Fuck that noise! I love hard games! Not stupidly, irrationally hard, but a game like Fallout 2, tough, but surmountable, and with a massively satisfying feeling when you finish it.
You mean like when you glitch out Pac-Man?
I've done that, actually. Took ages though.

It wasn't really me, it was me and two other blokes, taking turns in the arcade.

Level 256, baby.
Join the club. My uncle is unemployed and doesn't really do much, but stick him on Pac-Man and you'll never believe his insane Waca skills. I got quite far, then he did the rest. I had to keep making him coffee, and I had to help him drink it, he got so into it...

ok cod on veteran is like 2 hits and your dead, you spend more time prone then standing and is more about luck then skill, pop up lock on to enemy and then fire and prone with in 1-2 seconds rinse and repeat =/ not hard you just need patience and perseverance

Demon's souls sold quite well.
Eh... Demon's Souls isn't really good hard, at least I didn't think so. Sure, it's tough, but it's more frustrating than challenging.
whats good hard?

Honestly, some are, but most aren't. That's why they have harder options though, for people who can breeze through the easy ones. There are some games that are just too easy thanks to the no death penelty aspect, like Bioshock. You could turn that off, but that'd mean having to start a whole level again every time you die or contstantly save.

Maby I explained myself badly so heres more detail:

When I finnally deafeated "the mansion" I jumped up and shouted YYYEEESSS! I dont get the same feeling of overcoming an obstical anymore (although the end fight of half life:episode 2 part 2 was a definite throwback)

And mr.instakill assasin just caught me off gaurd and made me really role play I started thinking "o.k. this is what I saved that grenade (theres a potion that act's like a grenade) for and it also makes you stay on your toes
Another scene:A bunch of people turn into monsters so I position my party to protect key-people.

I hope this makes my point clearer. Games just dont seem to take me as long so they feel like they have less value for money.

well yes but older games had like one or two difficulty settings and both were challenging remeber your able to go down to advance if necesaryy most old games couldn't be made easier

Well that all depends really... Some games you could class as hard but others you could class as challenging and the remainder easy.

The kind of hard where you feel challenged enough to give it your all, but not hard enough to make you throw the controller down in frustration.

For example (just my opinion)

Good hard: Fallout, STALKER, Timesplitters, old Nintendo games, Brothers In Arms, DOOM 2, Contra.

Bad hard: Demon's Souls, I Wanna Be The Guy, Commandos 3, Battletoads (AAAAAAAARGH), Ghosts N Goblins.

Once again, all just opinion.
well... Demon's Souls then I would consider Good Hard, I think the reasons why people would consider it Bad Hard would becuase they are too used to other RPGs being too easy and usualy being able to survive a crap-ton of hits.

Do any of you guys think that maybe you think older games were harder because you weren't as good at gaming overall then you are now? I feel at least that I have an easier time beating harder games now then I used to because I have more experience in gaming overall.

I find most games too easy, especially if they don't let me go on the hardest difficulty until AFTER I have finished the game... but there are a few games that are slightly challenging...

I hate it when these threads appear on a GAMING FORUM

The kinds of people who frequent these forums enough to make and contribute to these kinds of threads are likely to be long time, frequent gamers also. This means that a lot of skill, likely across many genres, has been acquired and developed.

Games are not getting easier, gamers are getting better. If it's too easy, put up the difficulty. If it's STILL too easy, give yourself some form of limit, like only being allowed to use the starting weapon/s or for every enemy you kill, take a shot of Whiskey. If it's STILL too easy, you are a gaming master and no game beside old ones that killed you in one hit by touching anything (i.e. the really annoying, bad games of old times) will please you.

Plus, this topic appears fairly frequently. I've certainly seen it float around a few times before.

Games are easy, but not too easy. The ease of a game makes it enjoyable, unlike earlier games which were ruthless and therefore known only for their difficulty and more fun to beat than to play

Yes for most.
I mean most games this days are in the scale of "ridiculously easy" to "[sub]almost[/sub] normal". And I like the challenge in gaming so it's not cool when a game is too easy.

Now... I know that the difficulty of "hard" mode in most games consists mainly of enemies that have 999k health and do epic damage. that's not the point of the challenge, such way is just cheap and not fun. I like games to be designed well, have good responsive controls and intelligent AI so when you die you know that it's YOUR fault and not the fact game is just cheap.

Wishing for harder games is the main reason why I look forward to buying a PS3 and kicking the shit out of Demon's Souls.

Sometimes. Most games have the ability to crank up the difficulty however so I don't see the problem.

Personally I'm not too fussed about games being a little easy at times. Seeing as I still haven't seen the end of Earthworm Jim after owning it for well over a decade it's more a relief than anything.

There's a fundamental difference between games designed 15 or so years ago and those made now. Games were original made as challenges. Now they're made as experiences. The vast majority of the time modern day games are made so that most players will see the end eventually. Also part of the reason why so many games have multiplayer now.

Well it is important to realize that attitudes towards games have changed over the years. Originally games were built for the player to fail, so in to grab more quarters. Nowadays developers make the games in order for the player to win/have a good time. This rewards satisfaction to the player in a way that may incentivise them to buy more games from said creator.

I like a challenge, but I also like to win. If a game is doable whilst still keeping you on your toes, rather than just throwing as much shit as possible your way, then i'll be happy.
