As my math teacher repeatedly explains it:
This generation is no less intelligent than any other generation. We're just more apathetic. We simply do not care.

Every time he gives his speech on apathy, I always agree...

Me being a "kid" gives me a fairly accurate picture. Where I am, kids are dumber. Nigh on retarded. There some kids who are really smart but who don't learn. I'm a little bit of a special case though. I enjoy learning but I don't do any of my work but score ridiculously high on tests.

Anyways back on topic. I live in a fairly ignorant city though and my school has a D average but still, the students are pretty damn retarded. 60% dropout rate. Yeah.

I don't think we are, we just don't care. There is a large amount of disassociation in the younger generations between what we can learn and a reason to learn it. You get sent to school to be prepared for more advanced school and at no time do most find a way to link it to their life. So we go on do the work forget it after the test and just 'whatever' our way forward.

Though if we are... then I blame you older generations! You were supposed to raise us after all.

We are definitely lazier though, we have the technology for it.

Are they less intelligent? I doubt it.

Have schools quit doing things like teaching solid facts and ensuring that children understand difficult subjects, in order to facilitate more "feel-good" programs? Yes.

Have parents more or less quit paying attention to their childrens' studies and turned over parenting to the television and gaming system? Yes.

Intelligence can only get you so far. Children need a framework, and the help of older people who want to see them succeed.

People are generally the same, as has been the case for thousands of years. Either more education or less is the case, but in general there isn't a generational decline in intelligence.

But no, they're not. Same basic species. If anything, they're smarter, as the information age has seen expanded the knowlege basis. Besides, I don't think the current 'young' generation started any world wars, cold wars, et cetera. So that at least makes them better until their leaders screw it up.
They may not have made the mistakes we made because they quite simply haven't had the oppertunity too or don't yet have the capacity to (it's like saying a baby could never become a murderer because he can't even walk yet).

I have noticed a severe dumbing down of the younger generation, it isn't as importrant to be intelligent these days as it used to be since we have computers to do all the difficult thinking for us (someone askes you a question you don't quite know the answer to then you'll look it up on google or wikipedia), technology has advanced which would suggest a greater level of intelligence from everyone but our recent achievements are sadly not representive of any significant portion of the population.

Yes, kids are becoming increasingly more idiotic (I blame youth subcultures and online games for this...which is suprising considering that I, myself, am an 18 year old gamer).

Actually I would say "no". Each generation is more intelligent than the last. It's just that when people grow up they forget what it was like to be young and find themselves seeing things differantly. In general the older generations are always intimidated by the new ones. The "old fogeys" when you were young saw you the same way.

At any rate I think one of the problems with our society is the fact that our CULTURE has lost touch with the actual capabilities of children who are increasingly smart, and "maturing" mentally in a lot of areas (if not all) at an increasing rate. This attitude can be found in things like toys, where what people seem to think a 12 year old is able to figure out and find entertaining is often not the reality of the situation.

Not to long ago we had a situation I read about where a young kid got upset with a baby sitter, was able to remove a gun from where it was kept, load it, and then shoot the guy. I'm pro-gun, and don't see this as a gun control incident really, but rather a point that by common mentality the kid should never have had the intellectual capability to do all of that (the act itself being a lack of emotional maturity and understanding of what it is to kill someone).

To be honest, I think video games are rapidly replacing the toys of the past (if they haven't already) largely because the toys of yesteryear can't occupy the young minds of today.

Kids are quick to mark things as "doofy" that would have contented the young of earlier generations.

I also feel that this is why people are increasingly shocked by the crimes committed by children. It boggles the mind because at one time such things were simply not possible, but today they are, because children have changed, and society has not been able to adapt to those changes.

In my generation (I'm 34) I frequently felt that the system made the wrong assumptions about me and what I was capable of. I know other generations have felt the same way, and I think the problem is increasing as the capabilities of humanity increase.

