I saw a documentary about domesticating foxes once...
...you know like how dogs were domesticated from wolves
I would probably be a fox person...

...but if I had to choose between cats and dogs...I would say dogs
I would love to have a fox, but I don't want to take them out of the wild. Also, I fear the screams they make D:

Dog. Kind of my only option, since I have cat allergies. But even if I didn't, I've never cared for cats much anyway. Yeah, kittens can be cute and they make for great memes, but I could never see myself owning one.

Also, cats aren't necessarily indifferent. My cat follows me around the house, and sits on my head when I watch TV. More devoted than any dog I've ever met.
See, if a cat tried to sit on my head, I would probably throw it across the room. But that would go for most any animal.

Unless mice are somehow vastly higher maintenance than rats, you should probably reevaluate the high-maintenanceness of cats.

I'd say the only place rats have a quantifiable edge as a pet is in the cost to feed them.
I don`t know about mice but rats are pretty easy to train to use a litterbox. My first rat would even run back to his cage to poop in a food tray (rabbit sized so he could sit in it) if he was out on the floor. My 2 girls just poops in the same corner of their cage for now. They scent mark everywhere though but it so little I don`t always notice. My old was probably worse since he was a "bull".

Cute overload!

Neither, in all honesty.

I've never had pets, since the parents never had time to look after them properly. It would've been irresponsible, never mind the fact that, having grown up basically without animals, I don't feel particularly comfortable around them, and thus don't want any in my house.

I've historically gotten on better with the dogs of friends than their cats. I don't understand the appeal of cats at all, in all honesty... mercenary little things that don't give a damn about you, and will occasionally dignify you with their presence in order to demand food or fawning attention.

Well, at my job at a Humane Society, I take care of all the dogs regularly
so I'm gonna have to say cats >_> (after being in a room full of barking energetic dogs, going to the room filled with calm quiet cats is like a mini-vacation)

Both, it depends for what I'm in the mood for. Dogs are good to muck around with, and they're good for a wrestle. Cats are good for a cuddle. Though, I do get along with my cat better than I get along with my dog.

I'm not saying that cats are bad pets, but they're inferior to dogs in pretty much every aspect that matters. Dogs were bred to be the best companions.
My cat would beg to differ. I've got my very own guard cat. Whenever a dog wanders into my yard, they find themselves with a cat attached to their face until they get scared away. My cat is more vicious than any dog I've ever met.

I'm more of a cat person. I love kitties, they're so cute and independent. I think they make good pets. I've had cats since I was baby, and I loved all of them. But I do like dogs too. I just prefer cats as pets.

I'm a dog guy myself. Cats aren't too bad but it seems like you're their servant. At least with dogs, they give YOU attention and they help keep you active by having you take them out for walks, runs, play in the park etc

Like I said, I don't consider cats bad pets.

But no amount of quaint anecdotes are going to override thousands of years of selective dog breeding.

I like dogs...or rather MY dog. He's well behaved, can be independent, and best of all...HE DOESN'T LIKE TO BARK!!! I know he can but he just chooses not to! He'd rather shake his collar if he wants something and thats fine with me!

There's a reason why dogs are considered man's best friend.

Ever heard of a seeing eye cat? Sheep cat? Drug sniffing cat? Police cat? Rescue cat?
Dogs are more loyal and their love is unconditional.

Cats often warn owners of heart attacks and seizures like this kitty.

As a long time cat owner I find cats to be the best companions for my personality. Not everyone wants a nutcase jumping around their house, barking and breaking things :p

I don't mind you saying you prefer dogs but I don't think you can say they are objectively superior. It depends on the person and what they want from a pet. I don't hate dogs but I wouldn't want one in my house. I don't like them that much.

If I HAD to choose, kitteh. However, I have no problem getting both, given a living space large enough to accommodate them. Either kitteh/dog or kitteh/ferret(s). It's complicated.

If that's what you think all dogs are like, then you've never had a dog.

Dogs have very varied personalities depending un upbringing and breed.

For instance, my dog is a weimaraner, a 'jack of all trades' kind of dog.

They're a gun dog, a hunting dog, a water dog, pretty much everything.

Because of this, they develop very strong bonds with their family, but this also means they suffer from seperation anxiety, i.e., they flip their shit when they're seperated from their owners, which comes with it's own set of disadvantages.

They also have a quaint characteristic of 'leaning' on their owner.

But I digress, not all dogs act the same, as I'm sure not all cats act the same. There are breeds of dog for people who don't want a high maintenence pet.

I had a doberman with my ex and he was a nice dog but he just annoyed me more than anything. I much prefer cats who still give you companionship whilst also keeping to themselves.

Actually, I'm 100% huma- Oh wait, that's not the question.

I'm a cat person. They have this amusing elegance and self certainty that makes them fun to be around. Dogs are ridiculousy dirty, noisy, smelly, loud and constantly in need of maintanance and attention.

I'm not a fan of either. I wouldn't say I hate them, I just don't have the time or energy to like either. That said I'd love to try each as food, although I've heard cat is stringy and dog is gamy. Still, I'm a lover of weird food.

No animal is above being dinner.
