I have nothing against cats, and find some of them rather cute, but certainly dogs. Mainly because of Corgis, pomeranians, collies, huskies, akitas, spitzes, daschunds etc.

For a long time we weren't allowed pets in our house. When we eventually could, we went and bought a cat & dog at the same time. They were best friends, and we loved them both. You're poll needs an option to reflect this.

As a pet.

Dogs are more interactive but they also require more attention. Cats do not play with humans the way dogs do, but they do entertain themselves instead (mostly by hunting and killing anything they can). But you can let a cat leave your house on it's own knowing it will find it's way and come back on it's own fine, a dog on the other hand will get lost pretty quick so you have to keep them with you or locked up at home.

As a animal.

Dogs are useless, they are wolves that have basically lost all their wild instincts and behaviours. If you abandon a dog it will likely die unless another human claims or helps it, they have no clue how to survive without human assistance.

Cats are good, if you abandon a cat it will survive very well on it's own, it will just hunt and kill other animals for food (which they do anyway), cats will eat anything meat, they will even eat their dead human owners if the body is not removed quick enough.

Moral perspective.

Cats are evil, they hunt and kill anything they can for their own amusement. They only bond with their owners to get free food, they have no concern for them, once the food stops they move on, they have no real attachment to individual humans.

Dogs are good, they grow protective of their owners and they only attack in self defence or owner defence (unless trained otherwise). Once dogs have bonded with their owners they will become legitimately concerned with the owners well being and will actively change their behaviour or learn new behaviour to fit into the owner life.

... So which do I prefer?

Nether, I'm not cleaning up something else's shit.

More of a cat person. Cats are usually pretty relaxed and rarely come up for attention. They do their thing, you just feed them and clean their litterbox and they won't be an annoyance. Dogs (at least the ones I've known) are always craving attention and care.

I like my cat, she'll come up to me maybe once a day for some pets and then she'll sleep for 10 hours and will wait for me to come and give her attention. When I lived with my parents our dogs were huge, smelly and had to constantly lick and jump all over you. Quite annoying. But I do enjoy how happy dogs seem to be every time they see their owners. You'll always have a friend to come home to after a hard day with dogs. Cats can sometimes be jerks for no reason.

So yeah low maintenance pets basically

edit: I don't mind small dogs though, except chihuahuas. Dear god, those dogs are the devil and the most annoying breed you will ever find.

I like dogs fine, but I prefer cats. They are just as affectionate, loving, and obedient as dogs if one actually bothers to raise them correctly, they don't take anywhere near as much time and effort to keep as dogs do, sometimes they'll lick you, and probably the best part, they purr. I have 3, and I can't go 10 minutes without one them coming up to me for affection, and I can't go 15 minutes without wanting to pet at least one of them.

I prefer dogs because i get the feeling that if i was hit by a bus my dog would care, not sure if my cat would notice.

Easily a dog person, although I adore my pet cockatiel. He wolf whistles to get attention. Cats and dogs don't do that.

But I do love dogs. Have a little Westie/Maltese cross scampering around the house somewhere, and a friend owns this massive Labrador that absolutely loves me. I've had some fun times with a few local stray cats, but nothing that ever approaches the level of excitement the dogs I know get when they see me. Watching those ears perk up and the tail start wagging gives me all the warm fuzzy feelings.

Cats are much more low-key and low-maintenance, which I like in a companion. Plus, I don't care for the dog smell.

I am a dog person. There are just some things dogs will do that cats won't. I can play fetch with a dog, or go for walks. I do appreciate cats. They keep mice away, and they generally take care of their business in a neat and orderly way. However in the end I would rather have a pet that I can play with and train.

There's not a "both" option?

I've lived with dogs and cats my entire life. I like them equally.

Definitely a dog person but I don't have anything against cats. I've just always had a much stronger bond with my dogs than with my cats. Dogs just have better personalities in general than cats, my current dog is the most loving creature on earth and worries about me something crazy. Although, my current cat is...interesting, and I'm slowly starting a create a strong bond with her.

There really needs to be some sort of PSA that reminds people that there is a such thing as an extroverted cat and that they can be trained. XP

It seems everybody always thinks of cats as introverted, independant, and distant. It isn't true if you get the right breed.

Some breeds will keep playing until they start to pant, like a dog. Some even play fetch.

It's extremely cute when a cat does these things.

I love both, they've both got their pros and cons and anyone who says that cats can't be loyal or affectionate are full of crap. My cat does all the things that you'd normally associate with a dog, he runs to greet me whenever I come home, he jumps up and licks my face whenever I sit down, he follows me EVERYWHERE.

.....Although that can be annoying as hell, had to get off a damn bus and bring him home one day because I didn't notice that he'd followed me onto it.

I suppose there are some cases where the cat will play around. I have owned cats, and I know cat owners. However, in my experience the type of playing cats I have had or played with were less active than with my dog. I would run around with my dog, and toss Frisbees and balls across the yard. With cats I could toss a ball of string, or have a little feather or mouse toy and have the cat run around a bit and play - but this was mostly within just a room and did not take advantage of a backyard.
I suppose I am a bit biased in my view given the type of cats I have had. My cat, Kitty, who I owned since a child was originally from the wild (we picked her up because we were dropping off rabbits we found in our garden out into the wild). Since she was from the wild, she mostly went off on her own for days at a time. She did come up to the deck and purr when near us. She did do some of the playing I mentioned, but compared to my pet dog, Bear, it wasn't the same level of activity. It wasn't the same. I don't want to say that cats cannot be fun or trained, but I feel that dogs are better for getting the owner active. While cats can be entertaining and full of energy, I would just prefer the type of playing that a dog can provide.

I voted Cats. Why you ask; well because 1) Cats are superior and

H.P. Lovecraft; Cats and Dogs said:
We have but to glance analytically at the two animals to see the points pile up in favour of the cat. Beauty, which is probably the only thing of any basic significance in all the cosmos, ought to be our chief criterion; and here the cat excels so brilliantly that all comparisons collapse. Some dogs, it is true, have beauty in a very ample degree; but even the highest level of canine beauty falls far below the feline average. The cat is classic whilst the dog is Gothic?nowhere in the animal world can we discover such really Hellenic perfection of form, with anatomy adapted to function, as in the felidae. Puss is a Doric temple?an Ionic colonnade?in the utter classicism of its structural and decorative harmonies. And this is just as true kinetically as statically, for art has no parallel for the bewitching grace of the cat?s slightest motion. The sheer, perfect aestheticism of kitty?s lazy stretchings, industrious face-washings, playful rollings, and little involuntary shiftings in sleep is something as keen and vital as the best pastoral poetry or genre painting; whilst the unerring accuracy of his leaping and springing, running and hunting, has an art-value just as high in a more spirited way. But it is his capacity for leisure and repose which makes the cat preeminent.
Thats right; H.P. Lovecraft, the guy who gave the world Cthulhu and most of the sci-fi horror genre was a huge cat love, to the point that he wrote an entire essay on the matter - full text here [http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/essays/cd.aspx] for your convenience - of which the above is an exert.

Cats: Human tested, Cthulhu approved.

Cats. It's not that I don't like dogs, but I'm not particularly fond of larger dogs and am definitely more fond of cats. Probably because my parents had a larger dog when I was a baby, but whatever.