I also justify my attitude by looking at the performance of athletes in years past, and how goys like Johhy Weissmueller (might have the name wrong, the dude who played Tarzan in movies) were considered almost "bionic" in how well they could swim, yet now their records are a joke. The most unbeatable seeming sports records are usually overcome by the next generation. Steroids only account for so much (especially seeing as old athletes were using them before the problems were uncovered).

If people's physical capabilities increase, and by all evidence I've seen they do, it's foolish to assume that mental abillities remain stagnant. While emotions are behind intellectual development I think even in terms of emotional maturity kids are progressing faster.

What seems like "Stupidity" might actually be caused by a mind working above the level society holds it to. Not always, but sometimes.... and honestly, young people still tend to have a lot of energy and do adventuresome things that ARE stupid to the older people. However this has always been the way of things.

Racing hot rods, "Rumbles" (to use an archaic term, they even wrote books about the big fights kids used to get into), and similar things have been going on forever. It's just that newer generations find newer stunts, and with the media the way it is, when something impressive (or more frequently: tragic) happens everyone hears about it, which was not the case for the majority of history. It might seem like kids are killing themselves being stupid in greater quantities from before, but such is not the case, it's about the same level as it's always been (allowing for our population) it's just now everyone hears about it and people think they can track the statistics where they couldn't before.

You're putting the blame in the wrong place. Blame the parents of these kids - the people who sue because they had their hands run over while stealing hub caps or got fat because they eat daily at a golden-arches. These idiots are the ones who have instilled the values into their children - it's just that the children are getting more of them than the parents did.

If I had to lay the blame for this, now that I think about it, I'd lay it firmly on the justice system of the "western" nations. I always wanted to be a judge so I could sit in a court room, get someone in, hear their plea and go "Are you fucking kidding me?! Get out, grow some brains, and think about what you've done *gavel*" for any stupid sueing (what is the plural) cases.

I blame standardized testing and the "here! All of you, pile into this school! We'll make it so the smartest kids have to do the same exact stuff as the dumbest of you shits!"

Also, I believe we're becoming more of a race of techno-fetishists with every new generation.
Intuitive menus? Great, they'll be fine.
Complicated sociopolitical issues? They don't even know the meaning of what I just said, let alone the problem.

Also, I'm seventeen, so I'm not entirely exempt, if at all.

Carefully reread the last sentence in my paragraph.

See, it actually bothers me when people say that. I've always learned everything I could. I've spent hours studying on end to do good in school, and as a result, I'm an honors student with many college options open to me.

Besides, comparing one generation (the middle one) to the younger one (us) is actually extremely flawed. You only have one past example you're using to compare with a newer one. And even then, we're Westerners. We don't have too much information about every other cultures, their elders, their current adult population, and their youth. So how can we actually made this comparision? Being alive less forty years doesn't make us a good judge of variations in our population. Besides, our grandparents probably said the same thing about our parents.

Most people think the more you know the smarter you are.But its more you understand the smarter you are. Take people who fear global environment change are the same that thought earth was flat. People haven't gotten smarter they just learn more trivia.

There you go. That's a great answer.

Kids are getting smarter in terms of knowledge - what they are lacking is common sense and the ability to utilize the knowledge they learned.

I would have gone with lazy, too, but it's not always because they are lazy. Sometimes, they lack motivation because we don't give them a reason to be motivated.

I think they are much more shielded and its gay. I remember getting covered head to toe in mud and dirt and my parents not caring, I used to hang around sick people and because of it my immune system is stronger and I never get sick now. Nowadays if your kid's temperature hit 98.7 you go running to the hospital saying they have contracted the fucking plague. If we follow our current path the planet will be full of pansies and we will all die from something stupid.

More ignorant to the world yes, things werent as easy for me growing up in a shitty area of Scotland hell the shitty area. Less intelegent well I have no doubt the next generation will be better than me with newer technology/scientific discoveries since I dint grow up with alot and im not that bright :/

But they wont have my life experiance or skillsets.

Eh anyway i dont ever plan on having kids too much hastle and I would have no idea how to handle them not to mention were overpopulated enough as it is.
