Yes it is.
I'm pretty sheltered and I don't get spoilered that much.
But when I am, I always envy the unspoilered ones.
This. Then I go and hurt the person who spoiled it for me.

Someone told me the ending to Shutter Island before I'd seen the film. I just couldn't enjoy the film as I kept thinking about the ending, and whether or not the person who had told me was lying.

Edit:

A guy at my school spoiled the ending of MW2 for one of my mates. So my mate waited a whole year, then as soon as Black Ops came out, he spoiled the ending for him. It was pretty funny, and required a lot of commitment.

Yes, they are called spoilers for a reason. They spoil.

For example I am currently reading Atlus shrugged and I already know what one of the big twists will be thanks to people telling me it was the inspiration to bioshock (this is also the reason I picked up the book). So now, instead of the fun of trying to figure out what in the world is happening to these disappearing fancypants I'm just waiting patiently for the big reveal. 'Tis not as cool as it could be.

ugh. I guessed the ending to that film about a minute in. The rest just seemed so boring as I was just waiting for them to do the big reveal - everything else just felt like padding.

I have been paranoid to the level of a psychological disorder on the site ever since Assassins Creed: Brotherhood came out. I love the story so far and I really want to experience it myself, but the buggers at Ubisoft apparently thought it would be hilarious to release the PC version 4 months after consoles :(

Yahtzee already spoiled a major part in one of his Extra Punctuation articles out of the fucking blue and that made me sad.

So yes, please use spoiler tags whenever necessary. We do appreciate it.

Sadly I usually spoil myself... So yeah...

Yeah, the ending was pretty obvious, but I still would have preferred not to know beforehand.

Which books?
Wheel of time series and the Dark Tower books. I got to book 5 of 14 (15 with prequel) and i was bombarded with so many spoilers i just gave in. Good books though, i recommend them strongly.
I suggest you read on, despite the spoilers. At least for WoT. I'm of the opinion that they go downhill starting at Path of Daggers, but the latest 2 books are fantastic. Well, the ending to Gathering Storm and the entirety of Towers of Midnight.

Yes espessially in the case of surprises, like in the case of the "Darth Vader Revelation" the reason it and scenes like it are so great is because you don't expect it hell even James Earl Johns was like "Holy shit" when he first read that scene. Or in the case of a character death, if you don't know it's going to happen it can be an emotional moment, but if you already know it's coming before you even start the movie/book/whatever all emotions you MIGHT have felt for the scene are gone.

Are you really asking this?
That is a stupid question, yes they are that bad, they don't just ruin the shock, they colour your entire perception of the events, they copletly change the way you look at everything!

Have you played Heavy Rain? if not click the following
Scott Shelby is the Origami killer, the entire time you play as him you are gathering evidence that he left behind so he can destroy it.
He is killing the chideren because his brother died when their alchoholic father wouldn't get off his drunk ass to save him from drowning, and he is now obsessed with finding a father that would be willing to kill or even die to save their son.
There I just ruined the entire fucking game for you, every scene will be coloured by that knowlege, not a single red herring will catch your eye and you will feel nothing when it ios revealed, now try to tell me they aren't important.

This thread has convinced me the internet and wikipedia need to be censored of all story content. I don't give a damn about wikipedia's belief that "it won't be a complete reference" article. The story synopsis has no reason to be there.

I don't have a PS3, will never play Heavy Rain, and generally think that spoiler is a "meh" one right there. Point taken, but still...if it's good it's good. That one just seems half-assed to a certain degree.

I'll be reading a book or playing a game, then I'll go online when I want to know about a character or weapon or some such.

And then it says date of death.

Ruins the entire damn point of their death because I'm like "Oh. They die. Great."

I had the game ruined for me about a week after it came out because someone did that exact same thing, without spoiler tags, in a topic here discussing something vague like "unexpected moments in gaming."

One of the first posts went something like "It was awesome when you learn that ******* ******** was the Origami Killer, that totally blew me away!"

If there was ever a time, ever, when I wanted to reach through the computer screen and stab someone in the heart, it was then. I had literally started playing the game an hour before reading that, and what has been seen cannot be unseen. Sigh.

To this day I have to recuse myself from discussing the game, because I enjoyed it but didn't think it was some grandiose masterpiece. Could my opinion have been different were it not for an utterly insensitive and degenerate asshat? I'll never know.

Horrifying. I loathe spoilers with the intensity of a thousand suns, made of hatred and general unpleasantness. If spoilers had a face, I'd punch it in the balls.
The spoiler is a dickhead then? I see what you did there.
Yeah, spoilers definitely ruin your reaction to the event. If it's been spoilt, when it happens your reaction will be one of glum resignation. If it's not, you can experience so much more.

My dad spoils a shitload of things for me. Luckily, everything he spoils for me tends to be things I never had much interest in checking out anyway.

However, when I'm into something and I get a spoiler, I get really pissed. Especially because it's usually my fault. Like, accidently reading certain lines in a video game's wiki, when I just wanted to know something that I couldn't remember. (I got Vanitas from Birth by Sleep spoiled for me because I checked Ven's page for reasons that I don't recall, but were in no way leading to an intended spoiler.) I also have a tendency to look down the page at odd intervals when I'm reading a book, and depending on the book, that can spoil more than I'd care to know.

The moral of the story here is that wandering eyes are the bane of my existence.

Well, I guess it matters how big a deal what's being spoiled is, and how much you care about the subject material in the first place.

But yes. Yes, they are.

Some minor things I don't mind being spoiled, but very large plot twists and events that are spoiled ruin the impact. Like when I was reading Harry Potter, before I finished the series, I watched a video that added in "SPOILER ALERT! ***** kills **********." And I was like "NO!!!!!!" If I hadn't had that, that would have been a big surprise. I also accidentally spoiled another big death for myself. Luckily I didn't spoil any more. The impact makes the story so much better.
