We are mean because we love them. Seriously, it's just our way of getting them used to the general tone of the site.

Your job when you join a forum is to lurk. Eventually you will be sickened by what you read and move on to 'greener' pastures without signing up or making a post. This continues until you realise that is just how forums work so you settle for the nearest one. This is how I came to The Escapist.

Tough love is what my parents have always taught me. Although, I wonder how much worse it is at WarCry, because 1) I want to test the waters and 2) Isn't it part of a badge to visit?

EDIT: Just went over there, they really like their MMO's apparently, seeing as the entire gaming discussion is mostly composed of that. Oh and Gone Gonzo=Master Looter

We should be mean to the ones who act like total fuckwits and have absolutely no manners.

If we lower the standards for them when they first get here, then they will continue to act like that once they've been here a while. If you get told not to make Zombie Plan threads in your first thread, you learn not to post threads that have been done before. It's called Aversion Training. By showing them immediately what would happen if they did "wrong", it dissuades them from doing wrong again in the future. Whilst it may dissuade them from the forum altogether, the stream of newbies filtered like this delivers a (imho) nicer new wave of members.

When I was a little noob I had a pretty easy time. It was all quite polite, you get ignored though. But if you go on a bit of a wobbler you can attract negative attention like a screaming brat.

We always say welcome to The Escapist, we're rather nice to them. And yes, your poll sucks, where's the option for "no and we should be nice?"

Pretty much every forum is mean to new users. Some do deserve it but most of the time people are power tripping because of rank, post count, etc.

We hurt them because we love them (as sirdanrhodes so quaintly put it). They need to be shown from day one how things work in here, so that the road into the group wouldn´t be so arduous. Besides, I don´t think we are any ruder towards newcomers than we are towards seniors. It seems only fair to assume, that everyone knows the guidelines (It, however, doesn´t seem like it).

No, not particularly, we just enforce standards. Everything anyone ever says to them is in the posting guide, so they kinda have it coming.

Also, your poll is terrible.

Sorry...I had to take that opening. At least this way all your abuse is done for the week.

Burn the noobs or cherish them...

Hmmm... which sounds more fun?

I like burning people. The smell is nice. So much better than air fresheners.

This happened to me today. There was much mean slinging of words and sure the guy seemed instantly retarded but he only had five posts under his belt and then the thread got locked. People clearly are too uptight on this site which surprises me because everyone has the internet (and thus limitless pornography) so just go have a wank and you'll feel better...

Well im a "newcomer" and so far everyone has been rather civil to me. But i think that has less to do with my post count and more with the fact that im not an asshat. I think that if people act like idiots we should treat them as such, no matter how many posts they have.
Pretty much Yup. Well spoken, I think. And Welcome!!

As a general rule newbies should lurk the forums and see how people act before they post. Even more so if they plan on making a thread. Some do deserve it and some don't but some people are just dicks to everyone. I always thought it was normal for anyone to use the search function but some people just don't think.

I have been to quite a few forums, and I'll have to say that The Escapist forumgoers are some of the most tolerant towards newcomers that I have encountered. At least if we are talking about gaming forums.

I'm a lurker by heart and have only started posting more than once a month recently so although I might look new I have actually hung out here for a while.
