn't matter. They're good stuff, regardless of their categorizing.

This again? fine.

Video Games aren't "an Art". Video games are "a medium" capable of artistic expression. Some games are art to some people and not to others. Some games don't try to be artistic or incite any emotion, and are just entertainment. It's the same for Books, Tv shows, movies, what have you.

Now can we stop bickering about this, please.

And your spending your time here? In a forum for these "toys" that have no artistic merit apparently?
