I don't play games just for achievements, but that doesn't mean I can't replay them for so. For example, Duke Nukem Forever. I wouldn't play that game a second time if the achievements weren't so amusing to get.
Of course, I don't bother doing boring things, but Duke Nukem Forever's achievement's are surprisingly fun to get.

The sad thing for me though, is that there's less and less "making your own achievements" or doing amazing/stupid stuff to tell your friends about, because you have a more convenient achievement system.
*blinks* Do you even believe that crap?

By giving them something 'extra' to go for, people will play the game less than before? If people do something ridiculous in a game they aren't gonna tell people?

Yeah, achievements have destroyed human vanity and ego :p
I'm not saying it's on top of mucking about and insane things, I'm saying it's (at least partially) replacing, because it's like having a set of mates that have already gone through the game and set the bar. It makes people less likely to look for, or do OTHER stuff (because they already have a rulebook for 'the extras').

I never said that they'll play the game any less, only that people are going to be more focused on the "reward" system, than what could potentially be fun/silly/other brag material.

People will stumble upon these things now and then, but without a video/achievement to "prove" it, it's just less of an ego boost, and let's face it: who videos their entire gaming history?

Achievements aren't "bad" in themselves, I'm just grouchy that the system is assumed flawless, and omnipotent in today's gaming.

By the way: for some strange reason, this thread/argument made me go redo mile high club.

PPS: The only achievement I haven't got in the multiplayer is the Invincible one - I always play hardcore.

First run always to have fun, don't care about achievemens, Second playthrough I try to get most of the achievements.

If the game start to get boring I leave it alone ( DMC4, never ever ever gonna even try to get S ranking on DMD difficulty).

But I try to get the most of achievements i find fun. Whatever takes me grinding for hours I won't do.

I generally go for the achievements that take effort but not extreme frustration. I usually get around 700-900 out of each game I buy.

What does 100% matter if I'm perfectly satisfied with my playthrough as is? I mean, my car has four seats, but I don't have all of them occupied when I drive. My voice recorder can store over 200 hours, but I don't work toward filling it up with my every thought and note. I paid for the game, and I'll play it how I want to play it, not how some beta tester with no life wants me to (or whoever else is responsible for setting up the trophies).

I've only ever actively tried for one trophy. It was for doing a barrel roll on a track in WipeoutHD. After a few failed attempts, I realized something important: I wasn't having fun. Playing the game suddenly became work, a mentality I've never understood (which I why I hate MMOs). In short, I play games to get away from people, not compete to meet their expectations. Hearing that little chime when I'm in the middle of something breaks that immersion.

depends on the game. if its very fun, and the achievements give me an extra reason to play it, or make me feel like i did something hard that was unnecessary but appreciated (like deus ex, the arguments, which i only used the phermones sarif and taggart because i botched them and really didnt want to fight taggarts guards), it adds a level of satisfaction.

I just want to play the stupid game, I have no interest in seeing how many enemies I can take out with a single grenade while doing a handstand on a segway or whatever the achievement is
my record is 7 enemies and the segway was on a moving roller coaster.

"Be the Knife" in RE5 is a pretty cool one. It definitely fits that description.

I just don't understand why some people think they are a bad thing. They take nothing away from games and add a little something extra to those who care about it. It's another form of leaderboard to aim for. With the difficulty in games going down it's quite often the only challenge gamers have to aim for.

I relish every challenge a game has to offer, even those that are beyond my abilities.

If I can get something that will say, positively affect my stats, or items, then yes.
If getting it means it has zero effect on gameplay then I couldn't be arsed wasting my time with those so called achievements.
If it's purely cosmetic, like say a beret, or change the color of an item, then no, I fail to see the point.

When I get somewhat bored of a game and what a new challenge I go for it.

Unless it's a game where getting the achievement can make me improve (Rock Band games).

Depends on the achievement really. If its something easy or fun, like parachuting off the Castel Sant'Angelo in ACB, I'm going to try and get it. If its something ridiculous like killing 100,000 enemies in Gears 2 then I won't even consider it.

No.

I have way too many games on my to-play list to spend the time unlocking 100% of the trophies.

Also, some games aren't fun enough to play again once I've seen the entire story.

Depends on the game, games like Oblivion where the achievements are basically given out when you complete different story and side missions I like to get 100% in that because that means I did everything in the game and have enjoyed it to the fullest. Other games I pick and choose achievements on the way and I will try at times to get them but I usually don't try that hard to get them if I can do it after a few tries.

I got every agility orb in both Crackdown games. I think that says something about me.

They amuse me. I get the ones that aren't too much trouble.

Headshot two guys while grinding a single wire in inFamous? Sure! Dodge lightning bolts for forty minutes straight without blinking or missing once to get the little Mog thingie for Lulu in FFX? Nooooooothankyou. (Yes, I know no trophies in FFX, but it is a completionist thing)

The thing I'm a whore about is I'm an obsessive checker of corners and boxes. I want the contents of every chest. Don't care if I'm full health and juggling ten first aid kits, there might be another one in that box way over there and I am going to find out if it takes half an hour to get there.

Only games I've liked enough to get 100% are Burnout: Paradise, Arkham Asylum, and Lego Star Wars 1. I might go back and do it in Dead Space someday.

If the answer for you is no, I want to know why you don't see the point in getting 100% completion out of a game when you've paid for it.
Why on earth would I care about getting 100% completion? I'm not going to grind for 10 hours till i get to the max level for a stupid archievement. I'm not going to collect 1000 whats its that have a 0.01% chance of dropping. I'm not going sit there and spray a ten thousand bullets. I'm not going to finish on every dificulty if i don't want to.

I paid for the game and I'll play the game how I like. You're an idiot if you believe that your not getting the most fun out of a game if you don't get 100% completion.

I did the dodging lighting bolts thing. It was so worth it in the end...

Yes but only on certain games (as in games I enjoy a lot). If I love a game then I will got for 100% completion (which normally means all achievements).

For other games (like your example of COD: MW2 where I think its just a good game, not a great game) I don't really care about achievements (and in an FPS...looking for hidden briefcases is shit). I also despise online achievements and if a game I really like has online achievements it really annoys me (I still don't go for them though).

On the other hand, if its a platformer (e.g. Mario, Banjo Kazooie), action-adventure (e.g. Zelda) or WRPG (KOTOR, Mass Effect 1/2) ...I usually try to get every achievement I can because they are my favourite game genres.

I guess you could say yes but I'm in the between part. I only play games I'm interested in, not just for easy achievements. Though I do try to get every achievement, that is after I beat the game, and for multiplayer I'll never cheat for them UNLESS it is 100% needed to do so. Like the online is dead then that is a needed matter.
