I'm just wondering out loud, are we being a little mean to new users?

Have you ever seen a thread made by a brand new user that is quickly met with criticism from the mods and other users. Comments such as..........

"This thread has been done a million times before!"
"Use the search bar!"

and

"Report and move on!"

..........are sadly some of the first comments newcomers receive from this site (note: I'm just as guilty as everyone who does this.) I remember when I first joined and made a thread, and how it was immediately shut down by a mod for being overdone. The fact of the matter is, everything in this life is going to be overdone sooner or later, so what's to keep a new user from making a Zombie Plan thread in hopes of being greeted by his/her new community.

I'm not saying there are those who AREN'T polite to newcomers (MaxTheReaper, you can gloat whenever you feel like it); in my opinion, "Welcome to The Escapist" should be the first thing a newcomer reads off this site.

But in the end, this thread is a question, not a rant (alright, it's kind of a rant), and that question is:

Do you think we are being too mean to newcomers?

Some new comers really need to read the posting rules before unleashing their half assed threads. That said im usually rather nice or just completely ignore the worst of those threads. Yes some people get annoyed by new comers i dont think we abuse them though, either way you have to be initiated in any new community theres nothing wrong with a little fun here and there.

EDIT: your poll sucks!
Pretty much this. Some new comers need to be disciplined, some don't.

We are mean to newcomers, but at the same time, we do have a set standard for posts, and general interactions. Some lessons are just learned the hard way.

But there have been times where it has gone overboard, but this how the world works with all the various opinions floating around like a fruit fly.

Only to the ones that deserve it.
I'm pretty tolerant for the most part, but if someone's first post is about Halo, Console favoritism, or just being a general moron?
No. I'll either leave or spend about thirty seconds mildly raging at them.
Leaving is by far the leader in the tally, though.

We're no meaner to them than we are to anyone else here, I feel. They shouldn't get special treatment just because they haven't spent time posting.

I'm only rude to [i/]those[/i] kind of newbies. You know the ones that within a half an hour have made like 20 bullshit overdone threads. Most newbies though actually just behave like everyone else so I don't go out of my way to give them an webernet swirley.

Well, none of those poll options are great... doesnt really make me want to rush and vote for any of them.

Anyway, no I think it is both old and new that do this... some of the new people walk around as though they have a pair of space hoppers in between their legs and think they can just be d*ckish in the forums, those ones deserve it... the others are okay though.

*waves at the nice new people*

Hmm, never got the impression of it, but then again, I am a thick person when it comes to that sort of thing.

I avoided starting threads until I had an idea what was wanted and what would attract annoyance XD

I've only made 2 to this day :p

And I got no welcome, I sort of sidled into the Escapist un-noticed. Like a Ninja.
