Realism is not always neccesary, you just have to make everything plausible in the universe you created.
For instance: Faster than Light-travel is impossible, but Mass Effect gives you technology that makes it possible. As long as it does not contradict with what you created before this is plausible within the universe of Mass Effect.

I'd have to say yes. Or rather, they're becoming too real and yet not real enough at the same time. You know, the "uncanny valley". That seems to be where developers intend to go, and in my opinion Heavy Rain is heading straight there with its focus on rendering facial expressions/details. I don't think I could play a game like that because everytime I see shots/videos of the characters, they bug the hell out of me. They're obviously putting a lot of work into that game to make the characters look and act like real humans, but the more they do then the more noticeable their inhuman characteristics are going to be. And, I'm sorry, but its the facial expressions specifically that are creeping me out.

I could handle a game thats realistic so long as realism as long as it fits the game's theme and doesn't become an industry standard. To paraphrase Game Overthinker, a video game just doesn't look like a video game to me unless enemies are inexplicably dropping items, power ups, or food that for some reason restores your health.

As long as they don't make the violence too realistic like how they were planning to have organs flow out of cut up bodies in GoW 3 then it doesn't bother me.
That looked AWESOME!
I always thought mega ultra violence in a game would be awesome when I was 15 but seeing that grossed me out.

Well, the hardcore mode that you describe emulates a reality that is undesirable to experience in real life, but takes out the least desirable elements (extreme pain and death). I think that could make it a potentially worthwhile experience.

As long as it's not done at the expense of fun, and the developer remembers that the game is but a small subset of reality, I don't see a problem with it.

Gameplay over all. I don't mind a game being realistic so long as it's realistic in an enjoyable way.

It's not that games are becomming too realistic, it's that gamers have forgotten the true meaning of a video game, which is having FUN. Too many of our breed rely on realistic graphics and gameplay. Gone are the days where you could just sit down and have the time of your life stomping on the heads of Goombas.

If I wanted realism, I would save myself the $64 and go outside. I play games for FUN, AKA doing shit you could NEVER do. Things like Prototype and InFamous. Screw falling 5 feet and dieng. I want to glide and run on buildings. I want to rip people to shreds using the hairs on my testicles damn it!

In the most recent game I bought, you can turn your arm into a blade, run up buildings and murder people in slow motion to get health. You hijack tanks from the military to kill mutated humans and monsters.

Games are way too realistic. I mean if I wanted to crush someone's head after I turned my hand into a claw, I would go out and do it in real life.

I think that Prototype is a nice balance of realism and fun.

Realism - tanks destroy other vehicles in one hit.

Fun - Your character can one-hit tanks and survive a missle head-on at 30 miles per hour.

Life is boring and full of consequences. Realistic games have their place, but I'd rather have fun than play "Super Kroger Bag Boy," on the Wii, naturally.

I say yes. Now why? Oh let be buy and xbox play CoD and let me blow the f***in legs off of some a hole! The more we allow games to do stuff like that the more you think it's ok to do stuff like that. Lets just ask the life sentenced Halo Kid!

Surely the idea of videogames is to escape life, how can you do this if things are becoming more like real life? Eventually you'll be playing "Car wash simulator", "Walk down the streets to buy a magazine and some gum" "Forge your name on granny's will simulator". Doesn't sound fun at all.... except possibly the last one.

I agree that some games are becoming too real, a friend of mine keeps saying that games are unrealistic and I always go on at him at how his 'perfect' game would be a game version of his life.
