i donate, because here they pay you for it ^_^
40 euro for plasma, 55 for full blood and more for some special tricks they pull. (that's around 50-65 USD for our colonist friends)

i even used to have two donator passes with different names, so i could go twice as often by donating during the mandatory breaks with a different identity xD
You DO know that those mandatory breaks are designed to stop you dying of lack of blood, right?
i know, i know^^ but they are pretty fail-save and i got along fine with just half the breaks. stil i stopped because after some months i could slowly feel that it started to take it's toll. but as i said, those breaks are really overly carefull.
Yes, but some people's marrow is better or worse than others at making new blood. You sound like you can kindofsortofmaybeonlyjust take it, but I'd still hate the idea that I'm running low on blood of all things in my life.

I would, but my fear of needles and general unwillingness to help my fellow man stops me... mostly the fear of needles.

Also, I'm not really sure they'd want my blood...

Yup. O+. Can be given to anyone with a rhesus-positive blood type, wahey!
Wehay, a fellow O+! We rock don't we, can give blood to anyone else!!!

My card says I've given blood 20 times (though it's more than that now) but I haven't been in a while. Goddam university work preventing me from going back to my hometown and doing it, and I don't even have the time to find somewhere round here (in the middle of my exams atm). When I finish, i'll book an appointment and give loadsa blood, then go out with my mates and get wasted!

(so much easier to get drunk after giving blood, fyi!)

ps
How long does it take for you guys to heal completely? Because I can still see where the needles got stuck in the flesh, its weird my mother donates too and her 'needle spot' (for lack of a better term) are gone within a week. Mine are already a couple of months old and I can still see them. If this is gonna continue I'll end up looking like a drug addict or something like that XD.
Hmm. I don't feel any worse but the marks stay 1week to month. Once last summer the needle was in the wall of my vein and had a bruise size of fist in my hand for 2months :/

OMG! You get paid. We don't here in Finland. Nothing. But we get ice creams in summer time :)

We have the card also but they say it sucks and they prefer having only our driver licence with us. There is a bar code in the driver licence that gives more information than the donation magnetic stripe I think. And the bar code does not wear on time. I'll be donating within 30 minutes :)

O+ here, I get a cold call every 8 weeks and just tell them I'll see 'em on Saturday so please give me a reminder call on Friday.

I actually enjoy giving blood, the people at my local Red Cross are nice and it's unambiguously worth spending the time and effort on, unlike some things I do a lot*.

The only time I've had a bad physical reaction to giving blood was the time I got this enormous bruise (~5" long) around the needle site that took two weeks to disappear (it healed fast but the internal "scab" took a while to be reabsorbed). Even that time was pretty cool though, because It took less than 5 minutes to fill the whole unit bag (damn fast). Both of these occurrences might have been related to the platelet donation I gave 8 days before . . .

i might sign up to it soon and donate some blood. i've always wanted to do something like that.
It makes you feel good.

Edit

Don't think my OP submitted.

I used to give reguarly, every 3 months or so when the wagon wheeled into town but since working abroad in S.america and parts of Africa I'm not able to due to the risk of maybe having infectious blood. Gotta wait two years.

Guess the NHS are waiting to see if I croak from a blood disease.

As soon as I can (few weeks til I'm 18) I'll sign myself up for it.
And I'll give blood as often as I am able.

i have been donating since i was 17 (i live in the UK), its a great thing to do knowing you might have saved a life, and seeing as we have the NHS i think its a small price to pay for having free healthcare and also if i were ever injured and needed blood i would expect there to be some, thats why i donate. also i have a rare blood group so its extra important

I give blood fairly regularly. As I am an O-, my blood can go to anyone. It is also low in something or other which makes it especially useful as they can give it to babies. Because of these factors, I get regular calls and letters telling me how amazing I am.

Because I lived within Britain between 1992 and 1998, or something, I'm not allowed. Some bullshit disease risk.
Plus, I have ME/CFS, which means that, among other things, my blood is weaksauce as hell and useless to pretty much everybody.

Disappointing, really. I actually really want to give blood.

Why?
OT: No, not a blood donor yet, I've became legally able to, and have a good health, but I haven't gotten round to.

I would, but I just never got around to it (and there's a Red Cross building on my way to work). I don't even know if my blood is usable. It seems to work alright for me, though.
