I like both. I've had a cat that was actually older than myself. And now I have a rather awesome dog.

On a side note: Cats aren't always silent. My cat was partially deaf, and so she had to meow louder in order to hear herself. The sound was deafening.

So are you trying to say that cats are not silent when partially deaf. Ok, so? They are also not silent when throwing them in a bath tub or spraying them with a water hose, what's your point?

I got both. My mom always used to breed cats for most of my childhood and stopped a couple years ago. She has always had a dog as far as I can remember back, and now she has two, and three remaining cats.

Coming home from school to play with a new litter of kittens every half a year was the best childhood ever.

You say "Can be" alot....let me tell you that living with three cats (and two dogs), two of which are psychologically damaged, one hating to be around humans and the other hissing at your hand, then strike it, then stop all hostilities and purr as you force the scratching anyway <.< ....the third one turned out normal like all the rest before, but for some reason, these two ended up weird. We could never sell them so we kept em. They are just around...taking the food we provide but otherwise living their own life.
And that´s the difference between cats and dogs, dogs have a master, cats have servants.

I've had several of each, none by my own design, and I overwhelmingly prefer cats.

I have no love for dogs, and an active hatred for pet birds coupled with incredulity at the kind of person that would take an animal that can fly and shove it in a cage.

Honestly, it depends on the animal and the person they're with. In fact, I would argue that an animal's personality and behavior is largely influenced by the owner, especially if they are naturally sensitive. My horse was a jackass, but when the bullet (or my head) hit the road, he came through where it counted, and his quirkiness charmed me. In the hands of an inexperienced person, he would run amok and be a nightmare.

My family has always been a dachshund family and I've had several. One of them acted more like a terrier, nose to the ground, and tried to fend off a full grown German Shepherd. They are tenacious little dogs. Generally, they also aren't that bright though. I had the cutest little man, and he was as sweet as sugar, but you could just look at him and tell there wasn't a brain cell in his head. Another one was quite smart and learned things on her own.

I've also had several cats, all subtly different. A house without a cat feels empty to me. My first cat wanted nothing to do with anyone, but one cat we had was truly a blessing from God. Anyone who has/had such an animal will know what I mean by that. They are irreplaceable. He was loving, delightfully quirky at times, and was everything good in a cat. I'll miss him all of my days. The cat I have now loves me above all others, but she's a prima donna and sulks whenever I go out of town. But she is the most...cat-like cat I've ever had and she is so darn spastic that I feel good just being around her. She plays fetch. I earned her affection and loyalty with many months of pain and suffering.

Bottom line, it depends on the animal. No one should write off a species because of bad experiences, misunderstandings about their character, or bad owners who don't keep boundaries of behavior. Nothing should be judged by its abuse.

I voted "cat" because I find them so entertaining I can't get over it. I even find their indignant sulking hilarious.

I like both really but I have to go with dogs, and I'm almost a tad surprised most people went with cats. Dogs too mainstream these days?

Cats.
Not for any particular reason to be honest. Mostly because my family never had any dogs growing up, so I've just always been around cats and am more comfortable around them. Nothing against dogs, but I just have no experience living with them for any decent amount of time. The closest thing I had to having a dog was when my Mom adopted one, then took it back to the shelter after a week.

Your cats are not "psychologically damaged", reacting to previous and maybe continuing traumas perhaps, but they are not damaged. They are simply doing what their instincts tell them. Most likely it's because you have no clue how to deal with those 2 so you are doing things to them and around them that they are negatively reacting to. Do some research on cat behavior, figure out what's bugging them and then fix it. Don't expect it to be fixed in a day or 2 either, it might take as much as several months to truly see a real lasting change.

I grew up with many of both, and I definitely prefer cats.
Dogs are much too needy, messy, annoying, noisy, and smelly. Cats are so much easier to deal with. My cats are potty trained, can flush a toilet, do tricks, set traps, and keep any insects, rodents, lizards and frogs out of the house. They are very good at catching flies in mid air. With their ambushing, traps and stealthy ninja moves they are countless hours of entertainment. Although I will say I prefer dogs over dog owners who think it is okay to take their dog for a walk and let them piss and crap in your yard, or put them outside at night in a fenced in area and let them bark all night, or get a pit bull and teach them to attack things then them let it run loose. Like them deciding to keep a dog as a pet entitles them to infringe upon everyone around them. Sure it is great if you pick up their poop, that is much better than those who just let them poop everywhere and leave it, but it is the fact that you think it is okay to let your dog poop in someone else's yard in the first place. Oh wait you find out a week later your dog has parasites? Great you are spreading them all over the neighborhood! UGH and the smells that come from their yards. So many dog owners let their yard fill up with feces and flies. It really is gross.

Yes, it is funny about cats, they think they are training YOU! You know what, they just might be right. HAHA!

I'm more of a dog person, but I don't mind cats either.

Dogs would die for you. Cats would watch. Which one do you want now?

Why would I want to watch my pet die for me? It is supposed to be our jobs to keep them safe. DEFINATELY CATS. Anyone who is stupid enough to train an animal to defend them doesn't deserve a pet. People should be training them to NOT defend them at all costs to make sure they don't get killed. That is what responsible pet owners do.

That way if the police raid the wrong house, or fire department has to enter, the dog doesn't get killed.

Perhaps I worded that poorly. I'm saying that a dog would die for you if it was untrained because dogs generally seem to care about their owners more than cats. I wouldn't recommend training a dog to die to anybody, because it is very cruel and I agree that the owner doesn't deserve one.

Sorry if I went off a bit. It is a subject close to my heart. I have seen dogs get killed for that, as well as my sisters 7yr old nephew being ripped apart and eaten alive in his own yard by pit bulls trained to fight that got out of a neighbors yard. It is often difficult to break dogs from defending their families, and their hunting and pack mentality, as it does come naturally to them. That is why I was saying I would definitely prefer a cat in that situation. Pets to me are like family members, I couldn't bear to watch one get killed, nor could I stand to be the one responsible for the death of another because of a choice I made.
Tanners attack:

Oddly enough a cat saves 97 yr old elderly woman from pit pulls:

I was looking at Tanners story and that one just happened to be there. I so was not expecting that.

Cat person.

Dogs are cool too, but I find their subservient, eager-to-please-ness a bit off putting.

A dog will mourn you. But a cat will eat your corpse and I respect that.
if you stay still long enough they wont even wait till then

Dogs won't wait until your dead. They would rather eat you alive. Although they will take you dead too.

Cats since I'm too lazy to take a dog out for a walk and cat used a kitty litter (yes I know some don't). Yes I would still have to clean it up but at least cat has their own toilet to used.
