I camp on occassion, but never more than maybe 1 or two kills or if I'm defending an objective. I tend to prefer flanking and then pulling back to safe zones more than out and out sitting in one place the whole game.

Easy question.

If you do, you ruin the game.

(Sniping is camping by nature, and that is how you use the weapon, so you do not count. This refers to when you are using anything except a sniper rifle.)
Ambushing is also not camping. Waiting until someone goes past and shooting them in the back with ANY weapon is a perfectly valid tactic in both games and real life, and many FPS games are filled with hidey holes so you can do exactly this.

The term "camping" originates from the days of Doom and Quake, where someone would sit at one spot where an item that gave them an obvious advantage (a good weapon, quad damage, extra armour) would always respawn. So people would say "you're there so often you might as well pitch a tent", hence "camping." Camping is about exploiting the mechanics of the map in a way that doesn't translate to real-life gunplay, it is NOT about hiding and them shooting someone in the back. That's just intelligent FPS play and it's the other person's fauilt for not checking his blind spots.

Camping is also not about sitting at somewhere like a capture point and defending it. That's just intelligent defense that anyone with a brain should do.
good explanation. ive had some moments while trying to crawl through some grass on a map when someone walks past i stand up and gun them down. then i have to run away, because the position is compromised.
Exactly. If you use that spot over and over, people will just spread the world that you're there and lob grenades in it or continually snipe you from across the field or whatever. So in this sense you can see that hiding isn't camping because tactically it's not unfair. It's actually a disadvantage to stay in the one spot if there's nothing that the game is going to hand you for staying there (like a powerup or whatever).
In MW2 the game doesnt give you weapons/powerups, so anyone camping IS just there for cheap kills. Moving up slow, choosing your position and hiding for a few moments isnt camping. I've seen teams never leave their spawn because of an A-symmetric map they can camp.

But you do now have the people who will change their position SLIGHTLY so you cant kill them in their previous position.
Can you say Terminal, Ranger Spawn??? That is the ultimate start. Run up to the desk in front of the loading ramp to the plane, and just shoot every Spetsnaz you see, which is a lot. Every time I do this, I get an AC-130 or Chopper Gunner. Its, just so easy.

Edit: "So easy, easy, when everyones tyin' to please me baby. It's so easy. It soooooo Eaaaasy, When Everyones tryin to please me. It feeeeeeels so riiiight, when I fade into the niiiiiight."

Love GNR!

I'm not a camper because I've never been that great with a sniper even though I'm a decent FPS player. I also lack the patience it takes to camp. I prefer the traditional "run around, kill everything that moves" approach. That's why I don't typically play team games unless team killing is turned off.

I generally don't camp. Even when I'm sniping, I'll find a spot, pop a couple of shots off, plant a claymore, and leave before the dude I just killed comes back for revenge.

Its a legitimate strategy so no they don't ruin the game.

i don't camp, but if i find a blind spot I'm not the one to pass it up.

but i prefer close range weapons such as shotguns or fast msg's so i can never really camp efficiently.
Hooray for RvB!

OT: I only camp when I snipe (obviously), and when I am in a place with one way out, with enemies coming in through said way. I am not giving up my "life" to avoid being called a camper.

Or when I have to reload and people keep coming at me. Give me a chance, dammit!

I perfer to sneak behind the front line then kill there front line retreat for rearm and health and then do it all over. I go for the edges of maps.

I will try sometimes. Even if it's my assignment in an objective game I get to impatient and charge. I can sneak and be cautious but can't camp

I was sort of expecting a chuck norris joke in here somewhere, oh well...
No I don't camp I try to find the campers (usually after they kill me though).

Most decisively not. I even start to feel guilty if I linger in one area for too long. Campers are a nuisance and can in some cases even ruin the online experience (MW2). And don't even get me started about spawncampers...

It's a legitamate strategy!
If there's a sniper rifle you need to camp. The game wants you to.
If a shotgun works at close rang and there's a rock along a main road, you wait to shoot someone as they run past.
I don't often do it but i have no qualms in doing it.

If you have a problem with a camper just grenade or rocket launcher the sod out.

I voted yes, because I will "camp" on domination in MW2. The point of the game is to grab your territories and *gasp* hold them! About half the time I'm the guy that doesn't run off after capping the first territory, and instead lets the rest of his team run off like a bunch of ADHD yahoos hyped up on cake. I'll find a nice place to watch the territory with my blinged holo/FMJ FAL and wait for people to come into my reticle. That's what I expect people to do when they go into domination. Grab territories, or die trying. I get rather peeved when people come into objective gametypes, and completely ignore the objective. Trying to improve your KDR by running into a domination game and sniping off in no mans land is weak shit...but I digress. The other half of the time I run around with marathon lightweight ninja equipped with a blast shield, a light smg, and smoke grenades and I just cap every territory I run across. It just depends on what my teammates do (usually nothing, but that's neither here or there).

I'm never bothered by people who camp. 90% of the time, I'll run to their camping spot and if they're still there, they die. If they're in the 10% that kill someone and then shift positions, well, then it's a much more interesting battle. I am not ashamed to say that I am "that guy" that will respawn and come after whoever killed them, especially if the person is rolling a high killstreak.

Yep, loads. Although I only do it because I'm completely crap at the game and am a talentless excuse for a human being who just wants to ruin everyone else's fun.

Apparently.

1st I have to say, when snipering, a true sniper moves to a different location after each kill, therefore not camping so much.

Back to the main point, I only camp in certain game modes, such as an objective based game where you have a point you need to defend. In those kinds of situations you'd be an absolute retard not to camp, and would infact ruin the game. There's nothing worse in an objective based game than some stupid douchebags not even attempting to capture the flag, or set off the bomb or whatever, but instead just cares about their KD ratio.

The only FPS I really consistently play is Day of Defeat (non source) so there are a number of maps where you have to take it cautious or defend your points by camping.

I get totally bored staying in the same place for ages. Plus, I really rather enjoy the campers as they're easy kills. The funny ones are those that never move. They'll always be there to catch my cooked grenades.
