Very recently, the folks at Extra Credits [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits] asked pleaded with the gaming community to clean up their act. (If you're interested, check out 5:57. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/2005-Gamer]) I'm sure several of you were nodding vigorously. Or you have at least, you've been aware of the asshat syndrome that the internet seems to have drawn attention to.

If you're new to the internet, or blissfully unaware, the folks at Penny Arcade made a comic a few years ago about what is now common knowlege; when you mix the anonymity that the internet gives you, mix them up with other anonymous people, and you draw out the asshole is some people. It can be about anything, any everything. As little as a speeling erorr can cause people to foam at the mouth, and let you know just how much they'd love to f$%x your %^@& through the back of your %@[@$x until you can't feel your $##%.

As a girl on the internet, and gaming in general, I get bombarded with a unique assortment of asshattery when I jump online. It really is like rolling the dice when I don't know anyone in the server I play on. I try to abstain from the "lollery" I'm describing. But no matter how hard I try, someone turns their cross eyed gaze onto me. "GTFO [my name here] fcktard!! Holy shits, AHHH" or something. Why? Well the most recent reason was because my name on the game I was playing was feline related. This person hated cats, and needed to rage at me. "Every time I see a cat, I break their fscking NECK." -- Rough quote from memory.

Now, either this person is a true to life psycho (never rule that out), or he decided to target someone he knew nothing about to get a rise out of them. If we were sitting side by side in the same room, would he still feel compelled to rage out to get a rise? Probably not, or at least, not at THAT person.

I'm friends with someone that trolls. He does it for the lols. I don't fully understand it. It just seems like he does it to get attention, or fleeting rise out of people. I will never fully respect him for as long as he does what he does. But there it is. On the internet, he's a passive aggressive asshat. When he turns around and talks to people he knows, even online, he's a cool dude. Point him at people that he has zero chance of meeting, and it's go-time.

I get burned out by people like this when I play games online. Hell, logging into forums is a roll of the dice. I don't understand why people (read; the asshats online) feel the need to troll. I enjoy the games I play, but really cannot stand some of the people that play them. If I quit the people that upset me, I quit the game that I enjoy. Ignoring them goes only so far (before you write posts on internet forums about them). Finding communities that you know only works for so long.

Anyway, I've sort of gone on a little bit. I'll sum this up; Are you a good person online? Were you once a troll, but cleaned up your act? Anyone want to shed some light on why people troll? Why you might have at one time or another trolled?
[edit, pardon the incomplete poll. I accidently pressed the enter key a little soon. Trying to update the poll now.]

[edit2, the poll doesn't want to update my changes. Sooooo, uh, hmm.]

[edit3, if you do troll, uh, standby, I guess. :p I'm TRYING to get that option put in. But the poll doesn't want to update that option.]

[edit4, if anyone knows a mod that could assist in my broken, half completed poll, that'd be great. :p Apologies to those that troll for not having an option for you.]

[Edit5, seems one of the changes went through. Like the system was lagged or something. Waiting on the other change.]

[edit6, I believe all 5 of my options are posted. Lets hope no one demands further changes. :p

I'm pretty much the same person online and offline. Though I'm more prone to fighting the dickwads online than I am in real life. F**king idiots...

EDIT: I just read what the poll was about :p. I have trolled a few times (like five), mostly because I wanted a good laugh. But they were very transparent trolls so I don't think anyone got that upset.

I occasionally engage in a bit of trolling if someone is being an asshat on a forum or something, but apart from that I don't really do anything. As for online gaming, I don't use a mic at the moment either, so it's a little hard to troll people there. I let my Commando+Tac Knife class do all the talking when I'm feeling like being a dick in online gaming.

As for whether I'm a better person online or off, I'd say that I'm much nicer online. I'm still a bit of a prick sometimes, but I'm far nicer to people I don't even know and will probably never meet than I am to my real life friends and family.

I've got less patience for those I percieve as idiots online than IRL, but I'm also more likely to just ignore them than calling them out on it.
No use fighting morons on their own level and all that...

Just finished making a script for removing the comment sections from the newspapers I read online so I wont be too annoyed by online scum.

I'm actually more considerate when I'm online. In real life, I know who I'm talking to. I know (more or less) how they'll react to what I'm saying, and I can use body language and tone of voice and all that to make what I'm saying or doing less offensive. I can judge how they respond and adjust what I'm saying accordingly.

Online, I don't know who's reading what I'm saying. So I try to be as careful and as unoffensive as possible. I don't want to accidentally hurt someone's feelings. I don't really see a point to trolling either. I find it pretty easy to ignore people who do it, though, so it doesn't bother me too much. And life has become much more pleasant ever since I stopped playing online.

I don't think i'm perfect by any means but at the same time i rarely get angry at what people say.

But ignorance and stubbornness put together really piss me off in a big way in real life and on the internet. I know the xkcd comic about people being wrong on the internet is right(i'll find it if people really want to know) but still if i see a person insisting on something that is clearly bullshit i will get pretty annoyed, i'll never make fun of them personally but i will happily rip into their idea. That goes for real and virtual.

As for why people do it heres an example: i have a friend who rages and breaks stuff if someone uses a hack or a cheap strategy against him in an online game but he still uses the same tactics at least every few days and loves doing it.

In my opinion the reason for this is that a hell of a lot of people are bullies underneath it all its just that in real life they:
(a) don't know anyone weaker than them
or
(b) worry about consequences

The internet as penny arcade point out the internet is more or less consequences free.

This is interesting. A lot of people (ignoring the poll until I can fix it) are saying that they're more considerate online. :) I'm clearly not playing the same games you are, but interesting.

Woohooo, I'm the first repentant troll to vote :3

OT: nowadays I'm actually more considerate on the internet... which I find rather odd.

I was never a troll. Don't even understand why do some people do it. You could say that I am the same online as I am in real life. No real point in pretending, right?

It's more likely that the people like us are in the exact same games you're playing when you get trolled, but because you're getting trolled and we don't do anything at all either way, we get forgotten.

I think the problem you're experiencing is that the total arseholes are generally the most vocal online, that's what i've noticed anyway.

The behavior the OP describes I wouldn't call trolling, just generaly fuckheadery. When I troll I do it for the lolz but online games trolling isn't really my style.

My style is more like chatroulette and youtube comments.

I like to think I'm a nice person online. It's just that the people who get trolled aren't that smart to start with and it can be really hard to resist.

You two may have a point. The trolls stand out, while those that don't blend in with the noise. Could be!

I don't troll, and I'm usually the same online as off as far as I can tell. I do counter troll though, or rather act as troll bait. If someone on the server is raging, I'll deliberately try and piss them off. If it's team fortress 2 I'll rename myself "W+m1 4eva!!!", equip the backburner, and go after them again and again. But if they're not harassing anyone I don't do it, I just fight fire with fire.

I wouldn't say better, since I don't really operate in terms of 'better' or 'worse', only different viewpoints.

I'd say I'm more contemplative online, well no that's not true, I voice my opinions more online whereas offline I tend to indulge in private contemplation, being more easy-going when I'm with other people offline, less concerned with philosophical matters.

Can I get someone to confirm there are indeed 5 options to vote on?
I'm only seeing 3 options, although I already voted before, so it might just be on my end. I've never had any luck editing polls before though, so it's quite possibly just showing 3 options.
