Ok so obviously you can't technically only be one, but the question is if someone asked for your nationality would you say British, or English or whatever? Personally, I would say I'm British, unless I was talking to someone who was Scottish or Welsh or whatever, then I would say I'm English. I guess, I would also say I'm English if I was talking about rugby or something because then the more specific answer is actually important as the individual countries have separate teams. It really doesn't matter to me which term people refer to me as, but I guess it's a bigger deal for more patriotic people. If you aren't from Britain, I guess you can give your opinion as to whether you would refer to us as British or English.

I call myself British because I am half Irish and half English... and British just sounds classier.

I say i'm British, but if i'm talking to someone who also says they are from Britain I will mention i'm from Scotland. I don't mind being called British or Scottish but I don't like being called English, so if I say i'm British to someone foreign then they mention something refering me to being English I will correct them.

I'm English and British.

I see no issue to separate the two. It's like asking "Are you French/Germnan/Spanish/Italian or European?"

You're both.

I'm from Northern Ireland, but I call myself Irish rather than British, due to my families status.

Britain=Scotland, Wales, England.

UK=Britain+Northern Ireland

Ireland=Northern Ireland+Ireland.

So technically, you're not British :p You are a UK Citizen though.

I'm English.

British is what people who've never bothered to learn geography use to refer to people who are Irish, Scottish, Welsh, English and occasionally Australians (I told you they'd never bothered learning georgraphy).

British, says so on my passport.

I'm always slightly amused when people bang on about Britain "just being made up" and then go on to assume that, England or Scotland etc are in fact not social/political constructs just like the UK and are actually some god given category, true now and forever.

Of course, as a guy above pointed out, I am also English, but then again, I'm also called Dave. This doesn't mean an awful lot.

And as to the great feats of our past. Well, I'd take them with a pinch of salt. It wasn't Germany who invented the modern concentration camp.

I'd class myself as British, partly because of me being half Irish, half English (with a bit of Welsh thrown in too), and partly because the whole Britain-or-England/Scotland/etc thing is quite a touchy subject for some...

I see my self as both Scottish and British. You can't really have one without the other and I'm proud of both Britain and Scotland. But, in America people tend to confuse "British" for "English", so I often cut out the middle man and say I'm Scottish while I'm here.

Why are there so many people from the UK on a site based in one of the Carolinas if I remember correctly?

At first I always thought it was just the odd hours I kept... but damn.
