We haven't addressed this subject in a couple of years, and many of us weren't here then.

Since I first joined I've tended to put some thought into most of my posts. Sure, there are times when a simple comment or joke was appropriate for some particular thread--a little levity never hurts--but for the most part I try to write posts with some meat on the bones.

EDIT: I'm especially careful how I post down in R&P. It doesn't take much to set some regular R&P posters off. ***sigh***

This has its ups and downs, of course. I'll write a post with references and links, having carefully considered what to include. And even after I post I find myself going back and nit picking a word here or there, rephrasing something...that sort of thing.

And more often than not I don't get a reply to what I wrote, leaving me wondering if people just gloss over what I wrote--the old "TL/DR" curse.

I also like to read through peoples' posts. It surprises me that so many people say that they don't post anything if they're not on the first page or two of a thread. Some people say that that is because they believe that anything they would say has probably already been said.

I understand that but I've often found that threads become richer the further you get into them as people swap opinions and such.

Of course there are the comedians. But I've noticed that even ones like Daystar, who is notorious for derailing threads, occasionally post something more than a quip or joke. Not too often, granted, but it has been known to happen. ;)

What about the rest of you, my fellow Escapists?

I try to balance humorous posts with serious posts as best I can. Usually I look for someone to quote as opposed to making my own independent post late into a thread.

Perhaps.

At times, I can be, but it really depends on the subject. I sometimes make sense when it's, y'know, an important topic or something. But at the same time, I prefer the "sillier" threads and generally stay away from the ones that would require me to approach them seriously.

Only in the User Review section.
Everywhere else, I either goof around or just post my opinion and go.

If I'm posting in a serious discussion then thoughts are had and a coherent, (hopefully) intellectual reply is formed. If it's not so serious then my degree of thoughtfulness is directly proportional to the OP and subsequent responses.

I'm stuck between bacon and whirlpools, so in this bacon whirlpool conundrum that I've found myself in I'd like to say I'm being quite serious with my decision.

I usually don't make serious posts, though sometimes I will. It depends on the subject.

You rang?

I can be serious when I need to be, but honestly, I have a lot more fun just goofing around.

I get in less trouble that way too :D

That's me, pretty much, though I only actively look for someone to quote in the 2+ page threads that I've only happened on late. For the still-short threads, I'll usually see where it's going, then give my two cents... with or without change is another matter, but still... *shrug*

Generally, yes. I don't really see what the point of posting is if you're not going to at least put a little bit of thought/effort into it.

That said, I've never really been one for lengthy back and forth internet arguments.

Depends on the subject the topic of discussion. If it calls for seriousness then I will be serious, but I have a tendency to joke about more often than not.

I'm a psuedo-pseudo serious poster, I pretend not to post seriously but my comments do tend to have a point. I still don't know why I'm posting on this forum.

If it's a thread in R&P, I'll usually take a bit of extra care. Or if someone's asking for advice.

Haha no! I mean sure I can make a long comment but I can make a big paragraph at most (curse my lack of vocabulary skill to form a long coherent statement). Beside I rather be that than to form a very long comment that it result to TL:DR for some people especially when there one person who I get annoyed at doing that with his threads (well in the past).

Sometimes, it depends on what mood I'm on and what thread it is, wouldn't be able to tell what my serious to silly ratio is, whatever it probably doesn't matter, though a lot of my posts including silly ones tend to take a lot of work, it's not rare for me to take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour and a half to make a post, they go through a lot of edits and stuff, and normally the end result is much, much shorter than what I had originally typed.

Hey the Internet is serious business!

>_>

<_<

...

or not..?

Nah, jokes aside I only post if I have something interesting to share or am really interested in the discussion going on. Hence, I rest firmly on the serious side of things and only rarely make a quip or a point that has been mentioned already without further input. The reason is probably that I get my fair share of funny nonsense enough when I'm out with my friends but not enough serious cerebral discussion.

....and, not to mention, I post regularly in R&P :D

I like to think I'm serious with a splash of humor. I'm not a naturally serious person so I won't pretend to be on these forums.

Like most the people here, a mixture. I won't miss the opportunity for a quip or a laugh but it's not unusual for me to post seriously either should the topic call for such a response.

Sometimes, I'm not very good at reading the atmosphere but I vary between playful and serious.

I try not to post too seriously on this forum because 9 times out of 10 somebody will criticise and pick apart everything you have written from point to grammar. There are a lot of passionate people on this forum with very strong opinions and I don't want to get too involved when it comes to moral/political debate. I made that mistake with some old gun law threads.

I have my own points of view and I dislike people telling me that I am wrong because I disagree. I always assumed a debate was not an argument but the comparison of different opinions coming together. Here, sometimes but not all the time, it feels like if you don't believe in said thing then you're either made to feel very small or intellectually challenged.

So that's why I tend to post more on the Forum Games thread because I can just have a laugh and nothing is taken too seriously. I'm always up for a laugh.
